New filarial nematode from Japanese serows (Naemorhedus crispus: Bovidae) close to parasites from elephants.

A new onchocercid species, Loxodontofilaria caprini n. sp. (Filarioidea: Nematoda), found in subcutaneous tissues of 37 (33%) of 112 serows (Noemorhedus crispus) examined in Japan, is described. The female worm had the characteristics of Loxodontofilaria, e.g., the large body size, well-developed esophagus with a shallow buccal cavity, and the long tail with three caudal lappets. The male worm of the new species, which was first described in the genus, had unequal length of spicules, 10 pairs of pre- and post-caudal papillae, and three terminal caudal lappets. Deirids were present in both sexe

Clinical assessment of acid-base status. Strong ion difference theory.

The traditional approach to evaluating acid-base balance uses the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation to categorize four primary acid-base disturbances: respiratory acidosis (increased PCO2), respiratory alkalosis (decreased PCO2), metabolic acidosis (decreased extracellular base excess), or metabolic alkalosis (increased extracellular base excess). The anion gap is calculated to detect the presence of unidentified anions in plasma. This approach works well clinically and is recommended for use whenever serum total protein, albumin, and phosphate concentrations are approximately normal; however, wh

Immunohistochemical study of normal and mange (S. scabiei var. rupicaprae) infested chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra L.) skin.

The immunohistochemical study of chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra L.) skin showed that a limited number of available monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies expressed reactivity with skin cell components. These included cytokeratins, vimentin, desmin, neuron-specific enolase and S-100 protein with almost the same distribution pattern as already described in the skin of humans and animals. Antibodies used for labelling skin-associated lymphoid tissues and other cells with the immunologic function in human skin failed to demonstrate these cells in the chamois skin with the exception of LCA and OKT6 ant

Serum-free media for the in vitro cultivation of Cowdria ruminantium.

The in vitro culture of Cowdria ruminantium, the causative agent of heartwater in domestic ruminants, was first achieved in 1985; since then, most groups working with this culture system have used media which were supplemented with serum and, in addition, most of them contained tryptose phosphate broth. These undefined products vary from batch to batch and often fail to support the growth of C. ruminantium. We are therefore working towards the development of a completely chemically defined medium for Cowdria culture. We attempted the propagation of the Welgevonden stock of C. ruminantium in bo…

Antigenic characterization of Psoroptes spp. (Acari: Psoroptidae) mites from different hosts.

Immunoblotting with defined antigens and antisera revealed extensive and nearly complete antigenic cross-reactivity between Psoroptes spp. mites from a bighorn sheep, a mule deer, a cow, and a rabbit. Antigenic differences were not detected between mites from the sympatric bighorn sheep and mule deer. However, minor antigenic differences between mites from the cow and rabbit suggested that these mites were distinct from each other, as well as from the mites from the bighorn sheep and mule deer. These results are consistent with earlier morphologic studies of these populations of mites and prov

[Handling fear of cancer recurrence].

Some fear of cancer recurrence is normal and may even be adaptive. However, high levels of anxiety may become problematic as it often results in for example sleeping problems, rumination, avoiding (incl. medical appointments) and/or physical complaints. For general practitioners and specialists it is important to recognizing this fear, discuss and ask questions about it and know how to intervene and refer. Validation and psychoeducation may be sufficient when fear is relatively low and manageable. When fear starts to interfere with normal life referral to a psychologist in the hospital or spec

Characterisation of treatment resistant mood disorder patients in the United Arab Emirates.

There is paucity of mental health epidemiological data from the Middle East. Therein we present detailed clinical characterization of mood disorders patients from a university tertiary clinic established in the United Arab Emirates. The majority of patient experienced depressive and anxiety symptoms largely in the moderate range according to both self-rated and clinician rated scales, accompanied by significant co-morbidities, functional impairment, mild reduction in cognitive function, and a significant ruminative thinking style. These preliminary findings support the need for larger-scale re

How we continue bonds with deceased persons: The proximity-seeking behavior scale.

Continuing bonds is a multifaceted process, encompassing perceptions, beliefs, illusions and hallucinations, and overt behaviors. We developed the Proximity-Seeking Behavior Scale (PSBS) to assess overt behavior to continue bonds with the deceased person. We had 694 bereaved adults complete an online survey. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses yielded a one-factor model for PSBS items. PSBS reliability was good. PSBS scores correlated positively with rumination and yearning, feeling connected to the deceased person, and prolonged grief and depression symptoms. The PSBS appears a relia

Natural history of alpha-thalassemia X-linked intellectual disability syndrome: A case report of a 45-year-old man.

We have followed the clinical course of a 45-year-old man with a severe form of alpha-thalassemia X-linked intellectual disability syndrome for 40 years. The most challenging health issue is the combination of rumination, drooling, and vomiting. The patient achieved present adaptive and motor skills in his teenage years. He is able to move on the floor in a sitting position. He seems happy and has not shown any behavioral or psychiatric symptoms. New signs not described in the literature before are accelerated growth after puberty and atypical sleeping position with upper body resting on legs.

