Quinacrine sterilization (QS) involves transcervical insertion of quinacrine pellets using a modified Copper TIUD inserter. Pellets are placed at the fundus in the proliferative phase of the menstrual cycle. Efficacy is presently estimated at 1 pregnancy failure per 100 women at 2 years. Early complications are lower for QS than surgical sterilization and this is also true for risk of ectopic pregnancy with newer insertion protocols. This study examined the effects of quinacrine on the functional and electrophysiological responses of isolated guinea pig hearts and isolated canine papillary muscle and Purkinje fibre preparations. Renal toxicity is a serious side effect that hinders the use of cisplatin, a commonly used and effective chemotherapeutic agent. Atrial thrombosis involving the heart of F-344 rats ingesting quinacrine hydrochloride.

Quinacrine hydrochloride is toxic for the heart of F-344 rats. Rats treated with 500 ppm quinacrine hydrochloride in the diet all developed a high incidence of left atrial thrombosis. The lesion was associated with cardiac hypertrophy and dilatation and focal myocardial degeneration. Rats died from cardiac hypertrophy with severe acute and chronic congestion of the lungs, liver, and other organs.
