Seed mixes of intermediate grass:forb ratio create vegetation of greater ecosystem service provision in restorations.

Restoring pollination services using forb-dense seed mixes is seen as a possible way to mitigate global pollinator decline. Research is needed on whether this management factor impacts other ecosystem services that could be influenced by greater emphasis on forbs than grasses in seed mixes. We tested grass:forb seeding ratios varying from 0:100 to 100:0 for their effects on multiple ecosystem services in a prairie restoration. We hypothesized that intermediate grass:forb seeding ratios, which have greater plant diversity, would result in greater supporting, regulating, and aesthetic services.

Cysticercosis of slaughter cattle in southeastern Nigeria.

The incidence of cysticercosis due to Taenia saginata in both local and exotic breeds of cattle slaughtered for meat in southeastern Nigeria between November 1999 and April 2002 is reported. The examination of various organs of 25,800 cattle in 10 major abattoirs of this region showed that 6750 (26.2%) were infected with Cysticercus (C.) bovis. The prevalence rates varied from one abattoir to another while the rates of cysticercosis in local and exotic breeds varied significantly (P > 0.05). Sixty percent of all the infected animals had cysts. The tongue, cardiac, and masseter muscles were the

Association between case signalment and disease diagnosis in urinary bladder disease in Australian cats and dogs.

Urinary bladder diseases are common in dogs and cats; however, there is little published work on urinary bladder disease in Australian pets. We identified pathology records of Australian dogs and cats with urinary bladder tissue submitted to the University of Queensland Veterinary Laboratory Service during 1994-2016 (n = 320). We described the proportion of bladder diseases in dogs and cats, and applied the less-commonly used logistic regression procedure to quantify associations between signalment variables and disease diagnosis that were evident using descriptive statistics alone. After prel

The human factor--the weakest link?

The German Animal-Laboratory-Information-System (ALIS) was used to assist the laboratory animal care program. The transmission of disease from man is a hazard to the health of laboratory animals. Mycoplasmas, Escherichia coli, staphylococci and Listeria were considered as hazards to laboratory animals. Special consideration was given to Escherichia coli strains of O groups 7 and 146 and to different lysotypes of Staphylococcus aureus. Important areas where human mistakes can be prevented are discussed. These include distance of animal quarters from processing areas, the diameter of sanitary se

Ascaris suum in pigs of the Zona da Mata, Minas Gerais State, Brazil.

Among the parasites that affect pigs, Ascaris suum stands out for causing the greatest losses to livestock production systems. This parasite can be monitored during the slaughter of animals through the identification of "milk spots" or white patches on the liver caused by its larval migration. However, infection in the herd is usually subclinical, which is why the presence of this parasite in industrial pig production has been overlooked. The aim of the study was therefore to evaluate the occurrence of milk spots on the liver of animals slaughtered in the micro-region of Ponte Nova in the Zona

Participatory assessment of paid vaccination campaigns for village chickens against Newcastle disease in Kongo Central province.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where state-driven animal vaccination campaigns are organized only in response to epidemics, the organization of a permanent animal vaccination service is urgently needed. A non-governmental organization has set up an experimental paid vaccination service for village chickens against Newcastle Disease (ND) in the Kongo Central province. This mixed-method study presents a participatory assessment of this experiment, identifying socio-economic factors that influence the decision of chicken keepers to adopt vaccination. The study was conducted in four te

A Longitudinal Study of Cattle Productivity in Intensive Dairy Farms in Central Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is witnessing an emergence of intensive urban dairy farming. The aims of this study were to capture cattle productivity parameters in selected intensive dairy farms in and around Addis Ababa (Central Ethiopia). The study is a pre-requisite and baseline for further economic analysis of diseases such as bovine tuberculosis (BTB) and to assess some of the current challenges faced by farm owners for optimal animal performances. Hence, a 3-year longitudinal observational study was conducted for the first time in Ethiopia, in 24 dairy farms with intensive husbandry, including a total of 1,7

Kenya: the development of private services and the role of the Kenya Veterinary Association.

Private veterinary practice has existed in Kenya for more than half a century. Between the early 1930s and the mid-1960s, provision of clinical and advisory services almost entirely involved servicing commercial ranches and dairy farms. The Department of Veterinary Services (VSD) was mainly responsible for providing regulatory services in these areas. Until the mid-1960s, public sector veterinary responsibilities were predominantly associated with the prevention of notifiable diseases outside the commercial farming areas. In a major agrarian reform programme initiated in 1954, Kenya initiated

Multi-country investigation of factors influencing breeding decisions by smallholder dairy farmers in sub-Saharan Africa.

Artificial insemination (AI) and selective bull mating are considered as robust methods for dairy cattle breeding. Globally, these methods have been used to enhance productivity and realize rapid genetic gains. However, these technologies have had low adoption rates in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Even though available evidence suggests that this is due to various infrastructural and technical challenges. There is limited information about what drives this low uptake of AI from a farmer's perspective. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to determine and characterize factors that influ

Implementation of genetic evaluation and mating designs for the endangered local pig breed 'Bunte Bentheimer'.

A pedigree including 1538 individuals of the endangered pig breed 'Bunte Bentheimer' and 3008 records of the fertility traits 'number of piglets born alive' (NBA) and 'number of piglets weaned' (NW) were used to i) characterize the population structure, ii) to estimate genetic (co)variance components and estimated breeding values (EBVs) and iii) to use EBVs for the application of the concept of optimal genetic contributions. The average coefficient of inbreeding increased from F = 0.103 to F = 0.121 within the two recent cohorts. Average rate of inbreeding amounted to 1.66%, which resulted in

The role of syndromic knowledge in Ethiopian veterinarians' treatment of cattle.

Veterinarians play a significant role in the treatment and prevention of livestock diseases at the farm level, safeguarding public health and ensuring food safety. In sub-Saharan Africa, access to quality veterinary services is a major challenge for livestock farmers due to the low number of publicly employed veterinarians, underfunding and privatisation of veterinary services. Low investment in veterinary services and infrastructure, including a lack of laboratories for diagnosis, has made veterinarians rely on their experience and knowledge of cattle disease symptoms developed over years of
