Electrical impedance spectroscopy detects skin barrier dysfunction in childhood atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Skin barrier dysfunction is associated with the development of atopic dermatitis (AD), however methods to assess skin barrier function are limited. We investigated the use of electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to detect skin barrier dysfunction in children with AD of the CARE (Childhood AlleRgy, nutrition, and Environment) cohort. METHODS: EIS measurements taken at multiple time points from 4 months to 3-year-old children, who developed AD (n = 66) and those who did not (n = 49) were investigated. Using only the EIS measurement and the AD status, we developed a machine learni

Bioimpedance Sensing Surgical Drill - In Vivo Porcine Model.

Surgical drilling to place dental implants in the mandible and maxilla is associated high risk of iatrogenic injuries to inferior alveolar nerve and maxillary sinus. Real-time tissue margin sensing at the drill-tip using electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) could reduce this risk by providing feedback to surgeons. Studies with saline analogues, ex-vivo tissues, in-situ tissues and computer models have been previously conducted to evaluate these impedance sensors. Understanding in-vivo electrical properties of tissues in the mandible and maxilla is critical to further develop the sensor and

Bioimpedance Spectroscopy for Assessment of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema: A Systematic Review.

Bioimpedance spectroscopy is currently used to evaluate patients with breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). We aimed to describe published studies on the use of bioimpedance spectroscopy for assessment for BCRL. We queried the PubMed, Ovid Medline, and Embase databases to identify studies that evaluated the use of bioimpedance spectroscopy as an assessment tool. We searched for the keywords "bioimpedance" AND ("lymphedema" OR "lymphoedema"). We included English-language studies that reported the use of bioimpedance spectroscopy for assessment of BCRL. Out of 152, 116, and 235 articles ident

Asymmetric contacts on a single SnO₂ nanowire device: an investigation using an equivalent circuit model.

Electrical contacts between the nanomaterial and metal electrodes are of crucial importance both from fundamental and practical points of view. We have systematically compared the influence of contact properties by dc and EIS (Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) techniques at various temperatures and environmental atmospheres (N(2) and 1% O(2)). Electrical behaviors are sensitive to the variation of Schottky barriers, while the activation energy (E(a)) depends on the donor states in the nanowire rather than on the Schottky contact. Equivalent circuits in terms of dc and EIS analyses could

Small Molecule Inhibitor-Modulated Al2O3 Atomic Layer Deposition on Monolayer MoS2 for Controlled Nucleation.

The integration of ultrathin dielectrics on two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors is essential for advancing beyond-Si electronics. However, the intrinsic inertness of van der Waals 2D basal planes remains a primary bottleneck to achieving uniform dielectric nucleation and growth. Here, we introduce a small molecule inhibitor (SMI)-modulated thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) strategy, exemplified by aluminum oxide (Al2O3) ALD on monolayer molybdenum disulfide (1L MoS2) with acetic acid (HAc) SMI. The ABC-type sequence comprises HAc inhibitor (A), trimethylaluminum (TMA) precursor (B), and de

The mechanism of enhancing material insulation performance through homogenizing free volume distribution mediated by a micro-branched structure.

The development of advanced polymer dielectrics for electronic and energy storage devices demands precise nanoscale molecular design. Departing from conventional strategies that merely augment free volume fraction, this study proposes a robust approach to optimize dielectric performance by homogenizing nanoscale free volume distribution via a tailored micro-branched architecture. Maleic anhydride-capped HDI trimer (HM) and TDI trimer (TM) were chemically grafted into a bismaleimide (BMI) resin to construct a micro-branched polymeric network with well-defined nanoscale topology. Synthesis, the Reversible Isostructural Phase Transition, and the Dielectric Properties of a Functional Material Based on an Aminobenzimidazole-Iron Thiocyanate Complex.

By introducing disordered molecules into a crystal structure, the motion of the disordered molecules easily induces the formation of multidimensional frameworks in functional crystal materials, allowing for structural phase transitions and the realization of various dielectric properties within a certain temperature range. Here, we prepared a novel ionic complex [C7H8N3]3[Fe(NCS)6]·H2O (1) between 2-aminobenzimidazole and ferric isothiocyanate from ferric chloride hexahydrate, ammonium thiocyanate, and 2-aminobenzimidazole using the evaporation of the solvent method. The main components, the s

Label-free detection of Babesia bovis infected red blood cells using impedance spectroscopy on a microfabricated flow cytometer.

Impedance spectroscopy is a powerful tool for label-free analysis and characterisation of living cells. In this work, we achieved the detection of Babesia bovis infected red blood cells using impedance spectroscopy on a microfabricated flow cytometer. The cellular modifications caused by the intracellular parasite result in a shift in impedance which can be measured dielectrically. Thus, a rapid cell-by-cell detection with microliter amounts of reagents is possible. Unlike other diagnostic tests, this method does not depend on extensive sample pre-treatment or expensive chemicals and equipment

Ultra-sensitive and specific detection of clenbuterol hydrochloride via Gramian angular field encoding and Conformer-based electrochemical sensing.

