Exposure to Computed Tomography Before Pregnancy and Risk for Pregnancy Loss and Congenital Anomalies : A Population-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Animal studies show ovarian follicle damage and mutagenesis after ionizing radiation exposure. Computed tomography (CT) imaging is commonly done outside pregnancy, but risks to future pregnancy are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk for spontaneous pregnancy loss and congenital anomalies in offspring of women exposed to CT ionizing radiation before conception. DESIGN: Population-based observational study. SETTING: Ontario, Canada. PARTICIPANTS: 5 142 339 recognized pregnancies and 3 451 968 live births identified between 1992 and 2023. MEASUREMENTS: The exposure was the

Pregnancy after successful cancer treatment: what needs to be considered?

Over the last decade, advances in oncology led to improved treatment results and increasing numbers of long-term cancer survivors. Fulfilling the desire to have children is important for many patients after cancer treatment. Consequently, oncologists, gynecologists and obstetricians are seeing more patients who wish to conceive after treatment. The necessary prerequisites that should be considered when supporting a planned pregnancy after cancer treatment are discussed in this article. The possible consequences of chemotherapy and radiotherapy on the course of pregnancy and the health of the o

A multichannel feature-based approach for longitudinal lung CT registration in the presence of radiation induced lung damage.

Quantifying parenchymal tissue changes in the lungs is imperative in furthering the study of radiation induced lung damage (RILD). Registering lung images from different time-points is a key step of this process. Traditional intensity-based registration approaches fail this task due to the considerable anatomical changes that occur between timepoints. This work proposes a novel method to successfully register longitudinal pre- and post-radiotherapy (RT) lung computed tomography (CT) scans that exhibit large changes due to RILD, by extracting consistent anatomical features from CT (lung boundar

Chornobyl, radiation, neural tube defects, and microcephaly.

Pregnant women residing in areas impacted by the Chornobyl ionizing radiation of the Rivne Province in Ukraine have persistent higher levels of incorporated cesium-137. In these areas the neural tube defects and microcephaly rates are significantly higher than in areas with lower maternal cesium-137 incorporated levels. In two Rivne counties with populations proximal to nuclear power plants the rates of neural tube defects and microcephaly are the highest in the province. The neural tube defects rates in Rivne are persistently among the highest in Europe.

Effect of microwave irradiation (2.45 GHz, CW) on egg weight loss, egg hatchability, and hatchling growth of the Coturnix quail.

Fertile eggs of the Coturnix quail were exposed twice a day for 30 min to 2.45-GHz continuous wave radiation at power densities of 25 or 50 mW cm-2 throughout the 17-day incubation period. Other eggs were exposed to 20 degrees C or 24 degrees C temperatures twice daily. Repeated exposures to 20 degrees C, 24 degrees C, or 25 mW cm-2 did not reduce hatchability. Irradiation at 50 mW cm-2 lowered hatchability, probably as a result of high egg temperatures. Hatchlings that had been irradiated by microwaves as embryos had normal growth rates and no obvious developmental abnormalities.

Monsters with a shortened vertebral column: A population phenomenon in radiating fish Labeobarbus (Cyprinidae).

The phenomenon of a massive vertebral deformity was recorded in the radiating Labeobarbus assemblage from the middle reaches of the Genale River (south-eastern Ethiopia, East Africa). Within this sympatric assemblage, five trophic morphs-generalized, lipped, piscivorous and two scraping feeders-were reported between 1993 and 2019. In 2009, a new morph with prevalence of ~10% was discovered. The new morph, termed 'short', had an abnormally shortened vertebral column and a significantly deeper body. This type of deformity is common in farmed Atlantic salmon and other artificially reared fish, bu

[A rare case of symmetrical double abnormality].

A rare case of symmetric incomplete too headed four-handed conjoined twins which was delivered in the Sixth gestational month spontaneously has been demonstrated. These malformations are very seldom with a frequency of one to 65,000 up to 100,000 newborn. Questions about teratogenicity are discussed.

Aspects of fetal thyroid dose following iodine-131 administration during early stages of pregnancy in patients suffering from benign thyroid disorders.

Detrimental effects on the thyroid of the developing fetus as a result of iodine-131 treatment for thyrotoxicosis of the mother in the first trimester of pregnancy are discussed. Dose estimations under typical clinical circumstances yield a fetal thyroid dose of 100- 450 Sv. This dose may increase considerably if the blood concentration of (131)I in the mother remains high. Under such circumstances there may be fetal thyroid dysfunction, which can lead to severe abnormalities.