[Surgical removal of an intraperitoneal foreign body in a Swiss Simmental cow with a magnet].

This case report describes the surgical removal of a foreign body from the abdominal cavity in a Swiss Simmental cow with a disinfected magnet. The procedure was performed from the right flank a few days after a ruminotomy. An inflamed connective tissue mass was found and prepared. Since manual palpation could not locate the foreign body, a disinfected magnet was inserted into the mass and a crooked, headless nail of 3 cm length was removed. Ten days postsurgical antimicrobial treatment was necessary due to the local peritonitis. The cow recovered well after the second surgery and showed very

Testing the acceptability and initial efficacy of a smartphone-app mindfulness intervention for college student veterans with PTSD.

This single-arm, pre-post feasibility study evaluated the acceptability and initial efficacy of a mindfulness smartphone-app intervention intended to promote resilience and improve posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among college student military veterans. The app contained mindfulness exercises and meditations based on the acceptance and commitment therapy. Twenty-three student veterans used the app for four weeks. The results showed high levels of perceived satisfaction and usability of the app. Significant changes in resilience, mindfulness, PTSD, experiential avoidance, and rumi

The relative impacts of disclosure and secrecy: the role of (perceived) target response.

This review examines the current trends in understanding the impact of individuals' decisions to either disclose information or continue to conceal it. As a whole, the evidence points to a relative benefit of disclosure over secret-keeping, but with clear cases, in which disclosure may be harmful. Advances in knowledge about factors that shape that impact, new research on the role verbal rumination with a partner following disclosure, and attention to the role of communal coping as an outcome of traumatic disclosures are addressed. In addition, recent re-conceptualization of secret-keeping, an

Evaluation of Patients with Suspected Gastroparesis.

There is substantial overlap between the symptoms of gastroparesis and a variety of alternative disorders. These conditions include rumination syndrome, drug-induced gastric emptying delay, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, and eating disorders, which can be identified based on the history alone. The remaining patients require a diagnostic approach of physical examination, laboratory tests, evaluation with esophagogastroduodenoscopy or contrast radiography, and a test to measure gastric emptying. Symptomatic patients who have normal nutritional status and gastric emptying that is either normal

John Adams's Montesquieuean Moment: Enlightened Historicism in the Discourses on Davila.

At the outset of the French Revolution John Adams penned a series of Discourses of Davila, philosophical ruminations on the sixteenth-century French Wars of Religion. Recent historians have read these Discourses in terms of Adams's Machiavellianism-his conviction that men's passions lead to violence, if unrestrained. But this reading overlooks the extent to which Adams intended his Discourses as a particular investigation into the French nation's character, and into whether the revolutionaries could lay claim to a native, French tradition of mixed constitutional government. Situating the Disco

Applying critical thinking to nursing.

Critical thinking and writing are skills that are not easy to acquire. The term 'critical' is used differently in social and clinical contexts. Nursing students need time to master the inquisitive and ruminative aspects of critical thinking that are required in academic environments. This article outlines what is meant by critical thinking in academic settings, in relation to both theory and reflective practice. It explains how the focus of a question affects the sort of critical thinking required and offers two taxonomies of learning, to which students can refer when analysing essay requireme

Unexpected death or suicide by a child or adolescent: improving responses and preparedness of child and adolescent psychiatry trainees.

The death of a young patient is a difficult but universal experience in the field of medicine. It is less common in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. However, when a child or adolescent patient commits suicide, a child and adolescent psychiatry trainee's response could include shock, denial, disbelief, sadness, sleep difficulties, rumination about patient's death, fears of litigation, social withdrawal, and a sense of failure. Trainees generally find themselves dealing with the academic, personal, administrative, and legal consequences of this unfortunate but unavoidable event. Thi

Dissonance induction and reduction: a possible principle and connectionist mechanism for why therapies are effective.

Several empirically supported treatments for depression are currently available with little understanding of either principles or mechanisms that are responsible for their effectiveness. This article reviews existing principles and finds that they contain little mechanism information. A connectionist mechanism used to explain why systematic desensitization and response prevention are effective in treating anxiety disorders is reviewed and generalized to understand why empirically supported treatments of depression work. This mechanism suggests a dissonance induction followed by reduction princ

The centrality of event scale: a measure of integrating a trauma into one's identity and its relation to post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms.

We introduce a new scale that measures how central an event is to a person's identity and life story. For the most stressful or traumatic event in a person's life, the full 20-item Centrality of Event Scale (CES) and the short 7-item scale are reliable (alpha's of .94 and .88, respectively) in a sample of 707 undergraduates. The scale correlates .38 with PTSD symptom severity and .23 with depression. The present findings are discussed in relation to previous work on individual differences related to PTSD symptoms. Possible connections between the CES and measures of maladaptive attributions an
