Lymphoscintigraphy was performed at 3 and 20 hr following subcutaneous injection of 131I anti-melanoma antibody (Fab) in 11 patients who had surgical resection of lymph nodes (neck, axilla, groin) at 24 hr for suspected metastatic melanoma. We performed lymphoscintigraphy on 31 patients (newborns and children) affected by congenital lymphatic dysplasia according to our previously published protocol. Congenital lymphatic dysplasia may present with various degrees of clinical severity, ranging from nonimmune hydrops fetalis with visceral effusions to lymphedema alone. PURPOSE: A pilot study was undertaken to determine the lymphatic drainage of vulvar cancer using cutaneous lymphoscintigraphy.

BACKGROUND: If cutaneous lymphoscintigraphy (CL) is accurate in predicting the draining lymph node basins at risk from primary axial melanomas, then regional metastases should only occur in those lymph node basins identified by CL.
METHODS: This study is a retrospective review of patients undergoing CL for primary axial melanomas from June 1, 1985, until June 31, 1992. Data retrieved included age, gender, number of basins identified, location of basins identified, management of basins, recurrence in lymphatics, development of distant disease, and long-term follow-up.

Early terms of lymphostasis in lipedema can be detected with lymphoscintigraphy. A normal examination almost certainly excludes a lymphatic component. Indirect lymphography is only used to rule out morphological abnormalities of lymph vessels. If a lymphoscintigraphic study is normal indirect lymphography is not indicated.

Lymphoscintigraphy (LS) has been performed for 8 years in patients of the Sydney Melanoma Unit, to define lymphatic drainage patterns. Over the past 2 years, LS has also been used to locate the sentinel lymph node prior to surgery. Our technique for LS and subsequent sentinel node biopsy has an accuracy of 97%. All sentinel nodes must be marked to ensure the successful application of the sentinel biopsy technique. We have found that the axilla and groin average just over one sentinel node per draining node group for lesions on the trunk and upper limb, but have noted that drainage to the groin

Edema of the lower limbs is a difficult clinical problem. Edema could be due to stasis, obstruction of the lymphatic channels, or increased production of lymph beyond the drainage capacity of the lymphatic vessels. Sometimes it is difficult to differentiate among these varieties. Lymphoscintigraphy was performed in 164 patients complaining of swelling of the lower limbs, 2 women patients with lymphedema of the upper limbs following radical mastectomy, and 5 volunteers. All patients were injected with 1 mCi of 99mTc human serum albumin intradermally in the medial web on the dorsum of each foot.
