Congenital hypotrichosis may be due to a number of causes and may have multiple systemic associations. A child born of second-degree consanguineous marriage was found to have monilethrix as the cause of congenital hypotrichosis. A detailed systemic evaluation in the child revealed atrial septal defect and a hypoplastic right thumb leading to a diagnosis of coexisting Holt-Oram syndrome.

This study suggests that cervical incompetence in Igbo women is prevalent among the literate and higher socioeconomic group, that it occurs at an earlier age when compared with published series, possibly reflecting earlier marriage and childbearing, and that the damage occurs mostly during the first or second delivery.

We describe the ocular abnormalities seen in a new metabolic disease which is deficient in the transport of tryptophan. Besides the symptoms and signs reported previously, we have found microconea, hypoplasia of the optic disc and abnormal eye movements in our case--a ten-year-old-boy. The sibling involvement and consaguineous marriage of the parents suggest a recessive heredity.

Developmental differences in reactions to parental divorce have not been examined beyond adolescence, and the impact of divorce on older offspring has thus been minimized. Central themes that emerged from an exploratory study of 18-to-23-year-olds suggest that the break-up of their parents' marriage represents a critical event deserving of further attention from researchers and clinicians.

An Ashkenazi Jewish woman had a child with Niemann-Pick disease in her first marriage. She subsequently remarried a man who was also heterozygous for the condition and conceived twins. Prenatal diagnostic tests were performed and one twin was shown to be homozygous and the other heterozygous for Niemann-Pick disease. The problems of prenatal diagnosis and counselling in twin pregnancies are discussed.

The present paper describes a case with clinical and radiological characteristics of Apert's syndrome. He was the first offspring from second cousins marriage.
