The Collaborative Longitudinal Evaluation of Keratoconus (CLEK) Survey represents the largest sample of clinic-based keratoconus patients to date. Data were collected at 38 clinical centers on 1,579 keratoconus patients. This article reports demographic variable, ages, self-reported ages at diagnosis, keratometry, slit-lamp findings, systemic disease, family history of keratoconus, and best spectacle-corrected and contact lens-corrected visual acuity of this sample group. Patients with early age-related macular degeneration (AMD) may retain good visual acuity but experience distortion and other qualitative visual changes. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether deficits of form recognition, as well as of light sensitivity, were related to retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) atrophy and/or drusen. We assessed form recognition deficits by the Amsler grid and by a perimetric test of letter recognition and sensitivity deficits by the macular threshold test of the Humphrey Field Analyzer in 59 patients with AMD and visual acuities of 20/40 or better.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that refractive stabilization occurs rapidly following small incision cataract surgery. Nonetheless, many guidelines still suggest waiting four to 6 weeks before prescribing corrective lenses. BACKGROUND: Glucocorticoid-resistant giant cell arteritis (GCA) describes a subgroup of patients whose visual acuity further declines despite immediate administration of high-dose intravenous glucocorticoids. Tocilizumab, a recombinant humanized anti-interleukin-6 receptor monoclonal antibody may be used as "rescue" therapy in these cases but requires more research.
