Conventional virologic and in situ nucleic acid hybridization methods were used to study immunocompetent and immunosuppressed 3-week old BALB/c mice inoculated intravitreally with 10(4) plaque-forming units (pfu) of murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV). Immunocompetent mice experienced a self-limited ocular infection with peak virus titers of 10(3.5) pfu/ml in the retina-choroid fraction on day 4 of infection. Using biotinylated MCMV DNA probes, MCMV DNA was detected in cells of the iris, ciliary body, and rarely, the retina or choroid on days 4 and 7 of infection. With few exceptions, retinal archit

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a vision-threatening retinal disease found in premature babies, where early diagnosis is very important to prevent irreversible vision loss. In recent years, several studies have been conducted on the development of reliable AI-based screening systems. However, due to the lack of well-annotated public datasets most of them have been limited to experimental research, using single-central datasets. In this study, we introduce Macretina, a comprehensive and expert-annotated dataset curated from 1432 retinal fundus images of 112 premature babies collected at Mac

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Alport syndrome (AS) is a rare hereditary systemic disease that results in alterations of the kidneys, inner ear, and various structures of the eye. It is caused by mutations in one of the genes encoding collagen type IV. In recent years, new and innovative imaging techniques have added characteristics of ocular alterations in AS and provided new insights, including into the pathogenesis of the disease. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the current knowledge of ocular changes in AS, as well as to present the Alport ocular pass.

BACKGROUND: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of rare inherited retinal disorders characterized by diffuse progressive degeneration of the retina that typically presents bilaterally. Unilateral RP has not often been reported in children. We present a series of cases that illustrate discrimination between unilateral and asymmetric disease and between dystrophy and acquired degeneration.
METHODS: Four patients (9-15 years of age; 3 females) were referred to our institution for possible unilateral RP based on fundus appearance and unilateral symptoms. All underwent full-field electroretinogra

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is the second most common retinal vein disease and an important cause of blindness and visual morbidity. Systemic risk factors are commonly associated with RVO, while unclear it is the role of the thrombophilic and coagulation disorders. To evaluate "classic" and "emerging" risk factors, and to establish a good treatment for RVO. Fifty patients, 31 males and 19 females, with RVO were selected for our study. RVO patients were divided into two groups: those with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and those with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). All patients we

Results of pars plana vitrectomy for complications of proliferative diabetic retinopathy were analysed in 32 consecutive patients with a blind fellow eye due to diabetic eye disease. The mean follow-up period was 22.3 months. Only 16% of all eyes examined had received full scatter photocoagulation prior to referral for vitrectomy. Out of 9 eyes with vitreous haemorrhage, 8 improved to a visual acuity of > or = 0.2 postoperatively. Amid 23 eyes which were vitrectomized for advanced traction retinal detachment, only 4 eyes improved to a postoperative visual acuity of > or = 0.02. In this group 1

Proximal constriction (retinal arteries narrower near the disk than further down the stream in the retina) was present in 96 of 226 eyes (42%) with classic glaucoma or normal-tension glaucoma, but it was present in only 11 of 206 eyes (5%) that were normal, had ocular hypertension, or had retinal disease not affecting the optic nerve. In cases of glaucoma with proximal constriction over only part of the disk circumference, its location corresponded to the sector with the greatest cupping in 60 of 66 cases (91%) and likewise corresponded to the sector in which the peripapillary zone of absent r

Experimental work shows that subretinal fluid is removed both by active transport across the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and by passive hydrostatic and oncotic forces that work most effectively when the RPE barrier has been damaged. The retina will stay attached whether or not the RPE is intact--but retinal function requires the RPE barrier and thus active transport is the primary mechanism of subretinal fluid control. RPE fluid transport is normally limited by the retina (which resists water flow from the vitreous) but can be quite powerful when a reservoir of subretinal fluid is present

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major ocular microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus and one of the leading causes of vision loss among working-age populations worldwide. Hyperglycemia-induced metabolic dysregulation has been regarded as a central mechanism underlying DR; accumulating evidence indicates that biomechanical remodeling of the retinal microenvironment also plays an important role in disease progression. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) serve as key mediators linking metabolic stress to alterations in mechanical signaling. Through non-enzymatic glycation and covalent c

pediatric inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) are a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by progressive visual function impairment, often manifesting from early childhood. These conditions arise from dysfunction in retinal morphogenesis, phototransduction, and cellular maintenance pathways, involving photoreceptors, the retinal pigment epithelium, and glial systems. This review provides an integrated analysis of the molecular underpinnings, phenotypic variability, diagnostic advancements, and emerging therapeutic avenues for pediatric IRDs. By systematical

Since coronavirus disease infection-19 (COVID-19) entry to the cells is angiotensin enzyme receptor (ACEII) dependent, extrapulmonary manifestations have been suspected. Ocular manifestations reported in several studies to involve the anterior as well as posterior eye segments. However, the predominance of the anterior eye segment reduced the attention of the scientific community on the posterior eye segment. Our results showed that the incidence of changes in the posterior eye segment is 1/5 of the anterior eye segment. Posterior eye segment manifestations include acute macular neuroretinopat

Increased oxidative stress in the retina and retinal pigment epithelium is implicated in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Antioxidant cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2NPs) have been used to treat degenerative retinal pathologies in animal models, although their delivery route is not ideal for chronic patient treatment. In this work, we prepared a formulation for ocular topical delivery that contains small (3 nm), nonaggregated biocompatible CeO2NPs. In vitro results indicate the biocompatible and protective character of the CeO2NPs, reducing oxidative stress in ARPE19 cells and inhibitin

The only approved retinal gene therapy is for biallelic RPE65 mutations which cause a recessive retinopathy with a primary molecular defect located at the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). For a distinct recessive RPE disease caused by biallelic BEST1 mutations, a pre-clinical proof-of-concept for gene therapy has been demonstrated in canine eyes. The current study was undertaken to consider potential outcome measures for a BEST1 clinical trial in patients demonstrating a classic autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy (ARB) phenotype. Spatial distribution of retinal structure showed a wide expan

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a degenerative retinal disease and one of major causes of irreversible vision loss. AMD has been linked to several pathological factors, such as oxidative stress and inflammation. Moreover, Aβ (1-42) oligomers have been found in drusen, the extracellular deposits that accumulate beneath the retinal pigmented epithelium in AMD patients. Hereby, we investigated the hypothesis that treatment with 1,25(OH) 2D3 (vitamin D3) and meso-zeaxathin, physiologically present in the eye, would counteract the toxic effects of three different insults on immortalized h
