[Comparative studies on activities of antimicrobial agents against causative organisms isolated from patients with urinary tract infections (1995). I. Susceptibility distribution].

The frequencies of isolation and susceptibilities to antimicrobial agents were investigated on 704 bacterial strains isolated from patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs) in 11 hospitals during the period of June 1995 to May 1996. Of the above bacterial isolates, Gram-positive bacteria accounted for 29.8% and a majority of them were Enterococcus faecalis. Gram-negative bacteria accounted for 70.2% and most of them were Escherichia coli. Susceptibilities of several isolated bacteria to antimicrobial agents were as followed; 1. Enterococcus faecalis Ampicillin (ABPC) and imipenem (IPM) sho…

Trends in bacterial resistance to fluoroquinolones.

The emergence of resistance to fluoroquinolones in virtually all species of bacteria was recognized soon after the introduction of these compounds for clinical use more than 10 years ago. Various resistance mechanisms, often interdependent, may explain different levels of resistance. Epidemiological factors, local antibiotic policies, patients' characteristics, origin of the strains, and geographic location are among the factors contributing to highly variable resistance rates. During the last several years, resistance to fluoroquinolones has remained very high among methicillin-resistant Stap

[Prevention using pefloxacin of infections in cancer patients with granulocytopenia].

The practical procedures of digestive tract decontamination and prophylaxis of bacterial infection in granulocytopenic patients are debated. Fluoroquinolones are active against Gram-negative bacilli and have few side-effects. Pefloxacin was administered prophylactically to patients with cancer and granulocytopenia. None of them developed Gram-negative septicaemia, but 2 cases of streptococcal septicaemia were observed. The drug was well tolerated by all patients except one. Studies are currently in progress to try to reduce the incidence of septicaemia caused by Gram-positive cocci, using pefl

A review of chemoprophylaxis and therapy of bacterial infections in neutropenic patients.

Gram-negative infections in neutropenic patients frequently originate from the intestinal flora. Attempts to decrease the incidence of these infections include several regimens for gastrointestinal decontamination, some of which have proved to be clinically useful. The orally administered nonabsorbable antibiotics such as aminoglycosides and polymyxins can decrease the incidence of Gram-negative sepsis during neutropenia. However, tolerance of these agents, with the possible exception of netilmicin, is very poor, and patient compliance is low. Cotrimoxazole (trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole) has

Antibacterial effect of four phenothiazines.

Various types of phenothiazines were examined for antibacterial effect on 61 Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains in vitro. The investigated phenothiazines were two neuroleptic drugs, fluphenazine and chlorpromazine, and two antihistaminic drugs, alimemazine and promethazine. All four drugs have antibacterial effects in vitro, the phenothiazines being more potent against the Gram-positive microorganisms. The antibacterial potency of the drugs was measured as IC50: Fluphenazine 29 microM (15 micrograms/ml), alimemzaine 49 microM (37 micrograms/ml), promethazine 88 microM (28 microg

Current state and tendencies of antibiotic resistance in Hungary.

This survey is based on data for 245 903 isolates reported by Public Health Network laboratories in 1983. Facultatively pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria comprised two-third of the isolates, and--except Escherichia coli--were resistant in a high percent to the most frequently used antibiotics. Oxacillin and vancomycin were the most effective against Staphylococcus aureus being in 94.7% resistant to penicillin. In contrast to other streptococci, all Streptococcus pyogenes strains were sensitive to penicillin. The majority of the Gram-positive strains were resistant to tetracycline. A comparison

The epidemiology of central venous catheter-related bloodstream infection in our renal units is changing.

Recent reports have shown an increase in the rate of Gram-negative bacteremia in several settings, including catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI). To analyze if the epidemiology of CRBSI is also changing in hemodialysis patients, we revisited the etiology of CRBSIs in our renal unit over 8 years. During the observed periods, 149 episodes of CRBSIs were reported and the CRBSI incidence rate, ranged between 0.67 and 0.82 episodes/1000 tCVC days. Of these 149 episodes, 84 (56.3%) were due to Gram-positive bacteria, 62 (41.6%) to Gram-negative bacteria, and 3 (2.1%) to polymicrobial flo…

Prevalence of Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria in Healthcare-Associated Bloodstream Infections at Hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Bloodstream infection (BSI) prevalence in hospitalized patients has increased owing to the spread of antibiotic-resistant pathogens; moreover, antimicrobial resistance in bacteria is a global problem. Here, BSIs are investigated in several patients at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, and the resistance of bacterial isolates to widely used drugs is determined. Throughout 2020, bacteria isolated from patients were identified and subjected to antibiotic susceptibility testing. In total, 1125 bacterial isolates were obtained from 1039 patients; among them, gram-positive bacteria were significantly more…

Precision medicine in practice: unravelling the prevalence and antibiograms of urine cultures for informed decision making in federal tertiary care- a guide to empirical antibiotics therapy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Urinary tract infections (UTIs), one of the most prevalent bacterial infections, are facing limited treatment options due to escalating concern of antibiotic resistance. Urine cultures significantly help in identification of etiological agents responsible for these infections. Assessment of antibiotic susceptibility patterns of these bacteria aids in tackling the emerging concern of antibiotic resistance and establishment of empirical therapy guidelines. Our aim was to determine various agents responsible for urinary tract infections and to assess their antibiotic su

Phytosynthesis of CuONPs via Laurus nobilis: Determination of antioxidant content, antibacterial activity, and dye decolorization potential.

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) were phytosynthesized by Laurus nobilis leaf extract, which was used as a reducing and capping agent. UV-vis spectroscopy was applied, and the spectrum of CuONPs gave a peak around 300 and 325 nm. An intense Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy between 4000 and 500 cm-1 wavelengths exhibited exterior functional groups of CuONPs. The results of scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the green synthesized CuONPs were spherical in shape with sizes between 90 and 250 nm. Antibacterial activity of CuONPs was evaluated a
