Effect of gender on the biodynamic responses to vibration induced by a whole-body vibration training machine.

Whole-body vibration training machines are used by both male and female users. However, studies investigating the biodynamic responses to vibration during training have used either mixed-gender subjects or male subjects. No study has investigated the effect of gender on the biodynamic responses under vibration training conditions. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of gender on the apparent mass and the vibration of the head of standing people during exposure to vibration. A total of 40 subjects (20 females and 20 males) were exposed to vertical vibration at six frequenci…

Comparison of a neurothesiometer and vibration in measuring vibration perception thresholds and relationship to nerve conduction studies.

OBJECTIVE: To compare vibration perception thresholds (VPTs) obtained with two different instruments, a neurothesiometer and a vibratron, and to characterize variability of repeat measures and correlation with sural nerve conduction parameters. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 152 patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy received electrodiagnostic evaluation and quantitative VPT testing with the Vibratron II and the Horwell Neurothesiometer. Of the patients, 42 returned for repeat nerve conduction studies and VPT testing with both types of equipment on three separate occasions. RE…

Rheumatic effects of vibration at work.

Occupational exposures to vibration come in many guises, and they are very common at a population level. It follows that an important minority of working-aged patients seen by medical services will have been exposed to this hazard of employment. Vibration can cause human health effects, which may manifest in the patients that rheumatologists see. In this chapter, we identify the health effects of relevance to them, and review their epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis and vocational and clinical management. On either side of this, we describe the nature …

Vibration on board and health effects.

There is only limited knowledge of the exposure to vibrations of ships' crews and their risk of vibration-induced health effects. Exposure to hand-arm vibrations from the use of vibrating tools at sea does not differ from that in the land-based trades. However, in contrast to most other work places, seafarers are also exposed to vibrations to the feet when standing on vibrating surfaces on board. Anecdotal reports have related the development of "white feet" to local exposure to vibration, e.g. in mining, but this connection has not been investigated in the maritime setting. As known from stud…

Clinical significance of vibration-induced nystagmus.

The aims of the study were to characterize the vibration-induced nystagmus (VIN) in patients with unilateral vestibular neuritis (VN) and Ménière's disease (MD), and to clarify the clinical significance of VIN by comparing it with caloric results in patients with VN and MD. We recorded eye movements from 22 VN patients and 24 MD patients using unilateral 100-Hz vibration on the mastoid bone. Eye movements were analyzed and the maximum value of slow-phase eye velocity was obtained during vibration on each mastoid. The average value of slow-phase velocities was calculated. Spontaneous nystagmus …

Needle tip localization using stylet vibration.

Power Doppler ultrasound is used to localize the tip of a needle by detecting physical vibrations. Two types of vibrations are investigated, lateral and axial. The lateral vibrations are created by rotating a stylet, whose tip is slightly bent, inside a stationary cannula while the stylet is completely within the cannula. The minute deflection at the needle tip when rotated causes tissue motion. The axial vibration is induced by extending and retracting a straight stylet inside a stationary cannula. The stylet's tip makes contact with the tissue and causes it to move. The lateral vibration met…

Vibration exposure, smoking, and vascular dysfunction.

OBJECTIVES: Vibration white finger (VWF), also known as "occupational Raynaud's phenomenon", is marked by arterial hyperresponsiveness and vasoconstriction during cold stimulation. The impact of tobacco use, and by extension stopping smoking, on the long term course of the disease has been inconclusively characterised. The objectives of this study included assessment of the impact of tobacco use on symptoms and on objective tests in shipyard workers exposed to vibration, and in gauging the natural history of the disorder after stopping exposure and changing smoking patterns. METHODS: In a cro…

[Quantitative analysis of vocal fold vibration].

OBJECTIVE: To measure vocal fold vibration quantitatively and study the effects of gender and phonation mode. METHOD: The authors adopted a new computerized image analysis technique and EGG in 60 normal speakers, and the parameters of vocal fold vibration were measured and analyzed according to the loudness, pitch and gender. RESULT: With frequency increasing, CQ got smaller and OQ larger which expressed longer open phase. As intensity increased, the duration of open phase became shorter and the closing phase got relatively much shorter. Males had a longer closed phase than females. The clos…

Low intensity vibration exposure in postmen.

The complaints of white fingers in postmen who had used motorbikes and had been exposed to low intensity vibration were studied. Their vibration exposure was found to be 1-3 m/s2 per day, four hour equivalent value of frequency weighted acceleration. The rate of white fingers among all subjects was 2.8%. The rate was related not only to vibration/cold exposure but also to age and delivery area locations. The major part of the white finger occurrence reported here was considered to be due to primary Raynaud's syndrome, and it seems safe to conclude that, a daily vibration exposure of up to 2.5-…

Hand-arm vibration and terrain vehicles.

Hand-arm vibration was measured on the handlebars of terrain vehicles (N = 36) and a postal inquiry was made among N = 2705 reindeer herders (snowmobile drivers). Since many subjects had also used other vibrating tools the snowmobile group proper (N = 334) was established. In the whole group 19% of the subjects reported having experienced white finger attacks and 48% numbness of the hands. The frequency-weighted acceleration of snowmobile vibration was 3.5 m/s2, and risk evaluation using the ISO 5349 standard predicted the prevalence of white finger well in the snowmobile group proper. The vib…

Vibration-induced changes in vascular tone.

Longitudinal mechanical vibrations in sonic range (10-100 Hz) and of moderate amplitude (50-500) considerably reduce the contractile force of smooth muscle as well as striated muscle. Experiments elucidating the mechanism behind this effect are described. The inhibition of the contractile force is probably due to a direct interference with the action of the contractile proteins. Vibrations are supposed to increase the rate with which the interfilamentary crosslinks are broken. Thereby the number of established crosslinks is reduced and thus the force. Finally a hypothesis concerning the possib…

Hand-arm vibration exposure of dentists.

OBJECTIVES: The use of dental handpieces exposes the dental personnel to high-frequency vibration. Dentists have been shown to have a high frequency of finger-related and other upper limb symptoms and a high prevalence of osteoarthrosis in the distal interphalangeal joints. METHODS: The vibration of 22 dental handpieces was measured during normal work with accelerometer. The weighted vibration according to the standard ISO 5349-1 and the total acceleration of high frequency vibration ("ultravibration") in the frequency range of 1.6-10 kHz were analyzed. In order to compare non-contact vibrati…

Vibration-compensated interferometer for surface metrology.

An advanced interferometer was built for surface metrology in environments with severe vibration. This instrument uses active control to compensate for effects of vibration to allow surface measurement with high-resolution phase-shifting interferometry. A digital signal processor and high-speed phase control from an electro-optic modulator allows phase measurements at 4000 Hz. These measurements are fed back into a real-time servo in the digital signal processor that provides a vibration-corrected phase ramp for the surface measurements taken at video rates. Unlike fringe locking, which compen…

Neoglottic vibration in tracheoesophageal shunt phonation.

The purpose of the present study was to examine vibratory patterns of the neoglottis and to ascertain the neoglottic conditions that could cause failure in tracheoesophageal shunt phonation. We studied 30 tracheoesophageal shunt speakers while using "trap-door" type voice prostheses. Videostroboscopy was undertaken to investigate vibratory patterns of the neoglottis during phonation of the sustained vowel sound /e/ in these patients. The voice qualities of the patients were judged perceptually. A regular neoglottic vibration was observed in 21 patients. Nine patients had irregular neoglottic v…
