Cryotherapy-Induced Full-Thickness Digital Frostbite Injury Reconstructed With Reverse Cross-Finger Flap.

We present a rare case of full-thickness frostbite injury following cryotherapeutic treatment for a viral digital wart. Treatment of abnormal skin growths secondary to cutaneous infection by human papillomavirus (ie, warts) often is sought because of their unsightly appearance. Numerous treatment modalities exist, including topical, systemic, surgical, and cryotherapeutic options. Cryotherapy (eg, liquid nitrogen) represents a common treatment option for cutaneous warts. Complications secondary to cryotherapy are infrequent and generally minor (eg, skin dyspigmentation or transient dysesthesia

Medical device-related pressure injury from compression therapy.

The use of compression therapy is known to be effective in the management of patients with venous leg ulceration and is commonly recommended as a first-line treatment. A rare but known complication of compression therapy is pressure damage to the limb, also referred to as bandage damage, which should be categorised as a medical device-related pressure injury. Patients should receive a comprehensive, holistic assessment before any compression therapy is applied. Risk factors for compression therapy injury include peripheral arterial disease, older age, fragile skin, pronounced bony prominences

Open hand fractures: an analysis of the recovery of active motion and of complications.

Seventy-five of 104 patients who underwent operative fixation of open hand fractures were reviewed between 6 months and 7 years after injury (average, 17 months). There were 140 fractures involving 125 fingers. Results, evaluated on the basis of total active range of digital motion achieved at final follow-up, correlated highly with severity of soft tissue injury. When open fractures of comparable severity were contrasted between groups that did and did not require additional extension by incision to achieve acceptable reduction and stabilization, there was some additional loss of active range

Editorial Commentary: From Tendon Wars to Mars: Why the Quadriceps Might Be the Last Autograft Standing.

In 2026, we are sending probes to Mars, mining metals from asteroids, and debating whether artificial intelligence should write our operative notes, yet we are still arguing about which tendon to use for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Amid the noise, the quadriceps tendon has quietly re-emerged as the pragmatic choice in a field long dominated by graft dogma. With its broad cross-sectional area, favorable collagen alignment, and lower donor-site morbidity, it offers an appealing balance between biomechanics and biology. Recent evidence shows comparable stability and superior patien

Arthroscopic Management of Massive Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tears: Whole Rotator Cable Reconstruction Using Proximal Biceps Tendon Autograft.

Massive irreparable rotator cuff tears (MIRCTs) are not uncommon in clinical practice, significantly impacting shoulder function and daily activities. Extensive tear size, tendon contracture, and fat infiltration within the rotator cuff pose significant challenges for both patients and clinicians. This type of tear is a key area of interest and a challenge in research and treatments. Current treatment options include conservative management, debridement, partial repair, superior capsule reconstruction (SCR), tendon transfers, and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA). However, clinical ou

Comparison of Clinical Efficacy between Arthroscopic and Open Surgery for Ogden Type 1-2 Peroneal Tendon Dislocation.

OBJECTIVE: While the incidence of peroneal tendon dislocation (PTD) is relatively low, it is frequently underdiagnosed in clinical practice, and the misdiagnosis or improper treatment of this condition may lead to a decline in patients' quality of life. Currently, the surgical treatment options for PTD mainly include open and arthroscopic surgery. However, in order to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of these two surgical approaches, further comparative research is needed. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the early clinical outcomes of arthroscopic and open surgery i

Ultrasound is more reliable than clinical tests to both confirm and rule out pathologies of the long head of the biceps: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: To synthesize the literature and critically appraise current evidence to determine the most accurate physical examination (clinical test or ultrasound) to detect pathologies of the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT). METHODS: A search was performed on PubMed, Embase®, and Cochrane. Studies that compared the diagnostic accuracy of clinical tests or ultrasound versus arthroscopy for the assessment of LHBT pathologies were included. RESULTS: Seven studies were included reporting on a total of 448 patients. One study on instability using ultrasound reported sensitivity and specificit

Rotator Cuff Injury and Repair.

Rotator cuff pathology is a commonly encountered clinical and radiologic entity that can manifest as tendinopathy or tearing. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasonography offer similar sensitivity and specificity for the evaluation of the native rotator cuff, and the chosen modality may vary, depending on local practice and accessibility. MR arthrography is frequently used in the postoperative setting as a problem-solving tool. Key findings to include in the preoperative MRI report include the size and location of the tear, thickness of the tendon involved (partial versus full thicknes

Editorial Commentary: Is It Time to Abandon the Latissimus Dorsi Tendon Transfer as a Salvage Procedure for Patients With Large Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tears That Failed Primary Repair?

The management of large irreparable rotator cuff tears in the young and active patient population without arthritis presents a challenge for shoulder surgeons due to the limited number of treatment options available that provide predictable outcomes. Latissimus dorsi tendon transfer (LDTT) for the treatment of large, irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears or as a salvage procedure for failed surgical (arthroscopic or open) repair was originally introduced in 1988. Multiple studies have reported both the short- and long-term outcomes after LDTT; however, the majority of these studies in

A new intramedullary fixation method for distal biceps tendon ruptures: a biomechanical study.

BACKGROUND: Various techniques have been described for distal biceps tendon reinsertion. Although high success rates have been reported, all current techniques have specific shortcomings, with complications such as heterotopic ossification, nerve damage, and gap formation. The purpose of the present study was to biomechanically evaluate a new intramedullary fixation device that might reduce the risk of posterior interosseous nerve lesions. We therefore compared the fixation strength of this new intramedullary button with an extramedullary placed classic extracortical button. METHODS: A standa

A Small Amount of Retraction Force Results in Inadvertent Piriformis Muscle Damage During a Piriformis-Sparing Approach to the Hip.

BACKGROUND: Piriformis-sparing approaches to the hip allow surgeons to avoid releasing the piriformis tendon during total hip arthroplasty; however, the consequences of retracting an intact piriformis tendon during such an approach remain ill-defined. The present study aimed to determine the upper limit of force that can be applied during retraction of the piriformis tendon to expose the hip, and to quantify the resultant damage to the piriformis musculotendinous complex. METHODS: A patent-pending instrumented retractor was designed to record the applied force, duration, and angle of retracti

The new LassoLoop360° technique for biomechanically superior tissue grip.

PURPOSE: Suprapectoral tenodesis is a frequently used technique for treating pathologies of the long head of the biceps brachii (LHBB) tendon. However, so far, no Gold Standard treatment exist. Hence, the arthroscopic LassoLoop360 (LL360) technique is introduced aiming to provide secure fixation and improved biomechanical properties. It was hypothesized, that the LL360 technique would show superior biomechanical response to cyclic loading and ultimate load-to-failure testing compared to the commonly used simple Lasso Loop (SLL). METHODS: Twenty-two porcine superficial flexor digitorum tendons

Imaging of Tendons of the Knee: Much More than just the Extensor Mechanism.

The tendons of the knee play a critical role in the motion and stability of the knee. Knee pain, a common clinical complaint, can frequently be attributed to pathology of these structures. While the cornerstones of the radiological evaluation of the knee are radiography and magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound can also play an important diagnostic role and can be useful for guided interventional procedures. Understanding the utility of each modality in the assessment for tendon pathology and a familiarity with the normal and abnormal imaging appearance of these structures are crucial for acc
