Chromatographic retention data for a group of barbiturates have been measured on seven chromatographic systems (two gas--liquid chromatographic (GLC), three high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) and two thin-layer chromatographic systems) and the value of these for barbiturate identification has been discussed. The overall correlations observed between pairs of systems are generally low; however, specific groups of barbiturates show very high correlations and this determines the approach to the selection of two or more systems to increase chromatographic discrimination of the barbitur

A cholesterol-decomposing fungus, Fusarium solani (Mart.) SACC. strain PP 96, was found to produce several different naphthaquinone pigments in a glycerol-mineral salts medium. Three novel compounds structurally related to fusarubin were isolated by chloroform extration followed by silicic acid column chromatography and preparative thin-layer chromatography. The purified compounds were found to have relatively low activity against bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi.

METHODS: Paracin 1.7 was purified by chromatography and its molecular weight was measured by using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Antibacterial activity was measured by using the agar-well diffusion method.

A species of epiphytic Prorocentrum (Dinophyta, Prorocentrales, collected from the macroalga Dictyota dichotoma, was brought into culture. Based on morphological characteristics, this isolate was identified as Prorocentrum belizeanum. Analysis of the culture extract using high-performance liquid chromatography and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry indicated the production of okadaic acid, a toxic polyether linked with the human diseases, diarrhetic shellfish poisoning and ciguatera fish poisoning.

A simple air-monitoring method was developed and validated for vesicant sulfur mustard (HD) in the work place at time weighted average levels. XAD-2 adsorbent was used for the collection of HD vapours for 8 h followed by liquid desorption with carbon tetrachloride. The trace level analysis was carried out by gas chromatography-photoionization detection and was confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometric detection in the selected ion mode.

Quantitative results are reported for gas-liquid chromatography of mixtures of free tetra-, hexa-, and octadecanals and cis-9-octadecenal on polar and nonpolar liquid phases. Stability of the fatty aldehydes during chromatographic analysis and up to 1 year of storage appears to be related to the solvent (carbon disulfide) used. Analysis of the free aldehydes by gas-liquid chromatography eliminates the disadvantages associated with the preparation and analysis of derivatives for this lipid class.
