Enteral feeds can be classified as two major types: commercial enteral formulas and blenderized enteral feeds. When deciding the most appropriate type of feed for a patient, several parameters need to be taken into consideration. Benefits associated with the use of blenderized tube feeds include giving a sense of normalcy to patients, having a positive impact on anthropometric indices, allowing for careful control over known food allergens, being associated with improved gastrointestinal tolerance and improved gut microbial composition (mainly in pediatric populations) and being generally less

Elemental diets have been employed for the management of various diseases for over 50 years, with several mechanisms mediating their beneficial effects. Yet, they are underutilized due to poor palatability, access, cost, and lack of awareness regarding their clinical efficacy. Therefore, in this review, we aimed to systematically search and review the literature to summarize the formulation variability, mechanisms of action, clinical applications, and tolerability of the elemental diets in gastrointestinal diseases. While large prospective trials are lacking, elemental diets appear to exhibit

Eosinophilic esophagitis is characterized by dense mucosal eosinophilia with symptoms of esophageal dysfunction. Because the incidence and prevalence are increasing, understanding the available treatments is imperative. This article highlights evolution and advancements in dietary treatment, supports the notion that food antigens drive this disease, and discusses the advantages, limitations, and future of dietary therapy. Medical and dietary therapies are effective treatments and the optimal approach should be individualized based on patient goals and available local resources. Dietary therapy

Eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE) is a chronic immune-mediated disorder of the oesophagus. The incidence of EoE has been raised substantially and EoE has recently become the most prevalent cause of dysphagia among the adolescents. Food and aeroallergens are believed to play a major role in the pathogenesis. Current treatment includes topical steroids and dietary therapy. Dietary therapy with elimination of causative allergens could provide a durable long-term solution. Dietary therapy in EoE consists of in elemental and empiric elimination diets. Elemental diet with amino acid-based formula is m

INTRODUCTION: Enteral nutrition (EN) is a form of nutrition therapy indicated for patients who cannot eat or do not tolerate oral nutrition. However, because of their nutrient-rich composition, EN formulas provide a favorable environment for microbial growth and present a risk for contamination by pathogens, potentially leading to gastrointestinal disorders and delaying patient recovery. This study analyzed the microbiological safety of two EN feeding systems (the open-system [OS] and the ready-to-hang [RTH] system) using liquid and powdered formulas over different infusion periods.

In the present work the role of nursing in peripheric parenteral nutrition (PPN) is described. The main role is framed within the Unit of Nutritional Support along with the design of the corresponding protocols. The outstanding difference in the composition of our PPN vs those manufactured by the pharmaceutical industry, is the inclusion of glucose as the sole source of carbohydrates. These protocols secure similar nursing care in all patients. With respect to the local venous tolerance to our PPN, it was significantly better than that found in the group infused with a commercial PPN. By contr

BACKGROUND: A sustained-release (SR) formulation of cilostazol was recently developed in Korea and was expected to yield a lower C(max) and a similar AUC to the immediate-release (IR) formulation.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of the present study was to compare the pharmacokinetic profiles of a newly developed SR formulation and an IR formulation of cilostazol after single- and multiple-dose administration and to evaluate the influence of food in healthy Korean subjects. This study was developed as part of a product development project at the request of the Korean regulatory agency.

INTRODUCTION: Medical Nutrition Therapy remains the cornerstone of diabetes management. Clinical evidence shows that early intervention with medical nutrition therapy can significantly improve cardiometabolic markers, thereby delaying or preventing diabetes-related complications. As part of medical nutrition therapy, diabetes-specific formula has proven to be an effective tool in clinical practice and a viable support alternative in special circumstances where consuming whole foods is challenging. However, Taiwan currently lacks consensus on diabetes-specific formula products, and many patient

Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is an exciting therapeutic intervention for the critically ill patient, as well as for the patient with permanent small bowel dysfunction requiring long-term nutrition support. It is a unique and complex modality with associated risks and complications if improperly prescribed or carelessly administered. Nurses must play a vital role in supporting optimal response to parenteral therapy and minimizing complications. This article reviews the following key issues related to TPN therapy that nurses must understand: macronutrient and micronutrient components of TPN,

BACKGROUND: Home enteral nutrition (HEN) is frequently prescribed to individuals who cannot consume adequate food orally. Commercial blenderized enteral formulas (CBEF) containing real-food ingredients are becoming more popular and more widely available; however, the demographics of patients receiving these formulas have rarely been evaluated, and little data are available on patient tolerance in the community.
METHODS: US claims data were obtained for children and adolescents/adults who used the CBEF of interest as the sole source of nutrition via enteral feeding tube in the community settin

The introduction of total nutrient admixtures (TNAs) has offered several clinical advantages. Substituting a portion of the daily dextrose calories with lipids may reduce the incidence of carbohydrate-associated complications (e.g., disturbances in glucose control and immune function). In addition, providing intravenous lipids continuously over 24 hours as a TNA appears to be better utilized by the liver and less likely to interfere with reticuloendothelial system function when compared with conventionally administered, discontinuous lipid infusions. If the peripheral vein is used as a route f

Armyworm feeding in large, destructive groups is hugely difficult to control and the oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata (Walk), is one such pest. In this study, we reported a semisynthetic artificial diet for the oriental armyworm. This diet is based on Ritter's diet, a formula developed for Heliothis zea. The survival of M. separata was extremely low and only around 2% insects can reach the adult stage on Ritter's diet. But, it can reach up to 100% if corn leaf powder (CLP) was mixed, and insects grew faster and gained more mass. After testing a set of mixtures of Ritter's diet and CLP, we

Advances in the understanding of amino acid metabolism and of the interaction of amino acids with skeletal muscle, liver, brain, and other tissues have led to refinements of parenteral amino acid solutions. Clinical situations may dictate the use of specific amino acid formulations. Branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) solutions may normalize aberrant amino acid profiles in patients with hepatic encephalopathy; however, controlled trials demonstrate little effect on clinical outcome, and the effectiveness in patients with acute liver failure or undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation is unprov

Enteral nutrition is a technique that even though it was used in times immemorial, in the last 25 years has suffered a considerable development, from being considered a secondary therapeutic weapon destined only to feed the patient, to occupying an important status that goes beyond the single act of nourishing. The quantitative composition but overall the qualitative one, is object of an interesting argument in which a profile allowing the modulation of certain aspects of the organism response through the supplementation with different nutrients is searched. That includes from the keeping of t

The authors describe the results of studying the dissemination with Bac. cereus cells and staphylococci of raw material, components and ready-made products for infants' and dietetic nutrition after varying times of storage under the conditions of uncontrolled humidity and temperature. It has been demonstrated that Bac. cereus and staphylococcal strains isolated are potentially enterotoxigenic. Prevention of food poisoning with the microorganisms in question should be aimed at the improvement of industrial sanitary and hygienic conditions.

Treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors or N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists provides symptomatic relief but do not prevent its progression. Thus, additional approaches aimed at slowing the progression of the disease have been investigated. Reports detailing reduced brain glucose metabolism in the early stages of AD led to the hypothesis that alternate energy sources aimed at increasing neuronal metabolism may protect neurons and thus benefit patients with AD. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are metabolized to ketone bodies that serve as an a
