"Screening" for End of Life Using Artificial Intelligence: A Qualitative Study of Palliative Care Team Members' Perspectives on Ethical Use.

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) tools for health care applications are rapidly emerging. Some AI-based prognostic tools can predict patient mortality automatically and with accuracy that outperforms clinicians and other available tools. In palliative care (PC), these tools may change practice in ways we do not fully understand and raise important ethical and implementation questions. Objective: Identify the ethical challenges that could shape the implementation of AI-based prognostication in PC. Design: We conducted a qualitative study using semistructured interviews and a modified gr

Digital phenotyping of generalized anxiety disorder: using artificial intelligence to accurately predict symptom severity using wearable sensors in daily life.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a highly prevalent condition. Monitoring GAD symptoms requires substantial time, effort, and cost. The development of digital phenotypes of GAD may enable new scalable, timely, and inexpensive assessments of GAD symptoms. METHOD: The current study used passive movement data collected within a large national cohort (N = 264) to assess GAD symptom severity. RESULTS: Using one week of movement data, machine learning models accurately predicted GAD symptoms across a continuum (r = 0.511) and accurately detected those individuals with elevated GAD

Extracorporeal life support without systemic anticoagulation: a nitric oxide-based non-thrombogenic circuit for the artificial placenta in an ovine model.

BACKGROUND: Clinical translation of the extracorporeal artificial placenta (AP) is impeded by the high risk for intracranial hemorrhage in extremely premature newborns. The Nitric Oxide Surface Anticoagulation (NOSA) system is a novel non-thrombogenic extracorporeal circuit. This study aims to test the NOSA system in the AP without systemic anticoagulation. METHODS: Ten extremely premature lambs were delivered and connected to the AP. For the NOSA group, the circuit was coated with DBHD-N2O2/argatroban, 100 ppm nitric oxide was blended into the sweep gas, and no systemic anticoagulation was g

Validation of the Symu™ Flexible Ureteroscopy Platform Based on Real-Life Pulsed Tm:YAG Lithotripsy Using Specific 3D-Printed Artificial Stones.

INTRODUCTION: Simulation has become central in flexible ureteroscopy training and research; however, the lack of standardized and reproducible models limits objective performance assessment. We aimed to evaluate the reliability and reproducibility of laser lithotripsy using morphology-specific artificial stones (AS) within a standardized ex vivo platform and to assess whether the model could detect operator-dependent differences in lithotripsy performance. METHODS: This study was conducted using AS derived from 3D-printed images of human kidney stones. Six stone volume categories (F1-F6; 250-

Bridging Trials and Real Life in Fixed-Duration BTKi-Venetoclax for CLL: A Delphi-Enhanced Synthesis Incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) Benchmarks.

BACKGROUND: Optimal patient selection for the most effective BTK inhibitor (BTKi) partner of venetoclax in fixed-duration (FD) BTKi-venetoclax regimens for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) remains uncertain. This uncertainty largely reflects trial populations that are younger and fitter than many real-world patients, which may limit generalizability to older individuals or those with multiple comorbidities. The present study aims to provide harmonized, pragmatic guidance that bridges trial evidence and routine clinical practice for physicians caring for patients within a regional Italian are

Developing under artificial light is not so bright: Oxidative stress as a physiological response to light pollution across amphibian life stages.

Light pollution has emerged as a new environmental challenge. Natural light has long been a selecting force in shaping physiological, morphological and behavioral traits across species. The introduction of artificial light at night (ALAN) disrupts the natural light-dark cycle, affecting a broad range of biological processes. In amphibians, ALAN has been suggested as a potential driver behind demographic declines in recent years. In this study, we investigated how exposure to cold LED light affects the development, body length, and oxidative status of the European tree frog (Hyla arborea). Indi

Early life exposure to artificial light at night affects the physiological condition: An experimental study on the ecophysiology of free-living nestling songbirds.

Light pollution or artificial light at night (ALAN) is increasingly recognised to be an important anthropogenic environmental pressure on wildlife, affecting animal behaviour and physiology. Early life experiences are extremely important for the development, physiological status and health of organisms, and as such, early exposure to artificial light may have detrimental consequences for organism fitness. We experimentally manipulated the light environment of free-living great tit nestlings (Parus major), an important model species in evolutionary and environmental research. Haptoglobin (Hp) a

The PALLI-AI Framework: An Evidence-Informed Checklist for Designing and Reporting Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence Tools in Palliative and End-of-Life Care.

Background/Objectives: Artificial intelligence (AI) is being applied across palliative and end-of-life care, including prognostication, symptom detection, clinical documentation, communication support, decision support and care coordination. General AI reporting guidelines exist, but none captures the value-sensitive requirements specific to palliative care, which is integrated from the diagnosis of a serious illness and spans the whole trajectory, alongside disease-directed treatment, to the end of life and bereavement. We aimed to develop an evidence-informed checklist to guide the design an
