OBJECTIVES: The effect of metal precrown restoration of distal proximal maxillofacial caries in the first deciduous molar on the composite resin filling of mesio-adjacent maxillofacial caries in the second deciduous molar was investigated.
METHODS: A total of 80 children aged 4-8 who visited our clinic were selected, and 120 teeth were examined. Two consecutive deciduous molars in one jaw were considered a single case when the distal proximal maxillary surface of the first deciduous molar and the mesial proximal maxillary surface of the second deciduous molar simultaneously had caries. The te…

American journal of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics : official publication of the American Association of Orthodontists, its constituent societies, and the American Board of Orthodontics2001eng
Functional occlusion and periodontal health were investigated after orthodontic treatment that involved extraction of second molars and after eruption of the third molars in 37 patients (25 female, 12 male). The mean age was 21 years 9 months (range, 16 years 1 month-30 years 5 months). The third permanent molars invariably erupted into a position that maintained good functional occlusion. Sixty-three percent of patients had canine guidance in lateral excursion; the remainder of patients had satisfactory group function. There were only 2 non-working side interferences in the sample, 1 from a r…

Background: Class II is considered one of the most common malocclusions, influencing 37% of schoolchildren in Europe and 33% of orthodontic patients in the United States. When this type of malocclusion is combined with increased overjet with proclined teeth and maxillary excess, then moving maxillary molars distally is suggested. According to the recent literature, modern appliances that lack patient cooperation can be combined with temporary anchorage devices to provide absolute and skeletal anchorage while supporting the non-compliance appliances to eliminate their side effects, such as ante…

This case report describes the successful orthodontic management of a 25-year-old female patient presenting with Class II Division 2 malocclusion, moderate maxillary anterior crowding, and a missing mandibular left first molar. Treatment plan involved extraction of two maxillary first premolars to address crowding and protraction of two mandibular left molars, combined with the strategic use of mini-implants for precise tooth movement control. Ridge-split surgery was adopted to manage alveolar ridge resorption in the edentulous area. This procedure was essential for widening the narrow alveola…

The permanent first molar (PFM) plays an essential role in maintaining the dental and overall health of an individual. It is the most susceptible tooth to dental caries due to its early eruption and location near the primary second molar in the oral cavity. We assessed the clinical status of the PFM and its association with carious primary second molars among 6-11-year-old children in Sunsari, Nepal, from January 2019 to December 2021. We recorded DMFT/DMFS and dft/dfs indices of the first permanent molar and secondary primary molar. Chi-square, logistic regression, and Spearman rank correlati…

BACKGROUND: An orthodontic traction technique with a miniscrew-anchored cantilever spring was used for the traction of a deeply impacted maxillary third molar to substitute its adjacent second molar with severe root resorption.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 30-year-old woman sought multidisciplinary treatment planning for a second molar with severe root resorption caused by a deeply impacted third molar. Panoramic radiographs and cone-beam computed tomographic images showed that the third molar was located on the apical and palatal side of the second molar and that the second molar had severe root reso…

Autotransplantation of molars is a valuable treatment option for tooth replacement in adolescents. In a retrospective analysis of 13 young patients, 17 molars were transplanted, with an average follow-up of 16 months. Root formation was 60-90% at the time of transplantation, and the apex was not yet fully formed. Primarily, (3rd) maxillary molars were transplanted into the mandible. All transplanted molars integrated physiologically, without ankylosis or need for endodontic treatment. One case of limited, non-progressive resorption was observed. None of the teeth showed deepened pockets or per…

BACKGROUND: This study reports an economic evaluation from the perspective of the Brazilian healthcare system. This is a secondary outcome of a three-year randomised controlled trial that compared Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) to the Hall Technique (HT) for managing occluso-proximal caries lesions in primary molars. The primary outcome showed that the HT had a higher survival rate compared to ART and the economic evaluation was to test cost-effectiveness.
METHODS: Children (5-10 years old) in public schools of Tietê-SP/Brazil, were randomly allocated to either the ART or HT arm. Trea…

The evaluation of third molar teeth involves careful consideration of the presence, positioning within the jaws, and the adjacent structures. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons strongly endorses the surgical management of both the erupted and impacted third molars, even in asymptomatic cases, particularly when there is a present or reasonable potential for related pathology. The decision to retain or extract third molars should be approached with careful consideration, taking into account the patient's overall health. Clinical guidelines and public health policies shou…

This case report describes a simple alternative for treatment of mesioangulation of mandibular second molars. An 11-year-old girl was diagnosed with unilateral posterior crossbite, moderate incisor crowding and mesioangulation of the right mandibular second molar. The ectopic second molar was uprighted using a modified lingual arch with a distal hook and elastic chains. Orthodontic traction began after appliance installation and was activated once per month using 120 g of force. After six months, the right mandibular second molar was in an upright position. Orthodontic treatment continued with…

Failure of eruption of a permanent first molar is a relatively infrequent clinical condition that affects the normal development of dentition and may cause malocclusion. There are two conditions that might result in failure of eruption: (1) mechanical failure (ankylosis) and (2) primary failure of eruption, with different clinical features and therapeutic approaches for each. It is often challenging for orthodontists and pediatric dentists to establish differential diagnoses of these conditions to ensure a successful treatment outcome. The purpose of this case report is to discuss the diagnosi…