Sensitive and specific detection of clenbuterol hydrochloride (CLB) is crucial for ensuring food safety and effective doping control. An electrochemical impedance sensing interface based on polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified magnetic nanoparticles (M-PEG) was developed to enable highly selective enrichment and raw detection of CLB by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. To address the limitations of traditional equivalent circuit models in characterizing complex interfacial behaviors of EIS data, the distribution of relaxation times (DRT) approach was employed to convert frequency-domain im

Cell Membrane Capacitance (Cm) Measured by Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (BIS): A Narrative Review of Its Clinical Relevance and Biomarker Potential.

Cell membrane capacitance (Cm) is a potential biomarker that reflects the structural and functional integrity of cell membranes. It is essential for physiological processes such as signal transduction, ion transport, and cellular homeostasis. In clinical practice, Cm can be determined using bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS), a non-invasive technique for analysing the intrinsic electrical properties of biological tissues across a range of frequencies. Cm may be relevant in various clinical fields, where high capacitance is associated with healthy and intact membranes, while low capacitance indica

Detecting and monitoring incontinence associated dermatitis: Does impedance spectroscopy have a part to play?

In this review, current understanding of the prevention and treatment of Incontinence Associated Dermatitis (IAD) is discussed. The need for preventative measures which target specific faecal/urinary irritants is highlighted, including the role of urease inhibitors. There is no existing internationally and clinically accepted method to diagnose and categorise the severity of IAD. Diagnosis currently relies on visual inspection; non-invasive techniques to assess skin barrier function could remove subjectiveness, particularly in darker skin tones. Impedance spectroscopy is a non-invasive techniq

Computational Modelling for Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy-Based Diagnosis of Oral Potential Malignant Disorders (OPMD).

A multiscale modelling approach has been applied to the simulation of the electrical properties of oral tissue, for the purpose of informing an electrical impedance-based method of oral potential malignant disorder (OPMD) diagnosis. Finite element models of individual cell types, with geometry informed by histological analysis of human oral tissue (normal, hyperplastic and dysplastic), were generated and simulated to obtain electrical parameters. These were then used in a histology-informed tissue scale model, including the electrode geometry of the ZedScan tetrapolar impedance-measurement dev

Characterization of the electrode-tissue interface during long-term deep brain stimulation in the 6-OHDA rat model of Parkinson's disease.

Objective.Deep brain stimulation is an established therapy for neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, but its underlying mechanisms and tissue effects remain incompletely understood. A particular challenge arises from the foreign body response to implanted electrodes, which leads to scar formation and encapsulation, altering the electrical properties of the surrounding tissue. This study aims to characterize the electrode-tissue interface during long-term stimulation and to improve model-based estimation of the stimulation volume using subject-specific dielectric properties.Approa

Thickness-Dependent Relative Dielectric Constant of Organic Ultrathin Films.

In formulas employed for analysis of organic electronic devices, the relative dielectric constant value of the semiconductor organic films is often assumed rather than measured, even though it is a fundamental parameter for a correct interpretation. This is particularly true for ultrathin films made of discrete molecular layers. In this work, Spectroscopy Ellipsometry and Scanning Capacitance Microscopy were used to study thin films made of N,N'-bis(n-octyl)-x:y,dicyanoperylene-3,4 : 9,10-bis(dicarboximide). The relative dielectric constant presents a non-monotonic trend with thickness: it is

Accelerated dielectric relaxation in the isotropic phase of associating liquid crystals dispersed with aerosils.

The dielectric response of liquid crystals in their nematic phase shows an acceleration of the relaxation associated with the rotation around the short molecular axis when dispersed with aerosils. However, in the isotropic phase, this acceleration is only seen for certain liquid crystalline molecules. In this paper, an associating liquid crystal (5CB) and a shorter monotropic liquid crystalline member of the same homologous series (4CB), a liquid crystal that does not show association (5NCS) and a nonassociating liquid crystal (5O5) have been studied by dielectric spectroscopy in the isotropic…

Thermally driven oxidation and conductive-to-insulating transition of liquid-metal-printed gallium films for 2D electronics.

Liquid-metal-derived oxide nanofilms have emerged as promising candidates for scalable electronic materials, yet the oxidation pathway governing their electrical functionality remains poorly understood. Here, we report a systematic study on the thermally driven oxidation behavior of liquid-metal-printed gallium films and its decisive role in inducing a conductive-toinsulating transition for two-dimensional (2D) electronics. Ultrathin gallium-based films were prepared through a dewetting-enabled printing process under ambient conditions, yielding smooth and transferable films with single-layer
