PURPOSE: Because successful healing of a tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) depends upon the maintenance of blood supply to the injured area, we assessed the usefulness of narrow band imaging (NBI) video endoscopy to evaluate its vascularization. To our knowledge, the use of NBI to assess tympanic membrane (TM) vascular patterns has never been attempted.
METHODS: Prospective observational study. NBI and cold white light (CWL) flexible videoendoscopy was used to explore perforated TMs of 100 patients. Main outcome measures were visualization of vessels among abnormal TM findings: monomeric ar…

Gastric cancer (GC) is an important health problem despite the advances in surgery and chemotherapy and although the incidence is decreasing, GC is still considered the second most common cause of deceases produced by cancer. Survival rates in gastric cancer are low, mainly because most patients are often diagnosed in late stages. The current interest in the diagnostic of GC is the detection of early gastric cancer. Advances in high-resolution endoscopic techniques such as narrow band imaging (NBI) allow the detection of early precancerous lesions like polyps or metaplastic mucosa. Performing …

BACKGROUND AND AIM: As atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia as a result of Helicobacter pylori are considered risk factors for gastric cancer, it is important to assess their severity. In the West, the operative link for gastritis assessment (OLGA) and operative link for gastric intestinal metaplasia assessment (OLGIM) staging systems based on biopsy have been widely adopted. In Japan, however, narrow-band imaging (NBI)-magnifying endoscopic diagnosis of gastric mucosal inflammation, atrophy, and intestinal metaplasia has been reported to be fairly accurate. Therefore, we investigated

Although numerous gastrointestinal endoscopes pass through the oropharynx and the hypopharynx, it is extremely difficult to detect an early cancer in these sites during routine endoscopic examination. Most patients with cancer in these sites are usually diagnosed in advanced stages. If effective screening methods can detect an earlier stage, such as carcinoma in situ, it would obviously be of great benefit. Narrow band imaging is an innovative optical technology that can clearly visualize the microvascular structure of the organ surface. Herein, we demonstrate that narrow band imaging combined…

OBJECTIVE: Narrow-band imaging (NBI) is considered useful for detecting respiratory papillomatosis. However, the choice between preoperative and intraoperative NBI depends on the facility. We investigated the usefulness of NBI and determined whether preoperative NBI can replace intraoperative NBI with a comparable detection rate.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study conducted at single a tertiary care center, patients with respiratory papillomatosis treated between 2017 and 2022 were enrolled. We systematically compared preoperative white light imaging (WLI) with preoperative and intra

The endoscopic examination of subepithelial vascular patterns within the vocal fold is crucial for clinicians seeking to distinguish between benign lesions and laryngeal cancer. Among innovative techniques, Contact Endoscopy combined with Narrow Band Imaging (CE-NBI) offers real-time visualization of these vascular structures. Despite the advent of CE-NBI, concerns have arisen regarding the subjective interpretation of its images. As a result, several computer-based solutions have been developed to address this issue. This study introduces the CE-NBI data set, the first publicly accessible dat…

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) is the precursor of anal squamous carcinoma, frequently underappreciated by most gastroenterologists. Purpose of the study is to assess the diagnostic accuracy of narrow-band imaging (NBI) in predicting the histology of anal lesions, considering a new NBI classification.
METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of consecutive patients with suspected anal squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs) and superficially invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SISCCA) who underwent anorectal-sigmoidoscopy. Three expert endoscopists reviewed all the im

The development of image-enhanced endoscopy has dramatically improved the qualitative and quantitative diagnosis of gastrointestinal tumors. In particular, narrow band imaging (NBI) has been widely accepted by endoscopists around the world in their daily practice. In 2009, Yao et al. proposed vessel plus surface (VS) classification, a diagnostic algorithm for early gastric cancer using magnifying endoscopy with NBI (ME-NBI), and in 2016, Muto et al. proposed a magnifying endoscopy simple diagnostic algorithm for early gastric cancer (MESDA-G) based on VS classification. In addition, the useful…

BACKGROUND: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a prevalent disease in the ENT outpatient department. Methods of LPR diagnosis differ much. Narrow-band imaging (NBI) and Salivary pepsin-level measurements have been considered as totally new ways for the diagnosis of LPR in recent years.
AIM: We aimed to identify the specific manifestation of LPR and assess the correlation between NBI views and pepsin levels in LPR diagnosing.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 130 Patients enrolled in our study were divided into LPR group and non-LPR group according to the scores of RSI and RFS. All individuals received e

INTRODUCTION: One of the most recent methods used in imaging of the larynx is narrow band imaging (NBI). NBI enables us to detect specific patterns of pathological angiogenesis suggestive of premalignant or neoplastic lesions. The aim of the study was to compare imaging of laryngeal lesions in white light endoscopy (WLE) and NBI in relation to histopathological examination.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 333 patients with laryngeal lesions underwent endoscopic evaluation in WLE and NBI. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value (PPV, NPV) for WLE and NBI were calculated. The dia…

OBJECTIVES: The oral carcinoma is a widespread pathology and still presents poor prognosis. Among the available procedures for its early detection, Narrow Band Imaging technique allows to assess potential vascular network abnormalities. The reliability of this technique in the detection of dysplastic and neoplastic oral lesions was evaluated in a preclinical and clinical study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the preclinical study, a chemical oral carcinogen was administered to 50 mice to induct both dysplastic and neoplastic oral lesions. In the clinical study 91 patients, bearing suspicious prema…

The diagnostic value of narrow band imaging (NBI) in the "optical biopsy" of leukoplakias (LP) and erythroplakias (EP) in different oral cavity (OC) and oropharyngeal (OP) subsites is still to be defined. We evaluated 128 unbiopsied and untreated OC/OP LP and EP by conventional oral examination (COE), white light (WL) endoscopy, and NBI and categorized them as "suspicious" or "innocuous". All lesions were treated by excisional biopsy. True positives were those considered as "suspicious" and with histopathology ranging from mild dysplasia to invasive carcinoma. Epithelia were classified as foll…
