BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: The factors that more accurately predict the detection of colorectal cancers and adenomas at colonoscopy are different. We conducted a prospective multicenter study to evaluate which indications were most closely associated with advanced colorectal neoplasm (CRN), including colorectal cancer, in a group of patients undergoing colonoscopy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The 17 468 patients were enrolled in this study between July 2003 and March 2004, from 11 tertiary medical centers in Korea. They were recruited according to 11 itemized colonoscopic indications. The term "adv

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential application of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) Positron Emission Tomography (PET) for colorectal cancer screening in asymptomatic individuals. The subjects consisted of 3210 physical check-up examinees (1736 men, 1474 women; mean age +/- SD, 53.2 +/- 8 y) with non-specific medical history. In the control group, 12 patients who had gastrointestinal symptoms with biopsy-proved colon carcinoma were recruited. Whole-body FDG PET was performed on all patients. Focal hypermetabolic areas with an intensity equal to or exceeding the level of FDG uptake

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis remains an important public health challenge in Egypt despite decades of control programs. Intestinal involvement is relatively common but usually presents with diffuse mucosal disease, ulcerations, or multiple polyps. A solitary bleeding rectal polyp as the sole manifestation is exceedingly rare and can be mistaken for inflammatory bowel disease or colorectal neoplasia. This report aims to highlight this diagnostic challenge within the Egyptian context.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old Egyptian male from a rural area presented with a 3-month history of intermitten

PURPOSE: UK primary care databases are frequently used in observational studies with cancer outcomes. We aimed to systematically review methods used by such studies to identify and validate incident cancers of the breast, colorectum, and prostate.
METHODS: Medline and Embase (1980-2013) were searched for UK primary care database studies with incident breast, colorectal, or prostate cancer outcomes. Data on the methods used for case ascertainment were extracted and summarised. Questionnaires were sent to corresponding authors to obtain details about case ascertainment.
RESULTS: Eighty-four st

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer and its frequency has been on the constant and significant increase over the past 20 years. Prevention aiming for early precancerous detection, results in huge financial savings in the health care system. METHODOLOGY AND TEST SUBJECTS: Prospective randomized clinical research was conducted on 150 randomly chosen asymptomatic persons over the age of 50, with positive family history. All test subjects were given a Haemoccult test and colonoscopy examination. Primary objective of the research was to detect precancerous symp

OBJECTIVES: Hereditary colorectal cancer (CRC) syndromes, including Lynch syndrome and the adenomatous and hamartomatous polyposis conditions, account for up to 10% of CRC cases. Advances in molecular diagnostics and tumor-based testing have improved identification, yet access to genetic testing and lifelong surveillance remains inconsistent worldwide. This narrative review examines the evolving role of nurses in identifying, managing, and supporting individuals and families affected by hereditary CRC.
METHODS: A narrative synthesis of international literature, clinical guidelines, and exampl

Lynch syndrome (LS) is a common form of inherited cancer susceptibility, which predisposes to colorectal cancer (CRC) along with a wide array of other extracolonic malignancies, including other gastrointestinal cancers, cancers of the gynecologic and genitourinary tracts, and other organ sites. Recent data have provided novel insights into patient-specific factors that can help clinicians understand an individual LS carrier's risk of extracolonic cancers, including sex, specific LS gene, age, family history of cancer, and other factors. This summary seeks to provide an update on extracolonic c

Surgical resection of a colorectal adenocarcinoma remains a cornerstone in its treatment. However, despite proper patient selection and neoadjuvant and/or adjuvant chemotherapy/radiation, up to 30% of patients thought to be cured will develop a postoperative recurrence. Unfortunately, the outcomes in patients who develop a postoperative recurrence are poor and are associated with high morbidity and mortality. The gut microbiome has emerged to play a role in virtually all aspects of human health. In this manuscript, we critically examine the current literature implicating the gut microbiome's r

BACKGROUND: Lynch syndrome (LS) is the most frequent hereditary tumor syndrome and is associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). While gene-specific and age-specific differences are considered in patient surveillance, gender-specific risks in the development of CRC have been reported in many studies but are not consistently documented.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to investigate gender-specific differences in CRC development among LS patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic literature search following PRISMA 2020 guidelines was conducted in the PubMed, Ovid,

The present manuscript aimed to review the historical development and most important contributions regarding Lynch Syndrome since its first description, more than a century ago. In 1895, a reputed pathologist from Michigan University, Dr. Aldred Scott Warthin, got intrigued by the family history of a local seamstress called Pauline Gross. According to her prevision, she would present an early death due to cancer, which actually happened (from the uterus). Historically, her family was designated "Family G", comprising a group recognized as the longest and most detailed cancer genealogy that has

BACKGROUND: Early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) has been increasing in incidence worldwide but its genomic pathogenesis is mostly undetermined. This study aimed to identify robust EOCRC-specific gene expression patterns in non-familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and non-hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer syndrome (HNPCC) EOCRC.
METHOD: We first performed gene expression profiling analysis using RNA sequencing of discovery cohort comprised of 49 EOCRC (age <50) and 50 late-onset colorectal cancer (LOCRC) (age >70) specimens. To obtain robust gene expression data from this analysis, w

We present the case of a patient with Lynch syndrome and metastatic colorectal carcinoma (mCRC). The initial immunohistochemistry (IHC) test for deficient mismatch repair gave a false negative result. However, the same mutation has accurately been detected with IHC in other cancers with microsatellite instability (MSI). This supports the determining role of somatic missense mutations in MMR IHC. MSI-PCR testing confirmed MSI and the patient benefited from nivolumab with a complete metabolic response. We explain the rationale for immunotherapy in mCRC, current testing strategies and discuss fut

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the serum level of interleukin-6 (IL-6) was elevated in patients with hepatic malignancies or correlated with radiologic tumor burden.
SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: High serum levels of IL-6 signify an adverse prognosis in many patients with cancer. IL-6 is a growth factor for bile duct epithelium.
METHODS: Using bioactive and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, serum level of IL-6 was measured in 35 healthy adults and in 60 patients presenting for definitive management of cholangiocarcinoma (CC) (15 patients), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (14), metastatic colorectal

Advances in comprehensive treatment primarily based on drug therapy have significantly improved the prognosis of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) in recent decades. Patients who undergo surgical resection or local treatment after conversion therapy demonstrate relatively better outcomes. Consequently, in clinical practice, an increasing number of mCRC treatments as well as the patients themselves are seeking a state of no evidence of diseases. The management of the primary tumor constitutes an important component of this approach; however, compared to locally advanced disease, mCRC presents

The recently released Expert Consensus on the Management of Primary Tumor in Metastatic Colorectal Cancer (2026 Edition) represents a systematic update and paradigm shift in the management of the primary tumor, developed against the backdrop of significant advances in systemic therapy for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) and the accumulation of high-quality clinical evidence. This consensus breaks from the traditional notion of prophylactic primary tumor resection (PTR) and establishes "systemic therapy first" as the fundamental principle. Based on a multidisciplinary team (MDT) model, it p

Curative intent surgical resection of colorectal metastases to the liver and lungs in eligible patients results in improved disease control and prolonged overall survival with the potential for cure in a subset of patients. Additional ablative and local therapies for use in the liver, lungs, and other body sites have been developed with emerging data on the utility and toxicity of these treatments. Future studies should focus on identification of appropriate candidates for treatment and determining the optimal modality and timing of treatment accounting for both patient and disease factors.
