Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are a causative agent of cervical cancer and are implicated in several other types of malignant disease including cancer of the vulva, oral cancer, and skin cancer. In HPV-transformed cells, expression of the viral E6 and E7 oncogenes increases cell proliferation and inhibits apoptosis. Expression of the viral E2 protein in HPV-transformed cells represses transcription of E6 and E7 and induces apoptosis and/or growth arrest. We have shown previously that herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) VP22-HPV E2 fusion proteins can traffic between cells and induce apoptosis.

BACKGROUND: Women continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV in Tanzania, and factors contributing to this situation need to be identified. The objective of this study was to determine social, behavioral and biological risk factors of HIV infection among pregnant women in Moshi urban, Tanzania. In 2002-2004, consenting women (N = 2654), attending primary health clinics for routine antenatal care were interviewed, examined and biological samples collected for diagnosis of HIV and other sexually transmitted/reproductive tract infections.

OBJECTIVE: To identify any preferential or selective migration of T-cell specificities to inflamed tissues of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients.
METHODS: Lymphocytes from peripheral blood (PB) and synovial tissue (ST) were isolated from RA patients and stimulated with a panel of crude antigen preparations from 18 bacterial, protozoan and viral sources. Proliferative responses of the T lymphocytes to each antigen and group of antigens were compared in PB and ST. OBJECTIVE: To explore the correlation between human parvovirus B19 (HPV-B19) and congenital heart (CHD) and to investigate the teratogenic effect of HPV-B19.
METHODS: A case control study was conducted to investigate the embedded autopsy cardiac tissues of 29 cases of CHD and 30 controls without CHD with nest polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
