Impact of Blood Pressure, Lesion Level, and Physical Activity on Aortic Augmentation Index in Persons with Spinal Cord Injury.

Individuals with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) are at a heightened risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) resulting from autonomic nervous system dysfunction, physical inactivity, and increased inflammatory processes. Arterial stiffness (AS) is recognized as an independent risk factor for CVD and, specifically, pulse wave analysis (PWA) has proven to be a useful tool to predict and track structural arterial changes that reflect arteriosclerosis. The augmentation index (AI) can be used to estimate AS and is derived from the amplitude and timing of the blood pressure (BP) wave reflection in a p

Strategies to augment volitional and reflex function may improve locomotor capacity following incomplete spinal cord injury.

Many studies highlight the remarkable plasticity demonstrated by spinal circuits following an incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). Such plasticity can contribute to improvements in volitional motor recovery, such as walking function, although similar mechanisms underlying this recovery may also contribute to the manifestation of exaggerated responses to afferent input, or spastic behaviors. Rehabilitation interventions directed toward augmenting spinal excitability have shown some initial success in improving locomotor function. However, the potential effects of these strategies on involuntary

Traumatic subaxial cervical facet subluxation and dislocation: epidemiology, radiographic analyses, and risk factors for spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Distractive flexion injuries (DFIs) of the subaxial cervical spine are major contributors to spinal cord injury (SCI). Prompt assessment and early intervention of DFIs associated with SCI are crucial to optimize patient outcome; however, neurologic examination of patients with subaxial cervical injury is often difficult, as patients commonly present with reduced levels of consciousness. Therefore, it is important to establish potential associations between injury epidemiology and radiographic features, and neurologic involvement. PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to des

Sevoflurane preconditioning ameliorates traumatic spinal cord injury through caveolin-3-dependent cyclooxygenase-2 inhibition.

Constipation is a common problem in elderly persons, with prevalence ranging from 15% to 20% in the community-dwelling elderly population and up to 50% in some studies of nursing home residents. In these patients, constipation results from a combination of risk factors, such as reduced fibre and fluid intake, decreased physical activity resulting from chronic diseases and multiple medications. Despite the high prevalence of constipation, there is surprisingly little evidence available on which to base management decisions of this common condition. Increased fluid intake, regular physical activ

Strategies for Rapid Muscle Fatigue Reduction during FES Exercise in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Rapid muscle fatigue during functional electrical stimulation (FES)-evoked muscle contractions in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) is a significant limitation to attaining health benefits of FES-exercise. Delaying the onset of muscle fatigue is often cited as an important goal linked to FES clinical efficacy. Although the basic concept of fatigue-resistance has a long history, recent advances in biomedical engineering, physiotherapy and clinical exercise science have achieved improved clinical benefits, especially for reducing muscle fatigue during FES-exercise. Multi-Day Recordings of Wearable Sensors Are Valid and Sensitive Measures of Function and Independence in Human Spinal Cord Injury.

Wearable sensor assessment tools have proven to be reliable in measuring function in normal and impaired movement disorders during well-defined assessment protocols. While such assessments can provide valid and sensitive measures of upper limb activity in spinal cord injury (SCI), no assessment tool has yet been introduced into unsupervised daily recordings to complement clinical assessments during rehabilitation. The objective of this study was to measure the overall amount of upper-limb activity in subjects with acute SCI using wearable sensors and relate this to lesion characteristics, inde

Changes in VGLUT1 and VGLUT2 expression in rat dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord following spared nerve injury.

Disturbance of glutamate homeostasis is a well-characterized mechanism of neuropathic pain. Vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUTs) determine glutamate accumulation in synaptic vesicles and their roles in neuropathic pain have been suggested by gene-knockout studies. Here, we investigated the spatio-temporal changes in VGLUT expression during the development of neuropathic pain in wild-type rats. Spared nerve injury (SNI) induced mechanical allodynia from postoperative day 1 to at least day 14. Expression of VGLUT1 and VGLUT2 in dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord was examined by western blo
