Echocardiogram examination of 250 young fighter pilots has revealed that 15 aviators had mitral valve prolapse (MVP) without symptoms of pronounced regurgitation. Their functional indexes of cardiovascular system at rest or dosed physical load at veloergometer tests were normal. Only in 3 pilots were marked rare supraventricular or ventricular extrasystoles during ECG monitoring or veloergometria. Performance capability of all pilots was sufficient. 13 pilots with MVP in examination of their tolerance to +Gz hypergravity at the levels of 6 G or more for 15 s had frequent polytop or group ventr

The aging (presbyopic) pilot has difficulty with near vision which can be a serious problem in the cockpit because of the complexity and uniqueness of his visual tasks. Numerous individual studies have been reported, but the aviation industry and vision care professionals do not have available to them a set of guidelines to permit the optimum fitting of spectacles for civil aviation pilots. In this study the cockpit vision environment was studied in ten contemporary aircraft. Twenty-five pilots of seven of these aircraft types participated in a spectacle design study. Experimental spectacles w

ObjectiveWe sought to identify types of events pilots find most unexpected, strategies they employ to manage them, and recommendations for improving training. In doing so, we aimed to inform the development of more effective training programs, enhance pilot preparedness for unexpected events, and improve aviation safety.BackgroundThe increasing complexity of contemporary flight creates more opportunities for unexpected events. This poses a threat to aviation safety, as these events can cause cognitive overload, stress, and diminished performance. While current training focuses on known anomali

Background/Objectives: The advancing technological developments of recent decades have also changed the stress profile of pilots of high-performance aircraft (HPA) immensely. Pilots are exposed to different gravitational (G)-forces and are only able to fly with anti-G suits that compensate for the physiological loss of cerebral perfusion by applying external pressure to the body, and positive pressure breathing during G [PBG]. The present study therefore aims to investigate long-term effects of PBG on the lung capacity of fighter pilots. Methods: In a retrospective data analysis (1972-2024), t

INTRODUCTION: Pilots are undoubtedly among employees who undergo rigorous medical evaluations to ensure they are fit to fly. However, accidents like the Germanwings Flight 9525 highlight that medically unfit individuals can still end up in the cockpit.
METHODS: This study sought to investigate Greek pilots' attitudes toward medical reporting, given that the available national research is very limited. Semistructured interviews were conducted and analyzed through Thematic Analysis with subjects (N = 18) from general, military, and commercial aviation in Greece during the first quarter of 2024.

The standard flight level for commercial airliners is ∼12 km (40 kft; air pressure: ∼ 200 hPa), the maximum certification altitude of modern airliners may be as high as 43-45 kft. Loss of structural integrity of an airplane may result in sudden depressurization of the cabin potentially leading to hypoxia with loss of consciousness of the pilots. Specialized breathing masks supply the pilots with oxygen. The aim of this study was to experimentally simulate such sudden depressurization to maximum design altitude in a pressure chamber while measuring the arterial and brain oxygenation saturation

To study the possibility of using acupoint electric potential as an index for evaluation of pilot's reaction to vestibular stimulation, electric potential was measured on both sides of left and right Neiguan points and Zusanli points in 80 pilots. Rotation chair was used as the method of stimulation. The results showed that changes of acupoint electric potentials were not significant (P >0.05) during 5 min uniform rotation. While the changes under head motion stimulation were significant (P<0.05 or 0.01) as compared with the pretest values. Relationship between symptoms and the corresponding a

The aim of this study was to assess whether pilots are exposed to any risk of effects on the cardiovascular apparatus, whether chronic exposure to noise can be a risk factor for this occupation, the importance of intensity, length and type of exposure to noise, and if any relationship exists between audiometric deficits and cardiovascular effects. The study comprised 416 pilots subdivided into two groups according to the different levels of chronic exposure to noise, and a group of 150 control subjects not exposed to noise. The results showed: a) a higher prevalence of hypertension, nearly alw

The study of lipids of civil pilots, aged 30-59 years, showed that their average levels of cholesterol and triglycerides were higher than those in a random sample of the male population of Moscow. The average level of HDL cholesterol in pilots was lower than in the sample. The prevalence of dislipoproteinemias in pilots was significantly higher than in the sample. The above lipoprotein changes in pilots versus nonpilots and the prevalence of hyperlipidemias suggest that they are "aterogenic" and produced by the flying profession. These observations also indicate that civil pilots should be reg