Protective effect of selenium against ionizing radiation-induced malformations in mice.

A single dose of sodium selenite (0.5 mg Se/kg b.w.) was injected intraperitoneally into mice on day 9 of pregnancy, either 30 min or 2 h before 1.75 Gy whole body irradiation. Administration of selenite 2 h but not 30 min before irradiation resulted in a significant decrease in the number of malformed foetuses (p less than 0.005). The decrease in foetal malformations occurred proportionally for all the major malformations observed, i.e. short or kinked tail, rib and vertebral malformations, coloboma and deformation of retina and iris. In addition, selenium pretreatment also protected against

Effects of white light on the pineal gland of the chick embryo.

Chick embryos were directly exposed to a source of white light during incubation and sacrificed before hatching. The light caused a number of teratological effects such as high mortality, delay in development, celosomy, hepatomegaly, auricular dilation and micrognatia. The pineal gland of the illuminated embryos showed an increase in number and size of the intracytoplasmic lipid droplets of the follicular pinealocytes. These findings suggest that the pineal gland of the chick embryo is sensitive to light.

[Contribution and limitations of experimental models to the understanding of certain abnormalities of the face and ear].

The analysis of 4 craniofacial teratological models in the mouse (13-cis-retinoic acid and methyl triazene administration, irradiation, 'far' strain) permits to study the similarities, but also the differences between these models and malformative syndromes in the human. Retinoic acid administration provides a phenocopy of mandibulofacial dysostosis, and irradiation gives rise to a centrofacial dysplasia evoking several holoprosencephalia and Crouzon syndrome. However, triazene administration does not reproduce the hemicraniofacial microsomia.

Utility of polaprezinc in reducing toxicities during radiotherapy: a literature review.

Chemoradiotherapy is important for treating malignancies. However, radiation-induced toxicities develop as chemoradiotherapy-related complications. Various agents reduce or prevent toxicities, but there are no standard treatments. Polaprezinc (PZ), a chelating compound used for gastric ulcers, has antioxidant and free radical scavenging effects. Although few studies have evaluated PZ and radiation-induced normal tissue damage, several clinical studies have shown the efficacy of PZ for oral mucositis, esophagitis, proctitis and taste alterations during and after radiotherapy. Moreover, preclini

Effects and consequences of prenatal irradiation.

After a brief introduction about the historic development of risk estimates and maximum permissible doses of ionizing radiation, the risks of prenatal irradiation are discussed. Experimental data mainly obtained with mice indicate that the most important risk exists during the period of organogenesis and concerns the induction of malformations. Although in man this period lies between about 10 and 80 days after fertilization for most organs, the main development of the brain occurs later, namely between the 8th and 15th week after conception. Data from Japanese victims of the atomic bomb explo

LONG/TERM GENETIC AND EPIGENETIC DISORDERS IN PERSONS EXPOSED TO IONIZING RADIATION AND THEIR DESCENDANTS (review).

The review is devoted to long-term genetic and epigenetic disorders in exposed individuals and their descendants, namely to cytogenetic effects in the Chornobyl NPP accident clean-up workers and their children, DNA methylation as an epigenetic modification of human genome. Data presented in review expand the understanding of risk of the prolonged exposure for the present and future generations, which is one of key problems posed by fundamental radiation genetics and human radiobiology.

Evidence for a teratogenic risk in the offspring of health personnel exposed to ionizing radiation?!

BACKGROUND: The evidence concerning safety of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation on teratogenic effects mainly relies on animal models, disaster epidemiology and experience in cancer etiology. Following an explorative result on maternal exposure in medical occupations we conducted a feasibility study, addressing congenital anomalies (CA) in the offspring of health workers potentially exposed to radiation. METHODS: In a prospective follow-up study, we enrolled women, identified by mandatory registration at the office of radiation protection as wearing a dosimeter. The participating wo

[Study of the relation between dose of ionizing radiation and level of chromosome abnormalities in an adult patient following total body irradiation].

The dose-effect relationship for dicentric chromosome aberrations and centric rings was studied in a female patient exposed to whole-body gamma irradiation for myeloid leukaemia. Samples were taken before and at different times during the exposure. The dose-effect relationship is on the linear-quadratic type and practically identical with those found earlier when the blood from adults and children was irradiated in vitro and only slightly above that of children irradiated in vivo.
