Total Lip Reconstruction after Excision of Cancer with Composite Radial Forearm Palmaris Longus Tendon Free Flap.

Reconstruction of total lip is a challenging task for a plastic surgeon. It becomes more complicated when there is loss of additional tissues like angle of mouth, buccal mucosa or floor of the mouth. Radial forearm flap with palmaris longus tendon provides an easier but reliable technique for three dimensional lip reconstructions with good functional and aesthetic outcome. In this short observational series we included 5 patients of total lip reconstruction and conducted at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and Private Clinic of Sylhet, Bangladesh from January 2014 to December 2017. A

Biomechanical Analysis of Zone 2 Flexor Tendon Repair With a Coupler Device Versus Locking Cruciate Core Suture.

PURPOSE: To compare flexor tendon repair strength and speed between a tendon coupler and a standard-core suture in a cadaver model. METHODS: In 5 matched-pair fresh cadaver hands, we cut the flexor digitorum profundus tendon of each finger in zone 2 and assigned 20 tendons to both the coupler and the suture groups. Coupler repair was with low-profile stainless steel staple plates in each tendon stump, bridged by polyethylene thread. Suture repair was performed using an 8-strand locking-cruciate technique with 4-0 looped, multifilament, polyamide suture. One surgeon with the Subspecialty Certi

Muscular involvement and tendon contracture in limb-girdle muscular dystrophy 2Y: a mild adult phenotype and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Limb girdle muscular dystrophy type 2Y (LGMD2Y) is a rare subgroup of limb girdle muscular dystrophy featuring limb-girdle weakness, tendon contracture and cardiac involvement. It is caused by the mutation of TOR1AIP1, which encodes nuclear membrane protein LAP1 (lamina-associated polypeptide 1) and comprises heterogeneous phenotypes. The present study reported a patient with a novel homozygous TOR1AIP1 mutation that presented with selective muscle weakness, which further expanded the phenotype of LGMD2Y- and TOR1AIP1-associated nuclear envelopathies. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-

Prenatal Diagnosis and Management of a Rare Central Tendon Defect Type of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia with a Massive Pericardial Effusion.

The central tendon defect type of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is extremely rare and usually associated with a significant pericardial effusion. Prenatal diagnostic ultrasound features of this quite rare entity remain often overlooked or misdiagnosed. There is a dearth of literature about the role of prenatal intervention, often through an elective pericardiocentesis, for the prevention of lung hypoplasia and to decrease the overall neonatal morbidity and mortality. To the best of our knowledge, till date, there is only one case that was subjected to a prenatal intervention. Here, we

Prospective randomized clinical trial of open operative, minimally invasive and conservative treatments of acute Achilles tendon tear.

INTRODUCTION: The acute Achilles tendon rupture (AATR) is a common injury of great importance in an increasingly active society. When early functional treatment is established, recent literature shows comparable rates of re-rupture in conservative and surgical treatments of AATR. However, there is no study comparing the outcome using a dynamometer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the results of patients with AATR treated conservatively and surgically using a dynamometer. In addition, the data are compared to evaluation of the Achilles tendon with ultrasound. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Betwee

Ruptured Extensor Pollicis Longus Tendon After a Nondisplaced Distal Radius Fracture in a Young Adult Soccer Player.

Forearm fractures of the distal radius are one of the most common fractures seen in the upper extremity, and they represent approximately 1/6 of fractures treated in the emergency department. Forearm fractures are associated with a rare but known complication of a delayed ruptured extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon. This sequela is more commonly seen in adults after a nondisplaced distal radius fracture, with much variability in the incidence ranging from 0.07% to 5%. By contrast, this complication in the pediatric population is almost exclusively seen after a displaced or unstable fracture

Development of a musculoskeletal model of the wrist to predict frictional work dissipated due to tendon gliding resistance in the carpal tunnel.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is an entrapment neuropathy that has been associated with the aggravation of tendon gliding resistance due to forceful, high velocity, awkwardly angled, and repetitive wrist motions. Cadaveric and epidemiological studies have shown that combinations of these risk factors have a more than additive effect. The aim of the current study was to develop a musculoskeletal model of the wrist that could evaluate these risk factors by simulating frictional work dissipated due to the gliding resistance of the third flexor digitorum superficialis tendon. Three flexion angle zones, t

Fibular Tip Periostitis: New Radiographic Sign Predictive of Chronic Peroneal Tendon Subluxation-Dislocation in Pes Planovalgus.

BACKGROUND. Tearing of the superior peroneal retinaculum is a known cause of peroneal tendon subluxation-dislocation. However, with the exception of cortical avulsions at the fibular attachment, superior peroneal retinaculum injury and subsequent peroneal tendon subluxation-dislocation are typically radiographically occult. OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the previously undescribed association between radiographic fibular tip periostitis and MRI evidence of peroneal tendon subluxation-dislocation in patients with hindfoot valgus. METHODS. Thirty-five patients with radiogra

Enhanced tenogenic differentiation and tendon-like tissue formation by Scleraxis overexpression in human amniotic mesenchymal stem cells.

Tendon and ligament injuries are not uncommon in clinics and have poor self-healing capacity due to their bloodless and slow-proliferative nature. Promoting the repair or reconstruction of an injured structure is an urgent problem. While Scleraxis (Scx) is a highly specific tendon cell marker, its function has not been explored to a large extent. Hence, Recombinant adenovirus was used to study the influence of Scx overexpression on directional differentiation of human amniotic mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCAs). hAMSCs modified with Scx could dramatically enhance the gene expression of tendon-rel

Biomechanical testing of various suture techniques for Achilles tendon repair with and without augmentation by using synthetic polyester grafts.

Following surgical Achilles tendon reconstruction surgery, there is a distinct trend towards an early and faster rehabilitation protocol to avoid muscle atrophy. However, this procedure involves the risk of a higher complication rate. In order to reduce the occurrence of re-ruptures and pathological tendon extensions, a tendon reconstruction with the highest possible primary stability is desirable. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine if augmentation using synthetic polyester tapes (QuadsTape™) could provide greater primary stability in case of different tendon suture techniques.

The Effects of Nerve and Tendon Gliding Exercises Combined with Low-level Laser or Ultrasound Therapy in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common medical condition that doctors and physiotherapists come across in clinical practice. There are no explicit recommendations concerning which physical therapy methods should be applied in its treatment; however, there have also been no studies on the effects of combining low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or ultrasound with nerve and tendon gliding exercises. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of ultrasound and LLLT combined with gliding exercises. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of seventy patients with mild to mo
