Biomechanical comparison of different internal fixation devices for transversely unstable Mason type II radial head fractures.

Background: The integrity of the radial head is critical to maintaining elbow joint stability. For radial head fractures requiring surgical treatment, headless compression cannulated screw fixation is a less invasive scheme that has fewer complications. The aim of this study was to compare the mechanical stability of different fixation devices, including headless compression cannulated screws and mini-T-plates, for the fixation of transversely unstable radial head fractures. Methods: Forty identical synthetic radius bones were used to construct transverse unstable radial head fracture models.

Minimally Invasive Plate Osteosynthesis Using Locking Plates for AO 43-Type Fractures: Lessons Learnt From a Prospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Managing fractures of distal tibia is still a subject of debate for orthopaedic surgeons in terms of both, reduction and fixation. Subcutaneous location and soft tissue anatomy predisposes it to angular and rotational instability as well as other bony and soft tissue complexities. Minimally invasive plating offers many advantages over conventional open techniques. It causes minimal soft tissue dissection and surgical trauma to the bone. Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis(MIPO) maintains biological configuration of distal tibia and fracture hematoma and also provides a constr

Experience with the use of a partial ossicular replacement prosthesis with a ball-and-socket joint between the plate and the shaft.

BACKGROUND: In the further development of alloplastic prostheses for use in middle ear surgery, the Dresden and Cologne University Hospitals, working together with a company, introduced a new partial ossicular replacement prosthesis in 2011. The ball-and-socket joint between the prosthesis and the shaft mimics the natural articulations between the malleus and incus and between the incus and stapes, allowing reaction to movements of the tympanic membrane graft, particularly during the healing process. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective evaluation METHODS: To reconstruct sound conduction as part of a

The pterygoid hamulus: description of its anatomy, topography and clinical implications - a review of literature.

The pterygoid hamulus is a bony process that protrudes from the medial pterygoid plate of the sphenoid bone. In spite of its small size and fragile structure, the pterygoid hamulus is an important anatomical structure in many clinical aspects. Orofacial pain may be related to inflammation or irritation of the pterygoid hamulus; if not, other possible explanations should be explored. In addition, the pterygoid hamulus is an important landmark in the oral cavity and is utilized in a number of dental and medical procedures. Thus, the purpose of this work was to review recent studies demonstrating

Palmar dislocation in the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb--a case report.

A 19-year-old male sustained forced hyperflexion of his right thumb in a motorcycle accident which resulted in a palmar dislocation of the metacarpophalangeal joint. Open reduction was performed which confirmed the rupture of the palmar plate. Dislocation recurred post-operatively. A second operation was carried out, at which time rupture of the radial collateral ligament and dorsal capsule was recognised. Postoperative joint movement was within an acceptable range. However, radiographic examination revealed persistent subluxation. This result was thought to be related to the shape of the head

Aneurysmal bone cyst treated by high-energy, low-dose radiation therapy: a case report.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are frequently treated surgically, but recurrence is not uncommon and surgery is hazardous when the lesion is large and adjacent to the growth plate. High-energy, low-dose radiation to an 8-year-old girl with ABC of the distal tibia was found to be successful, with no recurrence during the five-year follow up. No complications have ensued, and excellent function has been sustained. Further evaluation of this radiation treatment is important for similar situations in which surgical excision of ABC may involve high risk.

Erosive intervertebral osteochondrosis in association with generalized osteoarthritis and chondroc alcinosis; anatomico-radiological study of a case.

This paper concerns a radiological and postmortem study of an 81-year-old woman with diffuse intervertebral osteochondrosis (T12-L1 severe erosion) in association with generalized osteoarthritis and articular chondrocalcinosis. Varying degrees of cartilage plate flaws with cartilaginous Schmorl's nodes and vertebral plateaux erosion are shown to occur without calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposits in situ. Differential diagnosis between intervertebral osteochondrosis and infectious spondylitis may require a combination of tomographic evolution over time, bone scans and biopsy, the latter being

[New concepts for stabilizing proximal humeral fractures].

The treatment of proximal humerus fractures is overshadowed by problems like avascular humeral head necrosis, implant failure in osteopenic bone and moderate outcome, especially in the elderly. More precise imaging, a better understanding of the vascularity of the humeral head leading to indirect reduction techniques and new implants which allow for saver fixation even in osteopenic bone, allowing early functional aftercare, are the new promising factors which have the potential to ameliorate fracture treatment of the humeral head. A prerequisit for sucessful treatment is a thoroughful imaging

[Radical surgery and vertebral body replacement in aneurysmal bone cysts of the spine].

6 cases of aneurysmal bone cyst of the spine are presented. The clinical picture, diagnostic procedures and operative treatment will be discussed. Although aneurysmal bone cyst is a benign, non-neoplastic lesion its spreading tumor growth with destruction of important bony structures of the vertebral body, consecutive instability and cord compression presents a considerable menace to the mostly teenage-patient. Spinal computerized tomography is the diagnostic method of choice. The goal of surgical therapy of the aneurysmal bone cyst of the spine should include radical tumor excision in order t
