Resistance of small ruminant gastrointestinal parasites to available classes of anthelmintic drugs is a widespread problem. As such, use of these drugs needs to be applied in a judicious manner in order to protect animal health. Herein, a case of drug-resistant gastrointestinal nematodes imported to the Cayman Islands is outlined. In order to explore the potential for similar occurrences within the region, a survey was undertaken in March 2017 to assess the importation requirements for small ruminants to English-speaking Caribbean countries. The survey showed that universal administration of a

Working animals have a crucial socio-economic role to play for many low-income communities. One such example is in Ethiopia where virtually all the draught power for agricultural production derives from working animals. However, despite this, the welfare status of working animals in this country remains poor. Hence, a clear understanding of the major welfare problems faced by working animals is key to helping improve their welfare status and to maximise their economic contribution. This systematic literature review encompasses 28 studies published between 2010-2024, that address the role of wo

Cells from organisms across all kingdoms of life continuously release a diverse repertoire of extracellular vesicles (EVs) into their extracellular environment as an elegant strategy for both, cellular homeostasis and communication with other cells. Through different biogenesis routes within the donor cell, nanosized vesicles are generated either from endomembranes or the plasma membrane, and loaded and decorated with macromolecular cargo in a controlled manner through molecular sorting machineries. Since they can affect a recipient cell in the same tissue, distant organs or even other organis

Echolocating bats produce very diverse vocal signals for echolocation and social communication that span an impressive frequency range of 1 to 120 kHz or 7 octaves. This tremendous vocal range is unparalleled in mammalian sound production and thought to be produced by specialized laryngeal vocal membranes on top of vocal folds. However, their function in vocal production remains untested. By filming vocal membranes in excised bat larynges (Myotis daubentonii) in vitro with ultra-high-speed video (up to 250,000 fps) and using deep learning networks to extract their motion, we provide the first

The marine medaka is emerging as a potential behavioral model organism for ocean studies, namely on marine ecotoxicology. However, not much is known on the behavior of the species and behavioral assays lack standardization. This study assesses the marine medaka as a potential model for chemical communication. We investigated how short exposure to visual and chemical cues mediated the stress response to social isolation with the light/dark preference test (LDPT) and the open field test (OFT). After a 5-day isolation period, and 1 h before testing, isolated fish were randomly assigned to one of

PURPOSE: Anaemia is a global health concern, with iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) causing approximately 50% of cases. Affecting mostly the elderly, pregnant and adult women and children, physiopathology of IDA in relation to the gut microbiome is poorly understood. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyse, in an animal model, the effect of IDA on the gut microbiome along the gastrointestinal tract, as well as to relate intestinal dysbiosis to changes in microbial metabolites such as short chain fatty acids (SCFA).
METHODS: IDA was experimentally induced through an iron deficient die

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a pathogen associated with severe infections in companion animals present in the community, and it is diagnosed in animals admitted to veterinary hospitals. However, reports that describe the circulation of MRSA in animal populations and veterinary settings in Latin America are scarce. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and investigate the molecular epidemiology of MRSA in the environment of the largest veterinary teaching hospital in Costa Rica. Preselected contact surfaces were sampled twice within a 6-

(1) The pros and cons of using feed additives and therapeutic agents may be successfully weighed in the light of carefully considered consumer requirements. (2) The socio-economic interests of the producer and the welfare of the animal will also determine the response of the production apparatus to consumer requirements. (3) Consumption of the current amounts of products of animal origin and maintenance of price and quality will only be feasible in the event of rational large-scale production in which constituents used in nutrition, prophylaxis and therapeutics are highly important factors. Antibiotic residues in soils can lead to serious health risk and ecological hazards. In this study, the effects of penicillin and neomycin, two antibiotics widely used in animal production, were investigated on soil bacterial communities. Changes in the community structure were monitored using three 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) polymerase chain reaction-based approaches, including denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), amplified rDNA restriction analysis (ARDRA), and terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis. The prominent DGGE bands were excised from gels and se

Fermentation is an effective strategy to prolong the shelf life of soybean residue and improve its value as an animal feed resource. To investigate the influence of differing fermentation conditions on the microbial community and metabolite profile of fermented soybean residue, fresh soybean residue was fermented in sealed anaerobic bag using a mixed inoculum comprising Bacillus subtilis, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, Limosilactobacillus reuteri, and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, with varying levels of wheat bran supplementation (0-15%), fermentation temperatures (24-37 °C), and durations (24

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a re-emerging zoonosis of significant socio-economic, animal and public health importance. It is principally a foodborne or occupation-associated infection of humans, whose effective control depends on maximum cooperation of high-risk populations.
OBJECTIVES: The study assessed knowledge, attitudes and practices relating to brucellosis among cattle farmers (communal and commercial), meat handlers (abattoir and butchery workers) and medical professionals (nurses and doctors) in Namibia.
METHODS: Between June 2019 and September 2020, self-administered questionnaires

Q fever is an important zoonotic disease perceived to be an occupational hazard for those working with livestock. Outbreaks involving large numbers of people are uncommon, but the increasing case incidence coupled with changing environmental and industry conditions that promote transmission of Q fever has raised concerns that large and serious outbreaks could become more frequent. The aim of this study was to use expert opinion to better understand how large Q fever outbreaks might occur in an Australian context and to document factors believed to be drivers of disease transmission. OBJECTIVES: Although cases of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) pulmonary disease (NTMPD) are rapidly increasing primarily in individuals over the age of 65, the host factors leading to higher occurrence in immunocompetent older patients remain elusive. This study aims to elucidate host factors leading to higher nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease occurrence in older immunocompetent patients.
METHODS: To address these challenges, we used a rhesus macaque model developed by our laboratory where macaques were infected via intrabronchial inoculation with M. avium subsp. hominissuis (M

The commensal microbes of the gut microbiota make important contributions to host defense against gastrointestinal pathogens, including Vibrio cholerae, the etiologic agent of cholera. As interindividual microbiota variation drives individual differences in infection susceptibility, we examined both host and V. cholerae gene expression during infection of suckling mice transplanted with different model human commensal communities, including an infection-susceptible configuration representing communities damaged by recurrent diarrhea and malnutrition in cholera endemic areas and a representativ

INTRODUCTION: Rabies, a neglected tropical disease, causes about 59,000 annual human fatalities globally, the majority of which result from dog bites. Although rabies is preventable by vaccinating dogs and providing post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to humans, dog vaccination coverage in Uganda remains low at approximately 10% and not all human dog bite cases receive PEP. This study sought to understand barriers to dog bite case management and dog rabies vaccination.
METHODS: This study, conducted between September 2022 and March 2023, involved 10 focus group discussions (FGDs) with dog owners

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a glycoprotein hormone produced by gonadotropes in the anterior pituitary that plays a central role in controlling ovarian folliculogenesis and steroidogenesis in females. Moreover, recent studies strongly suggest that FSH exerts extragonadal actions, particularly regulating bone mass and adiposity. Despite its crucial role, the mechanisms regulating FSH secretion are not completely understood. It is evident that hypothalamic, ovarian, and pituitary factors are involved in the neuroendocrine, paracrine, and autocrine regulation of FSH production. Large ani

A liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrrini (OV), is the major cause of the high incidence of cholangiocarcinoma in North-eastern Thailand. The prevalence of OV infection remains high in various parts of the country, especially in wetland rural areas where a large proportion of the community work in agriculture and continue the traditional practice of eating raw or uncooked cyprinoid fish products. The national control program seems to have had little impact in many of these areas, and it has been difficult to make precise assessments of the overall effectiveness of the program. Therefore there is
