This review assesses the effectiveness of alcohol wiping of anesthetic cartridges prior to their use on surgical trays. Based on the referenced studies of alcohol disinfectants, it is clear that alcohol does not qualify for surgical use. A dedicated method of autoclaving anesthetic cartridges, which are vertically held with their plungers upward, followed by a no-pressure-released cooling-off period, is discussed and recommended. The processed cartridges are dry, sterile, ready for use, and fully functional.

STUDY DESIGN: Breath malodor in 165 patients was measured using an organoleptic test (OLT), sulfide monitoring, and gas chromatography. The management of patients with established bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ) remains unclear. The patient discussed here presented with spontaneous BRONJ of the palate after taking an oral bisphosphonate for osteoporosis. Conservative management resulted in progression of the osteonecrosis. Surgical debridement and immediate reconstruction with free tissue transfer was undertaken and resulted in complete resolution of her condition. The case is presented here.

OBJECTIVES: We tested the hypothesis that patients on bisphosphonates with ONJ might have a poorer dental and periodontal history than non-ONJ patients. Our aim was to retrospectively compare medical and oral history of patients on bisphosphonates with and without ONJ.
STUDY DESIGN: A total of 39 oncologic patients on bisphosphonates were interviewed, examined, and had a panoramic radiograph taken. DMFT values and residual bone levels were calculated and compared for ONJ and non-ONJ patients.
RESULTS: Twenty of 39 patients had ONJ. No statistical differences in caries or residual bone level

We obtained serum bone markers and other relevant endocrine assays on 5 patients with osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). The assays were C-telopeptide, N-telopeptide, bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, intact parathyroid hormone, T3, T4, TSH, and Vitamin D 25 hydroxy.
