PURPOSE: To assess the feasibility and acute/delayed toxicity of pulsed-dose-rate brachytherapy (PDR BT) in head-and-neck tumors.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 45 head and neck cancer patients underwent interstitial or contact PDR BT at a dose of 10.2-70 Gy (median, 70 Gy) and 0.6 or 1.0 Gy/pulse/h. 42 patients were administered BT as part of their curative treatment; 32 of them had sole BT. Three reirradiated patients with recurrent tumor had palliative BT.

BACKGROUND: The study was designed to determine the efficacy of OraDisc (active component 2 mg amlexanox) on the prevention of aphthous ulcers treated at the prodromal stage.
METHODS: Thermographic imaging was used to confirm the presence of a prodromal ulcer. Fifty-two patients were randomized to receive OraDisc (N = 26) or vehicle patches (N = 26). Patches were applied four times a day for 72 h over the prodromal area. The percentage of subjects who developed an ulcer at 72 h was compared between groups using the Fisher's exact test.

Viral infections and antiviral responses have been linked to several metabolic diseases, including Reye's syndrome, which is aspirin-induced hepatotoxicity in the context of a viral infection. We identify an interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3)-dependent but type I interferon-independent pathway that strongly inhibits the expression of retinoid X receptor alpha (RXRalpha) and suppresses the induction of its downstream target genes, including those involved in hepatic detoxification. A maxillary alveolar mucosal inflammation, demonstrated by local tenderness and increased temperature, is present in migraine, tension-type headache and facial pain patients even when the patient is asymptomatic. Research is presented showing effective treatment of these conditions with fewer side effects than with standard medication by local anti-inflammatory methods. These alternative methods include: chilling, application of anti-inflammatory gel and low-level (non-cutting) laser. Local treatment also mediates cervical muscle spasm, adding to its overall effectiveness.

Na sucrose octasulfate (Na SOS) was tested for ability to relieve radiation-induced acute skin and mucosal reactions in patients with head and neck cancer. Sixty patients were included in this prospective, double-blind, randomized study. Skin and mucosal reactions were scored using several variables. We report 162 cases of Behçet's disease, seen at the Internal Medicine Unit of Ibn Sina Hospital at Rabat, between January 1983 and June 1996. The present investigation has examined the clinical benefits of tobramycin, polymyxin E and amphotericin therapy in the management of oral mucositis in children undergoing chemotherapy prior to bone marrow transplantation. Tobramycin, polymyxin E, and amphotericin reduced the degree of oral mucositis more than conventional therapy of diphenhydramine, Maalox, and local analgesic. While there was a statistically significant fall in the severity of the mucositis with tobramycin, polymyxin E and amphotericin, this was unlikely to be of practical benefit.

The HLA-B5 phenotype was investigated in 235 patients with Behçet's disease and in 100 healthy persons. HLA-B5 was more frequent in the patients (77 vs. 30% p < 0.001, relative risk = 7.8). The frequency of HLA-B5 was higher in patients with genital ulceration than without (82.3 vs. 63%, p < 0.01). Patients with thrombophlebitis showed a less frequent positivity of HLA-B5 antigen than the patients without thrombophlebitis (50 vs. 79.2%, p < 0.02).
