The objective of this study was to describe the perioperative course of a cohort of patients with glycogen storage diseases. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of patients with glycogen storage diseases undergoing anesthetic care at our institution from January 1, 1990, thr

Management and leadership competencies in Emergency Medicine specialist training: a review with implications for African programmes.

INTRODUCTION: Management and leadership are core competency domains in emergency medicine (EM) specialist training worldwide, yet they remain less clearly articulated and less consistently assessed than clinical skills, particularly in African and other low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings. METHODS: Review of peer-reviewed and grey literature. Electronic searches of PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, ERIC, and Web of Science were conducted from database inception to March 2026, supplemented by hand-searching of five journals and six organisational repositories. Sources were included if they de

From Past to Present: Transformation of Food Safety Management and Food Safety Culture in the California Almond Industry.

The California almond industry underwent a remarkable transformation in food safety management and culture following outbreaks of salmonellosis associated with the consumption of raw almonds in 2000-2001 and 2003-2004. However, limited studies have examined these changes from a longitudinal perspective. This study documents the transformation of food safety management in the California almond industry over an 18-year period, explores indicators of change in food safety culture, identifies the key factors driving these changes, and examines the determinants of industry-wide technology adoption.

Reasons for introducing self-intermittent urinary catheterization and long-term outcomes in individuals with multiple sclerosis: a retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with multiple sclerosis (IwMS) frequently suffer from bladder disorders, and intermittent self-catheterization (ISC) is often part of management. The aim of this study was to determine the main reason for ISC introduction, and assess the outcome of this management at short and long term. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective study included all IwMS who learned ISC between 2018 and 2024. Data were collected upon ISC introduction (T0), 6-12 months later (T1), and at the last follow-up (T2). RESULTS: One hundred fifty-nine participants were classified according to the reason fo

BACKGROUND: Seizure emergencies (ie, status epilepticus [SE] and cluster seizures [CS]), are common challenging disorders with complex pathophysiology, rapidly progressive drug-resistant and self-sustaining character, and high morbidity and mortality. Current treatment approaches are characterized by considerable variations, but official guidelines are lacking. OBJECTIVES: To establish evidence-based guidelines and an agreement among board-certified specialists for the appropriate management of SE and CS in dogs and cats. ANIMALS: None. Methotrexate toxicity in psoriasis-A multicentric retrospective study.

Even today methotrexate (MTX) remains the backbone of psoriasis management in dermatological practice. The widespread usage as well as over the counter availability of drug in India has led to frequent incidents of overdosing, resulting in toxicity. However, there is a lack of large size, comprehensive study in literature emphasizing upon reasons behind drug toxicity, clinical manifestations, and various management aspects. The present study aims to evaluate risk factors, clinical features, and suggest best management protocol based upon our experience in the management of MTX toxicity. A mult

Developing Mobile Apps to Support Clinical Management of HIV Patients: An Observational Study.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a significant global health challenge, especially in Europe, including Italy, where it affects thousands. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has turned HIV into a manageable chronic condition, improving the quality of life and life expectancy for people living with HIV (PLWH). Enhancing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is essential, as it positively influences therapy adherence. The objective of the study was to evaluate the impact of the AURORA system, a self-monitoring tool designed for HIV+ patients, on their quality of life and healthcare managemen

Delivery fidelity of the REACT (REtirement in ACTion) physical activity and behaviour maintenance intervention for community dwelling older people with mobility limitations.

BACKGROUND: Fidelity assessment of behaviour change interventions is vital to understanding trial outcomes. This study assesses the delivery fidelity of behaviour change techniques used in the Retirement in ACTion (REACT) randomised controlled trial. REACT is a community-based physical activity (PA) and behaviour maintenance intervention to prevent decline of physical functioning in older adults (≥ 65 years) at high risk of mobility-related disability in the UK. METHODS: The delivery fidelity of intervention behaviour change techniques and delivery processes were assessed using multi-observer

[Jehovah's witness patients in obstetrics : challenges and strategies].

The refusal of blood transfusions by Jehovah's Witness patients is a major challenge in obstetrics. Although transfusions are rare (1.4 % in obstetrics), the lack of blood transfusions during severe hemorrhage significantly increases the risk of maternal death. This article analyzes the shift in the ethical paradigm in Switzerland, marked by the transition from paternalism to respect for the self-determination of the competent patient. It details blood management strategies (PBM), ranging from antenatal hemoglobin optimization to early surgical hemostasis. Multidisciplinary planning and the fo

Acute Calcific Periarthritis Beyond the Shoulder: A Case Report of Fifth MCP Involvement.

Acute calcific periarthritis (ACP) is a self-limiting periarticular process caused by calcium hydroxyapatite crystal deposition, most commonly affecting the shoulder and rarely involving the hand. We present a case of a 33-year-old woman with acute pain and swelling of the right fifth metacarpophalangeal joint after minor trauma. Radiographs and ultrasonography confirmed periarticular calcification consistent with ACP. The patient was treated with NSAIDs, corticosteroids, and immobilization, resulting in full recovery. This case highlights ACP's diagnostic challenge at atypical sites, where it

Balloon-Expandable Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: A Comprehensive Review of Current Evidence and Clinical Outcomes.

This article outlines the transformative impact of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) since its first successful human use in 2002, redefining the management of severe aortic stenosis. Traditionally treated with surgical aortic valve replacement, many elderly patients with comorbidities were unsuitable for surgery. TAVR has emerged as a less invasive and widely adopted alternative, expanding from high-risk to low-risk populations with strong clinical outcomes. Its rapid global uptake and potential role in earlier intervention highlight its clinical significance. The article also int

From theory to practice: insights into intervention development of the NON-STOP app for children with Perthes' disease.

The development of interventions in healthcare often lacks a robust theoretical basis, which may contribute to suboptimal engagement and effectiveness. This paper provides insights into and practical guidance on the development of complex interventions in healthcare, using the example of a digital self-management tool for children with Perthes' disease, called the Non-Surgical Treatment of Perthes' (NON-STOP) app. We applied the Medical Research Council framework, used psychological theory, and integrated stakeholder engagement to develop the intervention. The lessons learned and consideration
