The source of infection for travelers who develop Legionnaires' disease (LD) shortly after a journey abroad is difficult to ascertain. Infection is likely to have occurred abroad, but could also have occurred at the patient's own residence. The authors conducted a case-control study to determine risk for acquiring LD at home in the Netherlands after traveling abroad. They compared homes of 44 traveling LD patients with 44 homes of nontraveling LD patients, using logistic regression models. Geographic distribution was confounding the association between traveling and presence of Legionella spp.

We studied on the infection of domestic cat and dog fleas with Bartonella henselae by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A total of 62 fleas (36 Ctenocephalidis felis from cats, 24 C. felis from dogs and 2 Ctenocephalidis canis from dogs), stored in 70% ethanol, were analyzed by PCR for B. henselae specific DNA. Oocysts of Cryptosporidium, from the feces of a naturally infected dog and from an HIV-infected human, were identified as the previously reported canine genotype of Cryptosporidium parvum, hereafter referred to as Cryptosporidium canis n. sp. The change of phenotypic traits in domestic animals and crops as a response to selective breeding mimics the much slower evolutionary change in natural populations. Here, we describe that the dominant white phenotype in domestic pigs is caused by two mutations in the KIT gene encoding the mast/stem cell growth factor receptor (MGF), one gene duplication associated with a partially dominant phenotype and a splice mutation in one of the copies leading to the fully dominant allele. The splice mutation is a G to A substitution in the first nucleotide of intron 17 and leads to skipping of exon 17.

A five-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat was presented after three episodes of urethral obstruction and anuria requiring relief urethral catheterisation. A double contrast cystogram revealed the presence of multiple small cystoliths which were radiolucent on plain radiographs. Domestic violence is a serious public health concern in the United States. Despite the serious and often tragically fatal consequences of spousal abuse, we have very little understanding about the root causes of domestic violence. We know even less about providing effective treatments and prevention. In this article, we have discussed some of the more promising individual difference variables that discriminate between violent and nonviolent men.
