Retrieval of a Lane Plate 82 Years After Implantation: Case Report, Metallurgical Analysis, and Historical Review.

BACKGROUND: The Lane plate was one of the first widely used bone plates, utilized in the first decades of the twentieth century. Here we present the results of a retrieval analysis on a Lane plate, and a review of the history of these plates. Our patient underwent plating of her femur with a Lane plate in 1938. She developed a sciatic nerve palsy, managed surgically later that year by Dr. Arthur Steindler at the University of Iowa. Her femur healed, her nerve recovered, and she did well until 2020, at age 94, when she presented to the University of Iowa with a draining sinus that appeared to c

The prevalence of elongated styloid process in the population of Barcelona: a cross-sectional study & review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Styloid process (SP) is a cylindrical bony projection that originates from the inferior part of the petrous temporal bone just anteriorly to the stylomastoid foramen. Several nerves, muscles, and ligaments are related closely to the (SP). It is considered elongated when the measurement exceeds 30 mm. The overall prevalence of the styloid process is between 3.3% to 84.4%. The elongation of the styloid process (ESP) is associated with the manifestation of Eagle's Syndrome (ES) which is characterized by various types of pain in the head and neck region such as headache, tinnitus, otal

Yersiniomics, a Multi-Omics Interactive Database for Yersinia Species.

The genus Yersinia includes a large variety of nonpathogenic and life-threatening pathogenic bacteria, which cause a broad spectrum of diseases in humans and animals, such as plague, enteritis, Far East scarlet-like fever (FESLF), and enteric redmouth disease. Like most clinically relevant microorganisms, Yersinia spp. are currently subjected to intense multi-omics investigations whose numbers have increased extensively in recent years, generating massive amounts of data useful for diagnostic and therapeutic developments. The lack of a simple and centralized way to exploit these data led us to

Genetic Profiling of Colorectal Carcinomas of Patients with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) run a 10-fold increased risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC) compared to patients with IBD only. The aim of this study was to perform an extensive screen of known carcinogenic genomic alterations in patients with PSC-IBD, and to investigate whether such changes occur already in nondysplastic mucosa. METHODS: Archival cancer tissue and nondysplastic mucosa from resection specimens of 19 patients with PSC-IBD-CRC were characterized, determining DNA copy-number variations, microsatellite ins

Understanding the role of serological and clinical data on assessing the dynamic of malaria transmission: a case study of Bagamoyo district, Tanzania.

INTRODUCTION: naturally acquired blood-stage malaria antibodies and malaria clinical data have been reported to be useful in monitoring malaria change over time and as a marker of malaria exposure. This study assessed the total immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels to Plasmodium falciparum schizont among infants (5-17 months), estimated malaria incidence using routine health facility-based surveillance data and predicted trend relation between anti-schizont antibodies and malaria incidence in Bagamoyo. METHODS: 252 serum samples were used for assessment of total IgG by enzyme-linked immunosorbent ass

Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii Antibodies and Risk Factor Investigation in Portuguese Veterinarians: A Matched Case-Control Study.

(1) Background: Toxoplasma gondii is a widespread zoonotic agent that greatly impacts Public Health, being responsible for one of the most important parasitic zoonosis worldwide. T. gondii has a heteroxenous life cycle, with cats being the definitive hosts and all warm-blooded animals, including humans, being intermediate hosts. Veterinary practitioners (VP) may be at a higher risk than the general population for T. gondii infection, as they have direct and daily contact with many animal species. The aim of the present study was to ascertain if VP were more likely to be anti-T. gondii IgG sero

Haematology laboratory parameters to assess efficacy of CD19-, CD22-, CD33-, and CD123-directed chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy in haematological malignancies.

INTRODUCTION: Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell products are available to treat relapsed/refractory B-lymphoblastic leukaemia/lymphoma (B-ALL), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, mantle-cell lymphoma, and myeloma. CAR products vary by their target epitope and constituent molecules. Hence, there are no common laboratory assays to assess CAR T cell expansion in the clinical setting. We investigated the utility of common haematology laboratory parameters to measure CAR T cell expansion and response. METHODS: Archived CellaVision images, absolute lymphocyte counts, and Sysmex CPD parameters span

A CT-based nomogram for differentiating invasive fungal disease of the lung from bacterial pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: There is an annual increase in the incidence of invasive fungal disease (IFD) of the lung worldwide, but it is always a challenge for physicians to make an early diagnosis of IFD of the lung. Computed tomography (CT) may play a certain role in the diagnosis of IFD of the lung, however, there are no specific imaging signs for differentiating IFD of lung from bacterial pneumonia (BP). METHODS: A total of 214 patients with IFD of the lung or clinically confirmed BP were retrospectively enrolled from two institutions (171 patients from one institution in the training set and 43 patien

Prediction of neoplastic progression in Barrett's esophagus using nanoscale nuclear architecture mapping: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Nanoscale nuclear architecture mapping (nanoNAM), an optical coherence tomography-derived approach, is capable of detecting with nanoscale sensitivity structural alterations in the chromatin of epithelial cell nuclei at risk for malignant transformation. Because these alterations predate the development of dysplasia, we aimed to use nanoNAM to identify patients with Barrett's esophagus (BE) who might progress to high-grade dysplasia (HGD) or esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). METHODS: This is a nested case-control study of 46 BE patients, of which 21 progressed to HGD/EAC o

Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded (FFPE) samples are not a beneficial replacement for frozen tissues in fetal membrane microbiota research.

Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded (FFPE) tissues are routinely collected, archived, and used for clinical diagnosis, including maternal and neonatal health. Applying FFPE samples to microbiota research would be beneficial to reduce preparation, storage and costs associated with limited available frozen samples. This research aims to understand if FFPE fetal membrane samples are comparable to frozen tissues, which are the current gold standard for DNA microbiota analysis. Extracted DNA from nine matched paired patients were sequenced by Illumina sequencing of the V4 16S rRNA gene region. This in

Developmental trajectories of eating disorder symptoms: A longitudinal study from early adolescence to young adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period for the development of eating disorders, but data is lacking on the heterogeneity of their evolution during that time-period. Group-based trajectories can be used to understand how eating disorders emerge and evolve over time. The aim of this study was to identify groups of individuals with distinct levels of eating disorder symptoms between 12 and 20 years and the onset of different types of symptoms. We also studied sex differences in the evolution and course of eating disorder symptoms from early adolescence to adulthood. METHODS: Using archival

Islam and Veterinary Science: Rethinking Animal Suffering Through Islamic Animal Ethics and the Evolving Definition of Halal Slaughter.

In the midst of recent European activism against religious slaughter, the idea that religious slaughter is cruel to animals is often seen as commonsense, and the mandatory pre-slaughter stunning is often portrayed as the moral technology that assures animal welfare. Nevertheless, this portrayal seems to blur the fact that the current notion of animal welfare itself is built upon a changing selection of value assumptions, which are not without problems or academic debates. It also ignores the fact that contemporary veterinary scientists and Muslim scholars have been working together for four de

Genome-wide insights into adaptive hybridisation across the Schistosoma haematobium group in West and Central Africa.

Schistosomiasis remains a public health concern across sub-Saharan Africa; current control programmes rely on accurate mapping and high mass drug administration (MDA) coverage to attempt disease elimination. Inter-species hybridisation can occur between certain species, changing epidemiological dynamics within endemic regions, which has the potential to confound control interventions. The impact of hybridisation on disease dynamics is well illustrated in areas of Cameroon where urogenital schistosomiasis, primarily due to Schistosoma haematobium and hybrid infections, now predominate over inte
