BACKGROUND: Anecdotal reports suggest that certain disorders are common in African hair and may be associated with hairstyles.
OBJECTIVES: A cross-sectional study of 1042 schoolchildren was performed to test this hypothesis.

Previous studies of experimental Bacillus anthracis cutaneous infections in mice have implicated hair follicles as a likely entry site. Hairless HRS/J mice were used to investigate this possibility because of their non-functional hair follicles that lack penetrating hair shafts. Androgenetic alopecia is a common form of hair loss, characterized by a progressive hair follicular miniaturization, caused by androgen hormones on a genetically susceptible hair follicle, in androgenic-dependent areas. Characteristic phenotype of androgenetic alopecia is also observed in many other hair disorders. These disorders are androgenetic-like diseases that cause many differential diagnosis or therapeutic error problems. The objective of this review was to systematically analyse the greatest number of conditions that mimic the AGA pattern and explain their disease pathogenesis.

We report a unique isolated hair and nail ectodermal dysplasia in a 3-year-old girl. Clinical examination revealed short, sparse scalp hair, absent eyebrows, short eyelashes and nail dystrophy in all digits. Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease where inflammation around the lowest part of the hair follicle results in non-scarring hair loss. This review investigates the course of the disease, its unpredictability and variation from a single patch of scalp hair loss to the loss of all hair on the body. The first drug with AA indication was approved in 2022, the JAK-inhibitor baricitinib.
