Nine-year mean follow-up of one-stage anteroposterior excision of hemivertebrae in the lumbosacral spine.

Six patients with lumbosacral hemivertebrae were treated by one-stage anterior and posterior excision of the hemivertebrae. Long-term follow-up is reported. Overall, correction of the lumbosacral curve was 46%, including one case of pseudarthrosis and subsequent loss of correction. More importantly, truncal imbalance was restored unless other congenital thoracic anomalies were present. New methods of calculating rib cage shift on the pelvis as well as vertebral column displacement from the sagittal plane are presented.

New acrofacial dysostosis syndrome in 3 sibs.

We performed clinical and autopsy studies on 3 sibs with an acrofacial dysostosis (AFD) syndrome. All 3 died neonatally from respiratory complications derived from their severe mandibular hypoplasia. They presented a malformation syndrome characterized by mandibulofacial dysostosis, predominantly preaxial limb deficiencies, rare postaxial limb anomalies, shoulder/pelvis girdle hypoplasia, and cardiac and CNS malformations. This syndromal form of AFD could represent a distinct entity with autosomal-recessive inheritance. Its delineation from other AFD syndromes is discussed.

[Vaginal tumor--an initial manifestation of malignant histiocytosis].

An anaplastic vaginal tumour was diagnosed in a 29-year-old woman. Before the planned operation leukocytosis and thrombocytopenia developed and further diagnostic tests revealed malignant histiocytosis with bone-marrow infiltration, leukaemic wash-out and tumour formation in the lower pelvis. Intensive chemotherapy, as for acute myeloid leukaemia, achieved full remission. The case demonstrates that, although rare, tumorous organ infiltration may be the initial manifestation of malignant histiocytosis. Its early diagnosis and treatment decisively affects the prognosis.

Serum induced lymphoid cell mediated cytotoxicity to human transitional cell carcinomas of the genitourinary tract.

In some serums of patients with transitional cell carcinoma (TCC), a factor is present which induces lymphocytes from most donors with or without TCC to become cytotoxic against TCC-derived target cells. The induced cytotoxicity was directed against target cells derived from TCC's of the renal pelvis, ureter, and urinary bladder, but not against cells derived from normal kidney, bladder, testis, or skin or from renal cell carcinoma. Cytotoxicity occurred without complement but did not occur without effector cells.

Rare Case of Multifocal Intraosseous Cavernous Hemangioma Posing as Malignancy.

Intraosseous cavernous hemangiomas (OCHs) are benign vascular tumors most frequently located in the axial skeleton, including the skull, vertebrae, and pelvis. However, when they occur in the long bones, their clinical presentation may resemble malignancy, posing a diagnostic challenge. This case highlights a female patient with multiple OCHs in the femur, sternum, and humerus, mimicking malignant bone lesions. The report discusses the clinical features, radiological and pathological findings, the role of positron emission tomography-computed tomography in diagnosis, and management.

Successful Retrograde Management of Encrusted Double J Stent in Kidney Transplantation Patient.

Managing ureteral and renal pelvis pathology through retrograde endoscopy is not a straightforward task in kidney transplant patients. We present a case involving an encrusted double J stent in a kidney transplant patient. Using a holmium LASER through a retrograde ureteroscopy, we disintegrated the encrustation on both the upper and lower coils and successfully removed the DJ stent. This effectively demonstrates that retrograde management of encrusted DJ in transplant patients is feasible and safe, provided it is undertaken in the appropriate circumstances and with advanced endourological too…

Endometriosis and In Vitro Fertilization.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an established option for the management of infertility in patients with endometriosis, though there remains ongoing debate around the extent to which endometriosis may compromise IVF treatment success, in which fertilization and preimplantation embryo development occur outside the pelvis. Whether endometriosis impacts oocyte and embryo quality and/or endometrial receptivity remains central to this debate. Here, we review the current literature relating to the impact of endometriosis on IVF outcomes and management strategies to consider when performing IVF treat…

Bilateral Sacroiliac Joint Dislocation, Discussion and Surgical Strategies: A Case Report.

CASE: A 16-year-old male patient presented with isolated bilateral sacroiliac (SI) joint dislocation. In this report, we discuss the presentation and focus on strategies for operative reduction and fixation for this rare injury. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, we present a case of a bilateral ligamentous SI joint dislocation in an adolescent. The patient was reduced in the supine position with a sacral bump and bilateral traction with direct and indirect reduction aids inserted through a lateral window. Bilateral SI screws stabilized the pelvis, facilitating uncomplicated healing.

Successful retrograde embolization through the arch of cavernous arteries of a bilateral post-traumatic arterio-cavernous fistula: case report.

Penile trauma is uncommon, with an incidence of 1/175,000 cases in emergency departments worldwide. Less frequent, there may be cases of penile fracture with the penis in a flaccid state and also develop vascular lesions such as rupture of the cavernous artery, pseudoaneurysms, and arterio-cavernous fistulas. We present a case of a 32-year-old male patient with the perineum and pelvis blunt trauma after a motorbike accident with a secondary bilateral arterio-cavernous fistula treated with retrograde embolization through the arch of cavernous arteries.

Detection of Malpositioned VP Shunt Catheter by Radionuclide CSF Cisternography.

A 37-year-old man presented with a 2-week history of abdominal pain, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and leukocytosis. Medical history includes congenital hydrocephalus, with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt placed several years ago. Radionuclide cerebrospinal fluid cisternography shows curvilinear activity in the abdomen, in the pattern of small and large bowel loops, suggesting that the tip of the catheter is inside a small bowel loop. No activity is seen in the intraperitoneal compartment. CT of the abdomen and pelvis followed by laparoscopic surgery confirmed the findings.

