BACKGROUND: Equinus deformity is associated with congenital disorders, trauma, infections, burns and neuromuscular diseases. Tip-toe gait resulting from equinus deformity often makes ambulation difficult. Many modalities of treatment are available but most of them are challenging due to high risk of skin and soft tissue complications. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of Ilizarov external fixator with or without minimal soft tissue release in patients with rigid equinus deformity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 30 patients, with 21 (70%) males and 9 (30%) females, were included in

Forefoot fractures are frequently accompanied by severe soft tissue damage. Therefore, treatment should focus not only on fractures but also on soft tissue damage, for which external fixation can be used as a surgical option. A 63-year-old woman presented to the emergency clinic of our hospital with forefoot pain after a motorcycle accident. Comminuted fracture of the proximal part of the metatarsal was diagnosed. Because of the swollen foot and fracture comminution, an operation using the Ilizarov mini external fixator was performed to prevent further damage to the soft tissue. Weight-bearing

Ankle arthrodesis remains an important treatment option for patients with ankle arthritis. Many methods have been described; however, no consensus has been reached regarding the best technique to achieve both successful fusion and a good position for optimal foot mechanics. Furthermore, as arthroplasty has become more popular, preservation of the fibula to allow for future arthroplasty has become critical. The present report describes an innovative technique in which temporary external fixation at operative fixation is used, along with internal fixation, to achieve both an optimal foot positio

Unstable ankle fractures and impacted tibial pilon fractures often benefit from provisional external fixation as a temporizing measure prior to definitive fixation. Benefits of external fixation include improved articular alignment, decreased articular impaction, and soft tissue rest. Uniplanar external fixator placement in the Emergency Department (ED ex-fix) is a reliable and safe technique for achieving ankle reduction and stability while awaiting definitive fixation. This procedure involves placing transverse proximal tibial and calcaneal traction pins and connecting the pins with two exte

Proximal metatarsal osteotomy is the most effective technique for correcting hallux valgus deformities, especially in metatarsus primus varus. However, these surgeries are technically demanding and prone to complications, such as nonunion, implant failure, and unexpected extension of the osteotomy to the tarsometatarsal joint. In a preclinical study, we evaluated the biomechanical properties of the fixator and compared it with compression screws for treating hallux valgus with a proximal metatarsal osteotomy. Of 18 metatarsal composite bone models proximally osteotomized, 9 were fixed with a h

The traditional techniques involving an oblique tunnel or triangular wedge resection to approach a central or mixed-type physeal bar are hindered by poor visualisation of the bar. This may be overcome by a complete transverse osteotomy at the metaphysis near the growth plate or a direct vertical approach to the bar. Ilizarov external fixation using small wires allows firm fixation of the short physis-bearing fragment, and can also correct an associated angular deformity and permit limb lengthening. We accurately approached and successfully excised ten central- or mixed-type bars; six in the di

PURPOSE AND METHODS: External fixation is a safe option for stabilisation of extremity lesions in the polytraumatised patient as well as in fractures with severe soft tissue damage. Nevertheless, long-term-complications are to be expected when external fixation is chosen as a definitive treatment. The purpose of this review article is twofold: primarily, to define the rationale of a procedural change from an external fixator to an intramedullary nail; secondarily, to assess the possible advantages and pitfalls of a single- or two-staged procedure.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: External fixation of

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in external fixation technique and pin design have sought to minimize complications such as pin site infection and premature removal of the external fixator. Although newer forms of internal fixation have gained popularity, external fixation may still have a role in managing pediatric femoral shaft fractures.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We sought to assess the time to healing, limb alignment, and complications observed in a cohort of pediatric patients with closed femoral shaft fractures who were treated with external fixation.
METHODS: Over a 15-year period, one surgeon
