BACKGROUND: Dense deposit disease and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome are often caused by Complement Factor H (CFH) mutations. This study describes the retinal abnormalities in dense deposit disease and, for the first time, atypical haemolytic uremic syndrome. It also reviews our understanding of drusen pathogenesis and their relevance for glomerular disease.
METHODS: Six individuals with dense deposit disease and one with atypical haemolytic uremic syndrome were studied from 2 to 40 years after presentation. Five had renal transplants. All four who had genetic testing had CFH mutations. I

BACKGROUND: Hard drusen appear as hyperfluorescent dots on indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) due to their high phospholipid content. This study aims to explore the distribution of peripheral hard drusen across age groups and retinal regions, and their correlation with macular pathology including hard drusen, soft drusen, and progression to neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).
METHODS: A hospital-based retrospective study was conducted at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center. Patients who underwent ICGA over a five-year period were included and categorised into seven age groups. Hard

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness among the elderly in developed countries. Subthreshold retinal laser therapy is a new technique that targets drusen - a marker of nonexudative AMD - without causing incidental retinal damage associated with conventional laser photocoagulation. This review summarizes published literature on subthreshold retinal laser therapy as prophylactic treatment of nonexudative AMD.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A literature search of the PubMed, Medline, and Embase databases was conducted from January

SIGNIFICANCE: In intermediate AMD, a simple, clinically feasible vision test of sensitivity to radial deformation is significantly more impaired in eyes with hyperpigmentation than in eyes with large drusen but normal retinal pigmentation, consistent with the former's increased risk of progression to advanced AMD. This ongoing longitudinal study will determine whether this vision measure is predictive of progression to advanced AMD.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine whether simple, clinically feasible psychophysical measures distinguish between two levels of intermediate AMD that differ

Background/Objectives: Different disease subtypes in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) influence treatment burden, yet existing classifications such as the pachychoroid neovasculopathy (PNV)/non-PNV dichotomy may not fully capture clinical heterogeneity. This study aimed to compare the 12-month outcomes of intravitreal aflibercept (IVA) in treatment-naïve patients with unilateral nAMD stratified by the presence or absence of drusen and punctate hyperfluorescence (PH). Methods: This retrospective study included 130 eyes of 130 patients categorized into the Drusen-/PH-, Drusen+

A 49-year-old woman had a few small drusen-like lesions and one larger area of depigmentation in the right fundus. The pin-point lesions corresponded to single enlarged retinal pigment epithelial cells with lipid accumulation and the larger area represented a small, localized retinal pigment epithelial detachment (soft druse). Lipoidal degeneration of individual retinal pigment epithelial cells may be a mechanism of nodular drusen formation. The soft druse was associated with thickening of the basement membrane of the retinal pigment epithelium.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a blinding disorder that compromises central vision, is characterized by the accumulation of extracellular deposits, termed drusen, between the retinal pigmented epithelium and the choroid. Recent studies in this laboratory revealed that vitronectin is a major component of drusen. Because vitronectin is also a constituent of abnormal deposits associated with a variety of diseases, drusen from human donor eyes were examined for compositional similarities with other extracellular disease deposits. Thirty-four antibodies to 29 different proteins or protein

BACKGROUND: Optic nerve head drusen (ONHD) are calcific deposits buried or at the surface of the optic disc. Although ONHD may be associated with progressive visual field defects, the mechanism of drusen-related field loss is poorly understood. Methods for detecting and imaging disc drusen include B-scan ultrasonography, fundus autofluorescence, and optical coherence tomography (OCT). These modalities are useful for drusen detection but are limited by low resolution or poor penetration of deep structures. This review was designed to assess the potential role of new OCT technologies in imaging
