Effects of halothane, enflurane, and isoflurane on measurements of Ca(2+) by calcium electrode and aequorin luminescence.

We assessed the possible effects of the volatile halogenated anesthetics halothane, enflurane, and isoflurane on Ca(2+) electrode measurements and on the Ca(2+) sensitivity of the bioluminescent protein aequorin. In Ca(2+)-EGTA buffers of different pCa values (7. 870, 6.726, 6.033, 4.974, 4.038, and 2.995) and in serial Ca(2+) dilutions (10(-4), 10(-3), and 10(-2) M), halothane, enflurane, and isoflurane each caused a concentration-dependent and reversible increase in the absolute value of the negative electrode potential. Isoflurane and enflurane had larger effects than halothane. Neither of

Comparison of maintenance and recovery characteristics of sevoflurane-nitrous oxide and enflurane-nitrous oxide anaesthesia.

We compared maintenance of anaesthesia and recovery using either sevoflurane or enflurane anaesthesia in ASA I-III patients undergoing surgery with an anticipated minimum duration of 3 h. Serum fluoride concentrations were also measured to assess the potential for renal toxicity. After induction of anaesthesia with thiopentone, patients received, for maintenance, either 1.5% end-tidal sevoflurane (0.73 MAC) with N2O 58% (0.58 MAC) (n = 40) or 1.2% end-tidal enflurane (0.7 MAC) with N2O 57% (0.57 MAC) (n = 40). Other drugs administered during anaesthesia were similar in all groups. Haemodynamic

[Effects of succinylcholine on serum levels of myoglobin and CK in children under halothane or enflurane anesthesia].

We studied the effects of succinylcholine (SCC) on serum levels of myoglobin (Mb) and CK in children under halothane or enflurane anesthesia. Forty-five children, aged 2 years 11 months to 12 years 6 months were subjected to this study. They were divided into four groups; the two groups were injected with SCC 1 mg.kg-1 intravenously to facilitate tracheal intubation and maintained with halothane (Group SH) or with enflurane (Group SE). The other two groups were intubated without the aid of SCC and maintained with halothane (Group H), or with enflurane (Group E). Mb was analyzed by an antibody

[Effects of enflurane on respiratory neurons of the pre-Bötzinger complex in medullary slices of neonatal rats].

Volatile anesthetics depress respiration and neuronal activity of the central nervous system. Recently, a limited region of the ventral medulla (pre-Bötzinger complex; PBC) has been assumed to be the core of respiratory rhythm generation. The transverse brainstem slice preparation containing PBC was used in neonatal rats to investigate the effects of enflurane on respiratory neurons. Enflurane significantly depressed the frequency and the amplitude of spontaneous respiratory bursts in a concentration-dependent manner. In the presence of the GABAA antagonist bicuculline (20 microM) and the glyc

Electrophysiologic effects of enflurane and halothane on isolated rabbit hearts in the presence and absence of metabolic acidosis.

Electrophysiologic effects of halothane and enflurane in the presence of a normal pH and during metabolic acidosis were examined in isolated rabbit hearts perfused at a constant rate. During exposure to a normal pH, both halothane and enflurane produced concentration-dependent suppression of sinus node automaticity and atrioventricular conduction. Intraatrial and intraventricular conduction times during constant pacing were slightly but significantly prolonged by these anesthetics at 2 MAC. The magnitudes of these electrophysiologic changes were similar with halothane and enflurane when compar

One-lung anesthesia--a comparison of pulmonary gas exchange during anesthesia with ketamine or enflurane.

