Eustachian tube dysfunction can cause fluid to collect within the middle ear cavity and form a middle ear effusion (MEE). MEEs can persist for weeks or months and cause hearing loss as well as speech and learning delays in young children. The ability of a physician to accurately identify and characterize the middle ear for signs of fluid and/or infection is crucial to provide the most appropriate treatment for the patient. Currently, middle ear infections are assessed with otoscopy, which provides limited and only qualitative diagnostic information. In this study, we propose a method utilizing

A child referred for management of retinoblastoma who alternatively had a calcified scleral choristoma as part of previously undiagnosed organoid nevus syndrome is described. A 31-month-old male infant with scalp alopecia was referred for retinoblastoma management after a calcified mass in his left eye was found. Ophthalmic examination revealed the mass was of choroidal or scleral origin, underlying the retina. The amelanotic circumpapillary mass extended superonasally in a geographic configuration and measured 14×12 mm. There was no subretinal fluid, hemorrhage, feeder vessels, or tumor seedi

BACKGROUND: Extramacular branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) occasionally causes serous macular detachment. We studied the movement of extravasated fluid from BRVO lesions to the submacular space.
METHODS: We examined nine eyes from nine patients with serous retinal detachment caused by extramacular BRVO. In addition to a comprehensive ophthalmic examination, optical coherence tomography was performed in all nine eyes. Six of the patients also underwent fluorescein angiography.
RESULTS: Visual acuity ranged from 0.03 to 0.9 (median 0.5). All nine eyes showed localized macular detachment and

We report two cases of macular edema treated with the oral administration of furosemide. The first case presented here was a 78-year-old male patient with visual disturbance of the left eye. He had been taking an oral agent for diabetes and had chronic renal failure for 7 years. From 10 days prior to the visit, he had visual disturbance of the left eye accompanied by systemic edema. There were no specific findings in the anterior segment, but sub-retinal fluid was observed in the left fundus. Macular edema was observed on fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography; therefore, the

PURPOSE: To quantify the retinal thickness and the refractive error of the healthy human eye during hyperglycemia by means of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and Hartmann-Shack aberrometry.
METHODS: Hyperglycemia was induced in five healthy subjects who were given a standard oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) after a subcutaneous injection of somatostatin. Main outcome parameters were the central, pericentral and peripheral thickness of the fovea, measured by means of optical coherence tomography (OCT3). Ocular refractive error was determined with Hartmann-Shack aberrometry. Measurements a

AIM: To compare 6 months of treatment with bimatoprost and timolol in terms of their hypotensive efficacy and secondary effects, including changes in macular thickness and the inflammatory reaction induced in the anterior chamber.
METHODS: A prospective, randomized, parallel-group trial performed on 30 eyes of 30 patients per group. The main outcome measure was the difference between the IOP value taken between the baseline visit and the 6-month-visit. Macular thickness determined through optical coherence tomography and anterior chamber inflammation estimated using the laser flare meter was

Despite the protective blood-ocular barrier, various drugs can induce retinal damage, manifesting as retinal pigment epithelium dysfunction, photoreceptor degeneration, vascular abnormalities, ganglion cell damage, optic nerve impairment, or uveitis. These toxic effects are often linked to mechanisms such as oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cytoskeletal disruption. Early detection through advanced imaging techniques like optical coherence tomography (OCT) and multifocal electroretinography (mfERG), combined with timely intervention, is critical to preventing irreversible vision

UNLABELLED: Clinicians should be aware that internal limiting membrane (ILM) defects may occur concurrently with epiretinal membrane, and starting ILM peeling at the ILM defect margin may be useful in such cases.
ABSTRACT: We describe a useful surgical technique for the treatment of idiopathic epiretinal membrane with concurrent internal limiting membrane (ILM) defect, in which ILM peeling was started from the ILM defect margin. A dissociated optic nerve fiber layer-like appearance on fundus examination and optical coherence tomography may suggest an ILM defect.

We report a 17-year-old boy who presented with a chronic left unilateral optic neuropathy. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated compression of the left optic nerve due to skull hyperostosis. He was found to be profoundly vitamin A deficient secondary to an unusual diet consisting predominantly of potato chips and crisps. Skull hyperostosis with cranial neuropathies and other neurological abnormalities has been described in growing animals fed vitamin A deficient diets but has not been previously reported in humans.

The prevalence of high myopia and primary open-angle glaucoma is rapidly increasing, complicating differential diagnosis because of overlapping morphological changes in the optic nerve head and lamina cribrosa. Both pathologies are accompanied by changes in the optic nerve head and lamina cribrosa, which makes interpretation of optical coherence tomography findings challenging. Analysis of literature sources shows that the most significant criteria include lamina cribrosa parameters (thickness, curvature, deformation index), features of peripapillary atrophy, the pattern of retinal nerve fiber

We report the case of an early adolescent male on lamotrigine and levetiracetam therapy with a 1-month history of progressive, bilateral, painless visual loss which resolved on cessation of lamotrigine. To our knowledge, we present the first case of lamotrigine and levetiracetam dual therapy associated with toxic optic neuropathy, supported by electrophysiology and optical coherence tomography (OCT) changes. Electrophysiology findings were consistent with retinal ganglion cell dysfunction, with bilateral optic nerve involvement. Macula OCT showed mild retinal ganglion cell loss in all inner qu

The visual pathway extends from the globes anteriorly to the occipital cortex posteriorly. A wide variety of disease processes may produce visual dysfunction. Because the optic nerve is a fiber tract of the brain covered by meninges, it can be affected by many of the same pathologic processes that occur in the brain and meninges. Physical examination and diagnostic tests of visual function performed by the clinician can frequently identify the anatomic location of the causative lesion in the patient with vision loss. This enables the radiologist to optimize the imaging evaluation of the patien

A case of a 14-year-old boy with optic hypoplasia and pituitary dwarfism was presented. Eye Examination showed typical hypoplasia of the left optic nerve and mild hypoplasia of the right optic nerve. Except for dwarfism and nystagmus, the appearance of the patient was not unusual. Computed tomography revealed an enlargement of the suprachiasmatic cistern, and the presence of the septum pellucidum. The pituitary function tests revealed complete deficiency in GH, and poor or intermediate secretion in ACTH, TSH, PRL, LH and FSH. Urine volume and specific gravity were normal. Therapy with human gr
