Guidelines for automated preschool vision screening: a 10-year, evidence-based update.

In 2003 the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Vision Screening Committee proposed criteria for automated preschool vision screening. Recent literature from epidemiologic and natural history studies, randomized controlled trials of amblyopia treatment, and field studies of screening technologies have been reviewed for the purpose of updating these criteria. The prevalence of amblyopia risk factors (ARF) is greater than previously suspected; many young children with low-magnitude ARFs do not develop amblyopia, and those who do often respond to spectacles alone. High…

A Review of Childhood Vision Screening Laws and Programs Across the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Many organizations recommend childhood vision screenings. Furthermore, 42 out of 50 states in the U.S. have laws requiring these examinations looking for multiple ocular abnormalities that can lead to amblyopia, which has the potential to result in lifelong visual impairment. Currently, South Dakota is not a state with similar aforementioned law. The purpose of this research was to examine vision screening laws and programs across America to potentially provide a framework from which South Dakota could adopt its own law. METHODS: This is a healthcare policy review of childhood v…

[A simplified screening test for the identification of individuals with diminished vision in developing countries].

Simple but effective tests have been produced for screening subjects with low vision in developing countries. These tests of distance and near vision, based on the E test, were evaluated and validated in trials with people aged 4-90 years, and have been field tested in the health, education and rehabilitation services in 32 developing countries. Their sensitivity and specificity as screening tools for low vision have been calculated: sensitivity of 85% and specificity of 96% for the distance vision test, and sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 84% for the near vision test. The content and f

Vision screening outcomes of 4-5 year-olds reflect the social gradient.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Children in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities often do not access follow-up eye care services when referred from vision screenings; whether this is due to lack of availability is not known. This paper highlights the need for vision and eye care for vulnerable children with practicing clinical optometrists well placed to provide vision care. BACKGROUND: Vision impairments develop from a young age and may inhibit learning experiences and impact life outcomes. Vision screening to detect and refer vision abnormalities supports children in their education and prevents…

Outcomes of an elementary school-based vision screening program in North Carolina.

School nurses can play a key role in the detection of significant refractive error. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a statewide school nurse vision screening program by evaluating the outcomes of screening among first, third, and fifth graders in 10 schools in North Carolina during the 2009-2010 school year. Of the 2,726 children who were screened, 7.7% (n = 209) were abnormal, of which 89% (n = 186) were placed into a comprehensive database for follow-up. No documentation of any follow-up was available for 35% (n = 65) of these children. Of the 106 with complete eye exam…