Twenty-four men undergoing elective pulmonary resection with a period of one-lung ventilation were studied to compare the effects of ketamine-O2 and enflurane-O2 anesthesia on arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) and intrapulmonary shunting (Qs/Qt). No statistically significant differences were demonstrated between ketamine and enflurane in mean peak Qs/Qt, 43% and 42%, respectively, or minimum PaO2 values, 169 torr and 127 torr, respectively. Stroke volume index, left ventricular stroke work index, and cardiac index were, however, significantly greater with ketamine. No emergence hallucinations wer

Continuous intravenous infusion of rocuronium (ORG 9426) in patients receiving balanced, enflurane, or isoflurane anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Rocuronium (ORG 9426) is a new nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent with a rapid onset and an intermediate duration of action. This study obtains the infusion requirements of rocuronium in 30 patients in whom anesthesia was maintained with barbiturate-nitrous oxide-opioid, nitrous oxide and enflurane, or nitrous oxide and isoflurane. METHODS: For all 30 patients, anesthesia was induced with intravenous thiopental and fentanyl, followed by 0.45 mg/kg rocuronium. Patients were randomly allocated to receive either: 1) nitrous oxide in 40% oxygen supplemented with fentanyl, th

Volatile anaesthetics and the atmosphere: atmospheric lifetimes and atmospheric effects of halothane, enflurane, isoflurane, desflurane and sevoflurane.

The atmospheric lifetimes of the halogenated anaesthetics halothane, enflurane, isoflurane, desflurane and sevoflurane with respect to reaction with the hydroxyl radical (OH.) and UV photolysis have been determined from observations of OH. reaction kinetics and UV absorption spectra. Rate coefficients for the reaction with OH radicals for all halogenated anaesthetics investigated ranged from 0.44 to 2.7 x 10(-14) cm3 molec-1 s-1. Halothane, enflurane and isoflurane showed distinct UV absorption in the range 200-350 nm. In contrast, no absorption in this wavelength range was detected for desflu

[Changes in intraocular pressure with various concentrations of enflurane during constant conditions of ventilation (author's transl)].

A variety of factors influence intraocular pressure. An increase for example, can be found under conditions of hypoventilation, prohibited ventilation and too light anaesthesia. Some pressure decreasing factors are barbiturates, various inhalation anaesthetics, neuroleptics, and also hyperventilation. In 10 gynaecological patients with normal ophthalmological status, IOP was measured under enflurane anaesthesia by means of a Draeger hand-held applanation tonometer. The neuroleptanaesthesia served as a basis. After anaesthetic conditions were stabilized, concentrations of enflurane ranging from

Influence of 1% enflurane (Ethrane) anesthesia on regional cerebral blood flow repartition under normo-and hyperventilation.

This study is based on the same group of neurosurgical patients as our previous publication. All, except one, had suffered from head injury. We made a first measurement of rCBF under N2O anesthesia, a second under N2O + 1% enflurane anesthesia, both at a PaCO2 of 40 Torr. A third measurement was performed under N2O + 1% enflurane but at a PaCO2 of 30 Torr. The method we used consists of the intracarotid injection of 133Xe and recording of the radioactivity by a gammacamera. Mean arterial pressure was maintained constant by an intravenous phenylephrine drip. For each measurement of each patient

Anesthetic metabolism and renal function in obese and nonobese Fischer 344 rats following enflurane or isoflurane anesthesia.

This study was designed to determine the nephrotoxic potential of prolonged anesthesia with enflurane or isoflurane in obese and nonobese Fischer 344 rats. Weight-paired rats received either a regular chow diet or Potter's high fat diet for 16 weeks. The chow-fed (nonobese) rats gained 20% in body weight compared with 45% for the Potter's-fed (obese) rats. Exposure of nine pairs of rats to 2.0% enflurane for 4 h resulted in significantly elevated peak serum F-levels (62 +/- 11 microM vs. 27 +/- 6 microM; P less than 0.001) in obese compared with nonobese rats and clinical signs of F(-)-induced

Anesthesia for cesarean section V: effects of enflurane anesthesia on the respiratory adaptation of the newborn in elective cesarean section.

The new anesthetic inhalation agent, enflurane, is supposed to allow rapid induction and recovery. Experinece with this agent in obstetrics is limited. Enflurane was therefore studied in 14 pregnant women undergoing elective cesarean section. Its effects upon the respiratory adaptation of the newborn infants were followed during the first 3 hours, as judged by oxygen tensions and acid-base balance measurements in serial neonatal arterial samples. Results were compared with those from a previously studied group of women anesthetized with a barbiturate and nitrous oxide-oxygen. There were no dif