[Etymology of russian terms in the anatomy of the urinary system].

This paper analyzes the etymology of the Russian names of the organs of the urinary system (kidney, ureter, urinary bladder, urethra) and their separate parts (renal pelvis). It is shown that Russian anatomical terms originate from the root morphemes of the Indo-European language group, which convey morphological, physiological or anatomical features of this or that organ. At the moment Russian terminology is widely used in the study of anatomy and other fundamental and medical sciences in universities and clinical practice along with common Latin names and eponyms of names of these or other s…

[Avenues of reflection for endometriosis research in France].

Endometriosis is a chronic disease in which lesions resembling endometrial tissue are found outside the uterus, mainly in the pelvis or abdomen. It may affect 10% of women of childbearing age. It is the cause of a significant alteration in quality of life and a major cost to the health system. Few research teams are working on this subject, and its pathophysiology is still poorly understood. This article proposes avenues of reflection for research on endometriosis in France, notably based on the mobilization of related scientific communities (involved in cancer, development, epigenetics, and n…

FDG PET/CT in a Case With Cellular Schwannoma of the Kidney.

Schwannoma of the kidney is exceedingly rare. We describe contrast-enhanced CT and FDG PET/CT findings in a case with renal cellular schwannoma. Contrast-enhanced CT showed the enhancing tumor was located in the anterior middle portion of the left kidney, encasing the renal vessels and compressing the renal pelvis. The tumor showed inhomogeneous FDG uptake with SUV max of 8.6 mimicking renal cell carcinoma. This case indicates renal schwannoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of FDG-avid renal lesions.

Pulmonary lymphangitis sarcomatosis: a rare cause of severe progressive dyspnoea.

Pulmonary lymphangitis carcinomatosis is a complication of malignancy with a poor prognosis. We describe an unusual case in which it caused ventilatory failure and unfortunately death in a previously well male in his 70s. Abnormal chest imaging led to a wide differential diagnosis with Bronchoscopy confirming malignant cells. MRI of his pelvis and biopsy was done diagnosis of metastatic leiomyosarcoma, a particularly aggressive malignancy. Sarcoma-related lymphangitis carcinomatosis is rarely described in the literature and this is the first case to our knowledge of its association with leiomy…

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma mimicking chronic osteomyelitis of the ankle joint: A case report.

Lymphoma is the seventh most common type of malignancy in both males and females. It may develop in any location where lymphomatous tissue exists. Although extranodal presentation in the lower limb and pelvis are uncommon, it could present with diverse manifestations. We report an unusual case of primary extranodal large B-cell lymphoma of the ankle joint initially presumed to be a chronic osteomyelitis. This case report discusses the impact of imaging studies on decision-making and highlights the need to consider malignancy in chronic infections.

An asymptomatic anterior vaginal wall endometrioma, a rare manifestation of endometriosis: A case report.

A 23-year-old patient with an asymptomatic anterior vaginal wall cyst was referred to gynecology for evaluation and treatment. Preoperative assessment with physical examination and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the pelvis was most consistent with Gartner's cyst. Following resection of the cyst wall, histologic evaluation demonstrated endometrial glands, hemosiderin-laden macrophages and inflammation, consistent with vaginal wall endometrioma. This case highlights challenges in the diagnosis of endometriosis in the vagina and in other rare locations, possible mechanisms of development, and…

Postoperative Paralumbar Pseudoaneurysm: A Case Report.

Lumbar artery pseudoaneurysm is a rare adverse event that is presented in reports. It is associated with serious injuries such as in the retroperitoneal cavity and pelvis. Furthermore, infection and iatrogenic etiology were documented as well. This case report presents a patient with a chest stab wound and a fall from a 2-m height, which resulted in multiple spinal fractures that were treated surgically. However, he presented back with lumbar artery pseudoaneurysm 2 weeks postoperatively, which was treated successfully by endovascular embolization.

Rare presentation of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in the kidney.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare pathologic entity that has been mostly described in the lung. It has been reported in nearly every organ, with occurrence in the kidney being extremely rare. IMT has nonspecific clinical and radiological findings and often mimics a malignant process. This is a case discussing the radiologic and pathologic findings of a renal IMT in a 35-year-old female who underwent radical nephrectomy for a right renal pelvis mass that was mistaken for transitional cell carcinoma.

Mediastinal Pseudocyst: Varied Presentations and Management-Experience from a Tertiary Referral Care Centre in India.

Pseudocysts are a recognised complication following acute or chronic pancreatitis. Usually located in peripancreatic areas, they have also been reported to occur in atypical regions like liver, pelvis, spleen, and mediastinum. Mediastinal pseudocysts are a rare entity and present with myriad of symptoms due to their unique location. They are a clinical challenge to diagnose and manage. In this paper, we describe the clinical and radiological characteristics of mediastinal pseudocysts in 7 of our patients, as well as our experience in managing these patients along with their clinical outcome.

[PRIMARY AND SECONDARY HYPERPARATHYROIDISM PRESENTING AS BROWN TUMOR].

Hyperparathyroidism (HPT) may lead to the formation of osteolytic lesions with giant granulomas. Giant cell lesions associated with HPT are known as brown tumor and represent an end stage complication of HPT. Brown tumors affect the mandible, clavicles, ribs and pelvis. Maxillary involvement is rare. We present two cases of brown tumor: the first is a case of primary HPT involving the maxilla and the second case is secondary HPT involving the mandible. Differential diagnosis, work up and methods of management of the jaw lesions are discussed.
