A cross-sectional study was carried out from May to September 2011 on 35 smallholder dairy farms in Chiang Mai, Thailand, to identify the quarter, cow, and farm factors that relate to intramammary infections (IMI) from major specified pathogens, compared to infections from minor pathogens. Lactation studies are necessary evaluations of medications for reproductive-age women. We evaluated pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamics, safety, and adherence profiles associated with 7 days of 1% tenofovir (TFV) vaginal gel use during lactation. Tenofovir levels (maternal/infant serum, milk) and anti-HIV activity (milk), adverse events (AEs), and adherence were measured for 17 HIV-1-seronegative breast-feeding mother-infant pairs. Tenofovir use was well-tolerated and detected at low levels in maternal serum, milk, and infant serum but demonstrated no anti-HIV activity in milk.

Breath test was performed in 664 school-aged children in order to measure lactose malabsorption. The first screening showed that 23.4% of the children evidenced malabsorption of milk sugar. In these children further stool examination for Giardia lamblia infection, and saccharose breath test was performed to identify more complex absorption problems. Zinc deficiency was diagnosed in a breast-fed mature infant and her sister. In both infants the characteristic dermatitis appeared on the face and buttocks around 10 weeks of age. It responded rapidly to zinc supplements. Their mother's serum zinc level was slightly low but her milk was found to be remarkably low in zinc. The bioavailability of oxytetracycline (OTC) and chlortetracycline (CTC) was studied in non-fasting calves. The availability of OTC was found to be 5% and of CTC 37% after oral administration of 10 mg/kg. The availability was reduced when the drugs were given in a milk replacer or in cow's milk. Flecainide toxicity occurred in an infant being treated for refractory atrioventricular re-entry tachycardia. Ventricular tachycardia developed when dextrose was substituted for milk feeds. We believe that milk was interfering with the absorption of flecainide, and so a high serum concentration developed when milk feeds were stopped.

Four children experienced kwashiorkor six weeks to six months following the introduction of a low-protein, high-fat, nondairy creamer into their diets.
