Planning for the Post-COVID Syndrome: How Payers Can Mitigate Long-Term Complications of the Pandemic.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold, payers across the USA have stepped up to alleviate patients' financial burden by waiving cost-sharing for COVID-19 testing and treatment. However, there has been no substantive discussion of potential long-term effects of COVID-19 on patient health or their financial and policy implications. After recovery, patients remain at risk for lung disease, heart disease, frailty, and mental health disorders. There may also be long-term sequelae of adverse events that develop in the course of COVID-19 and its treatment. These complications are likely to pla

Social support, life events, and stress as modifiers of adjustment to bereavement by older adults.

As part of a larger panel study, interviews were obtained from 3 samples of older adults: 45 persons who had recently lost a spouse, 40 who had lost a parent or child, and 45 who were not bereaved. Assessments were conducted before and after the deaths. In the widowed sample, health remained quite stable, but depression increased sharply, then remained elevated. Changes were minimal in the sample who had lost a parent or child and in the nonbereaved sample. Multiple regression procedures were used to identify factors that contribute to depression and health 9 months after the spouse's death. P

Elder abuse and neglect. Council on Scientific Affairs.

Estimates of elder abuse approximate 10% of Americans over 65 years of age; obtaining accurate incidence and prevalence figures is complicated by factors including denial by both the victim and perpetrator and minimization of complaints by health professionals. Broad agreement exists in categorizing elder abuse as physical, psychological, and financial and/or material, despite lack of uniformity in definitions. Systematic scientific investigation provides limited knowledge about the causes of elder abuse. Most experts, however, believe that family problems and conflict are a major precipitatin

Should Injectable Meloxicam Be Approved for Use in Cats?

Injectable meloxicam remains widely used in feline practice despite its association with acute kidney injury (AKI). Evidence of this association was apparent in the results of a clinical trial submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as part of a New Animal Drug Application (NADA) Freedom of Information Summary. These data, however, were omitted from the published version of that clinical trial in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA). The study's financial sponsorship by the drug manufacturer raises ethical concerns, especially given meloxicam's ongoing

Building sustainable TB care systems: managing incentives in private sector engagement.

Private sector engagement (PSE) plays a vital role in enhancing TB care. Global Fund-supported PSE activities contributed to improved TB notifications and treatment outcomes, especially where non-financial incentives were complemented by financial incentives, delivered directly or via social health insurance. Transitioning such activities to government-led health systems is essential for long-term sustainability and to end TB. Well-designed incentive strategies could ensure quality care where patients seek services. However, payment delays, administrative burdens, and donor dependency threaten

From Participant to Passenger: Workers' Experiences of Recovery During a Workers' Compensation Claim.

BACKGROUND: Social insurance systems provide essential financial support to cover living expenses and medical treatment needs during times of work incapacity. However, many ill and injured workers experience the administrative processes involved in accessing these systems as difficult to navigate, which can stifle recovery and slow return to work. The present study centres workers' lived experiences to better understand facilitators and barriers to recovery, and to identify solutions grounded in workers' perspectives. METHODS: Twenty Australian workers with work-related injuries, health, and …

Caregivers of children undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) face substantial psychological, social, and logistical challenges throughout the transplant journey. This multicenter, longitudinal qualitative study explored the evolving mental health experiences, stressors, and coping strategies of 49 caregivers interviewed across four key time points: transplant (d 0), d +30, d +100, and d +180. Protecting Financial Access to Health Care for Adolescents and Young Adults: Position Paper of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine.

Access to health care is a human right and is critical for promoting and maintaining the well-being and health of adolescents and young adults (AYAs). Health insurance or other financial support for low-income and otherwise vulnerable AYAs enables them to exercise this human right and access the health care that is essential for advancing their health and well-being. In addition, health professionals and systems require public insurance to offer care to all AYAs. For health professionals and facilities that care for large portions of low-income AYAs, cuts to publicly funded insurance could thr…

Retrospective Assessment of Preparedness for Mosquito Control Post-Hurricane Florence in North Carolina.

OBJECTIVES: Ideally, mosquito control programs (MCPs) use surveillance to target control measures to potentially dangerous mosquito populations. In North Carolina (NC), where there is limited financial support for mosquito control, communities may suffer from mosquito-related issues post-hurricane due to lack of existing MCPs. Here, study objectives were to (1) investigate the emergency response of a subset of NC counties post-Hurricane Florence and (2) develop guidelines and policy recommendations to assist MCPs in post-hurricane mosquito control response. METHODS: A survey was administered …

External support programs to improve rural drinking water service sustainability: A systematic review.

Achieving sufficient, safe, continuously-available drinking water services in rural areas is a challenge, in high- and especially low-and middle-income countries. External support programs (ESPs) - which may include administrative, financial, and technical assistance - have been hypothesized to contribute to sustainable rural water services. While there are many descriptions of ESPs, a standard terminology and typology of ESP activities does not exist and the effect of ESP activities on system sustainability remains inadequately characterized. We conducted a systematic review of ESPs for rural

Community support systems for farmers who live with disability.

To return to farming following the onset of a disabling injury or health condition is predicated on a supportive environment for the farm owner-operator. The purpose of this study was to examine barriers and facilitators of returning to work after an injury or acquired disability, and to identify community supports (formal and informal) needed and available to farmers. This was a qualitative study using a participatory action research approach that involved a research team, an advisory group of seven stakeholder participants and semistructured interviews with farmers, their spouses, and servic
