Characterization of fugitive emissions of SLS 3D printing.

This study investigated airborne emissions and potential health risks associated with selective laser sintering (SLS) 3D printing using Nylon-12 powder. Particle size characterization, in vitro cell studies, and analytical techniques were employed to examine particulate exposure during SLS 3D printing processes. Pure Nylon-12 powder, hardened nylon, sintered material, and emitted particles during 3D printing were characterized using microscopy, spectroscopy, and other techniques. Multiple methods were utilized to collect emitted particles for further analysis. Airborne particle concentrations

Application of 3D Printing Technology in Furniture Construction.

In recent years, 3D printing technology has become very important in many fields of science, manufacturing, design, medicine, aviation, sports, etc. Furniture design and manufacturing are also not left out of this trend. In this study, the results of bending moments and stiffness of joints of thin structural elements connected by 3D printing with polylactic acid (PLA) connectors are given. The connectors are newly developed, and information on their strength characteristics is lacking in the literature. Ten joints were investigated, made with 9 and 12 mm plywood and 6 mm MDF. The tested joints

Three-dimensional and four-dimensional printing in otolaryngology.

Each year, thousands of patients deal with ear, nose, and throat disorders that can be life threatening such as tracheal stenosis, or impact the psychosocial well-being, such as microtia. These often require surgical intervention using autologous or allogenic grafts. Tissue engineering represents an exciting alternative to substitute the use of human tissues, by fabricating living bioartificial constructs using three-dimensional scaffolds that incorporate or support human cells that can proliferate and mature. The complex geometries of ear, nose, and throat call for advanced fabrication techni

[3D printing in the field of shoulder surgery].

The 3D printing technology is a relatively new procedure with a high potential, especially in the field of shoulder surgery. The 3D printing procedures are increasingly being developed and also gaining new users. Principally, 3D printing procedures can be applied preoperatively in planning the surgical procedure, patient clarification and in teaching; however, the technology is increasing being used intraoperatively. In addition to intraoperative visualization of the models, 3D printing permits the use of individual and specific instruments and implants. This allows the precise transfer of the

Methods of 3D printing models of pituitary tumors.

BACKGROUND: Pituitary adenomas can give rise to a variety of clinical disorders and surgery is often the primary treatment option. However, preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) does not always reliably identify the site of an adenoma. In this setting molecular (functional) imaging (e.g. 11C-methionine PET/CT) may help with tumor localisation, although interpretation of these 2D images can be challenging. 3D printing of anatomicalal models for other indications has been shown to aid surgical planning and improve patient understanding of the planned procedure. Here, we explore the poten

Novel composite trachea grafts using 3-dimensional printing.

OBJECTIVE: Porcine-derived small intestine submucosa (SIS) extracellular matrix (ECM) surgical patches claim to have greater regenerative properties compared with dermal extracellular matrices. We hypothesized that using SIS-ECM in a bioengineered composite tracheal graft would allow better incorporation into the native tissue. METHODS: Two types of size-matched polycaprolactone support scaffolds were designed: rigid and flexible. The SIS-ECM was wrapped around the polycaprolactone supports lining the inside and outside of the graft. The grafts were implanted in 4 Yorkshire pigs, replacing an

Direct 3D printing of graphene using capillary suspensions.

Conventional 3D printing of graphene requires either a complex formulation of the ink with large quantities of polymers or essential post-processing steps such as freeze drying to allow printability. Here we present a graphene capillary suspension (GCS) containing 16.67 wt% graphene nanoparticles in aqueous suspension with 3.97 wt% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a stabiliser and a small quantity of the immiscible liquid octanol. This is shown to have the appropriate rheological properties for 3D printing, which is demonstrated through the fabrication of a simple lattice structure by direct w

Ear Reconstruction Simulation: From Handcrafting to 3D Printing.

Microtia is a congenital malformation affecting one in 5000 individuals and is characterized by physical deformity or absence of the outer ear. Nowadays, surgical reconstruction with autologous tissue is the most common clinical practice. The procedure requires a high level of manual and artistic techniques of a surgeon in carving and sculpting of harvested costal cartilage of the patient to recreate an auricular framework to insert within a skin pocket obtained at the malformed ear region. The aesthetic outcomes of the surgery are highly dependent on the experience of the surgeon performing t

Antenatal Three-Dimensional Printing of Aberrant Facial Anatomy.

Congenital airway obstruction poses a life-threatening challenge to the newborn. We present the first case of three-dimensional (3D) modeling and 3D printing of complex fetal maxillofacial anatomy after prenatal ultrasound indicated potential upper airway obstruction from a midline mass of the maxilla. Using fetal MRI and patient-specific computer-aided modeling, the craniofacial anatomy of the fetus was manufactured using a 3D printer. This model demonstrated the mass to be isolated to the upper lip and maxilla, suggesting the oral airway to be patent. The decision was made to deliver the inf

Getting in touch--3D printing in forensic imaging.

With the increasing use of medical imaging in forensics, as well as the technological advances in rapid prototyping, we suggest combining these techniques to generate displays of forensic findings. We used computed tomography (CT), CT angiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and surface scanning with photogrammetry in conjunction with segmentation techniques to generate 3D polygon meshes. Based on these data sets, a 3D printer created colored models of the anatomical structures. Using this technique, we could create models of bone fractures, vessels, cardiac infarctions, ruptured organs a

Semen finger print.

A correlation between testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) exists in seminal plasma. These androgens play a role in sperm maturation. The T/DHT ratio is different from one person to the other, due to the heterogenicity of seminal plasma which stems for the most part from the male accessory sex glands, the prostate and seminal vesicles, and also from the 'epididymo-testicular unit'. This ratio is useful in identifying the person's semen. Consequently, the steroid values from assailant semen or accused persons and semen on the victim's clothes are of cardinal importance in matching. Th

3D Printing of Porphyrin-Based Materials: Processes and Applications.

3D printing has transformed academia and industry by providing rapid prototyping, enhanced durability, and customized manufacturing solutions. It creates complex objects in layer by layer (i.e., additive manufacturing) from computer-aided designs (CAD). Although 3D printing has been widely used for producing machine parts, devices, etc., its application in synthetic chemistry and nanomaterials is still in its early stages. Porphyrins are class of naturally occurring macrocycle that play key roles in biological processes such as photosynthesis, oxygen transport, etc. Additionally, synthetic por

4D Printing in Biomedical Implants and Functional Healthcare Devices.

Four-dimensional (4D) printing integrates additive manufacturing with stimuli-responsive materials to fabricate biomedical implants and functional healthcare devices that undergo programmed, time-dependent changes in shape or function. Unlike static 3D-printed constructs, 4D-printed systems can respond to clinically relevant stimuli such as temperature, hydration, pH, light (including near-infrared), magnetic fields, or electrical inputs. These triggers drive defined actuation mechanisms, most commonly thermomechanical shape-memory recovery, swelling-induced morphing, and magnetothermal activa
