Between March 1990 and August 1993, eleven stenoses were dilated to a diameter of 25 mm by balloon catheter introduced through a coloscope in ten of 25 patients with Crohn's disease that had caused drug-resistant obstructions (five men, five women: mean age 45 [22-61] years). Colonoscopy was performed on 210 asymptomatic average-risk persons, aged 50-75 years, who had negative fecal occult blood test results. Colonoscopy was complete to the cecum in 209 subjects. Fifty-three subjects (25%) had adenomas and two had cancer. All of the adenomas greater than or equal to 1 cm in size and both cancers occurred in subjects aged greater than or equal to 60 years. Previous studies have shown pneumoperitoneum either to be extremely rare or to not occur after inguinal herniorrhaphy, and that its presence signifies a serious intra-abdominal complication. A prospective study has been carried out to consider the incidence and significance of pneumoperitoneum after herniorrhaphy for indirect inguinal hernias. The carcinogenic effect of a single intraperitoneal injection of N-bis(2-hydroxypropyl)nitrosamine (DHPN) was studied in male Wistar rats for 52 weeks. A series of 119 patients undergoing elective resection for diverticular disease has been reviewed. The indications for resection were classified into two major groups--those with severe infections ("complicated" diverticulitis), comprising 58 patients, and those with minimal infections, comprising 61 patients.
