Clustering of poor device acceptance and Type D personality is associated with increased distress in Danish cardioverter-defibrillator patients.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial risk factors tend to cluster together within individuals, likely enhancing the risk of adverse health outcomes. We examined (1) the influence of clustering of poor device acceptance and Type D personality on anxiety and depressive symptoms, and (2) the demographic and clinical determinants of patients with clustering, in a large cohort of Danish implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) patients. METHODS: Patients (N = 557; 81.9% male; mean age = 61.9 +/- 14.3 years) implanted with an ICD between 1989 and 2006 were asked to complete a set of standardized and valida

Type-D personality exerts a stable, adverse effect on vital exhaustion in PCI patients treated with paclitaxel-eluting stents.

OBJECTIVE: Vital exhaustion is associated with the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but its prevalence after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stent implantation, as well as the impact of personality on exhaustion, is not known. In PCI patients, we examined (a) the prevalence of exhaustion, (b) the impact of type-D personality on exhaustion over time, and (c) the clinical significance of type-D personality compared with gender and age as predictors of exhaustion. METHODS: Consecutive patients (n=419) with stable or unstable angina treated with PCI with dr

Noncardiac chest pain in the emergency department: the role of cardiac history, anxiety or depression and Type D personality.

BACKGROUND: Noncardiac chest pain is common in patients presenting to emergency departments and is frequently associated with panic disorder. This can represent a major burden for patients and the healthcare system. Little is known about the patient characteristics that increase the risk of noncardiac chest pain. We examined whether cardiac history or Type D personality was associated with panic disorder and/or depression-driven noncardiac chest pain. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients presenting with noncardiac chest pain to the emergency department of the University Hospital Maastricht were scre

Coping strategies and changes in type D personality were associated with depressive tendency at 9 months after percutaneous coronary intervention.

Type D personality, characterized by negative affectivity and social inhibition, has been associated with both the psychophysiology of coronary artery disease (CAD) and depressive disorders. However, few reports have described the impact of coping strategies in these patients. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of type D personality and the coping strategies adopted by patients with CAD and to explore the factors associated with depressive tendencies during follow-up. Among 84 patients with CAD (median age 66.5 years, nine women) who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (P

[Type D personality style and back pain : A narrative overview of the relevance of psychosocial factors in orthopedic pain therapy].

BACKGROUND: The Type D personality ("distressed personality") is characterized by a combination of negative affectivity and social inhibition. While this personality style was originally researched in the context of cardiovascular disease, recent studies also show a significant association with chronic pain disorders, especially back pain. OBJECTIVES: This narrative review examines the current state of knowledge on the relationship between type D personality and back pain. The aim is to analyze possible psychological, behavioral, and biological mechanisms and to derive clinical implications f

A Type A and Type D Combined Personality Typology in Essential Hypertension and Acute Coronary Syndrome Patients: Associations with Demographic, Psychological, Clinical, and Lifestyle Indicators.

Many studies have focused on Type A and Type D personality types in the context of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), but nothing is known about how these personality types combine to create new profiles. The present study aimed to develop a typology of Type A and Type D personality in two groups of patients affected by and at risk for coronary disease. The study involved 711 patients: 51.6% with acute coronary syndrome, 48.4% with essential hypertension (mean age = 56.4 years; SD = 9.7 years; 70.7% men). Cluster analysis was applied. External variables, such as socio-demographic, psychological,

Physician burnout and type D personality relate to pericoronary fat phenotype and role of sympathetic activation: a cross-sectional study.

Biological pathways linking psychosocial stress to coronary pathology remain elusive. Burnout and type D personality (TDP), defined by negative affectivity and social inhibition, are prevalent among physicians and associated with cardiovascular risk. We investigated whether burnout and TDP relate to pericoronary adipose tissue (PCAT) attenuation, a noninvasive imaging marker of fat composition and coronary inflammatory signaling. We further investigated whether sympathetic activation is implicated as an indirect pathway in this association. Systemic inflammation was examined as a downstream co

The mediating role of depression, anxiety, and sleep in the relationship between type D personality and asthma control: a cross-sectional study.

Type D personality, defined by the co-occurrence of negative affectivity and social inhibition, has been associated with poorer health outcomes in chronic diseases, including asthma. However, the psychological mechanisms underlying the relationship between Type D personality and asthma control remain unclear. This cross-sectional study included 150 adult patients with asthma recruited from a tertiary outpatient clinic. Participants completed the Asthma Control Test (ACT), Type D Personality Scale (DS-14), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quali
