Wrong-Site Surgery in Pediatric Ophthalmology.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of pediatric ophthalmologists who have performed wrong-site surgery, propose risk factors leading to these errors, and assess the effectiveness of the Universal Protocol in preventing them. METHODS: Approximately 1,000 pediatric ophthalmology surgeons were invited to complete an anonymous 10-question survey. Respondents were divided into two groups: those who performed or attempted wrong-site surgery (wrong-site surgery group) and those who had never performed a wrong-site surgery (intended surgical site group). The risk factors (ie, marking procedure, yea

George Critchett (1817-1882) and His Son George Anderson Critchett (1845-1925).

George Critchett (1817-1882) and his son George Anderson Critchett (1845-1925) have influenced the development of ophthalmology and ocular surgery for about a century. They presented new ocular operations such as Critchett's advancement operation, Critchett's corneal staphyloma operation, and Critchett's keratoconus operation, and they invented new surgical instruments such as Critchett's cataract knife, Critchett's scissors, and Critchett's fixation forceps. Both were delicate ocular surgeons managing complex and difficult surgeries.

[Rational development of new strabismus surgical procedures].

With the development of science and technology, more and more new strabismus surgical procedures are introduced in the field of strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology. On one hand, these new surgical procedures improve the effect of strabismus correction and restore or rebuild binocular single vision to some extent. On the other hand, some problems associated with these surgeries have to be faced and resolved. This article review the surgical design mechanism, indications, technology, limitations, potential challenges and ways of resolution, so as to provide reference for clinicians in the pro

Vital dyes in ophthalmology: a chemical perspective.

Vital dyes have advanced diagnosis and surgical technique in various specialties, including oncology, gastroenterology and ophthalmology. Intra-operative and diagnostic dyes are finding uses in all areas of ophthalmology, including cornea, cataract, retina, glaucoma, orbit and conjunctiva. We provide a summary of current knowledge of the chemical concepts of vital dyes in ophthalmology. We review the properties of dyes, techniques of application, indications and complications in ocular surgery. Vital dyes represent an expanding area of research, and novel dyes deserve further investigation.
