Lignin-Based Direct Ink Printed Structural Scaffolds.

3D printing of lignocellulosic biomass (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) has attracted increasing attention by using this abundant, sustainable, and ecofriendly material. While cellulose can be easily tailored into a highly viscous ink for 3D printing, after solvent evaporation, the final printed structures become highly porous, fragile, and easily fall apart in water due to its hydrophilic nature. Lignin, another crucial component of natural lignocellulose, has not yet been reported for ink printing due to its unfavorable rheological behavior. Herein, a low-cost direct ink printing strat

Nerves of Steel: a Low-Cost Method for 3D Printing the Cranial Nerves.

Steady-state free precession (SSFP) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can demonstrate details down to the cranial nerve (CN) level. High-resolution three-dimensional (3D) visualization can now quickly be performed at the workstation. However, we are still limited by visualization on flat screens. The emerging technologies in rapid prototyping or 3D printing overcome this limitation. It comprises a variety of automated manufacturing techniques, which use virtual 3D data sets to fabricate solid forms in a layer-by-layer technique. The complex neuroanatomy of the CNs may be better understood and d

Dynamic Ionic Double-Network Hydrogels of Agricultural Lignin/Zwitterionic Starch via 3D Printing for a Rapid-Rebound and Real-Time Feedback Flexible Sensor.

Agricultural biomass hydrogels are environmentally friendly candidates for flexible sensors, yet their application in advanced AI devices is restricted by persistent trade-offs among mechanical strength, tensile performance, and sensitivity. Lignin can strengthen hydrogels benefiting flexible sensing, but its steric hindrance lowers photocuring cross-linking density, triggering mechanical hysteresis and slow rebound under dynamic deformation, which deteriorates sensing signal reliability. Herein, we develop a vat photopolymerization (VPP) 3D-printed double-network elastomer. Modified lignosulf

A 3D printable device for non-invasive longitudinal neuroimaging in adult zebrafish.

Zebrafish are a powerful model for imaging studies of development and neurobiology. However, most studies have focused on developing zebrafish because of the technical and biological challenges of imaging adult stages. These include increased tissue opacity and illumination depth limitations, and difficulty maintaining life support and anesthesia in a 2-4 cm-long fish. There are currently limited tools for intravital imaging of the adult zebrafish brain. The ability to image the brain in the same individual repeatedly without physical damage would facilitate the use of zebrafish to study aging

Irreversible Bilayer Thermochromic Label Integrated With 3D Printing for Wide‑Range Temperature Monitoring in Food Logistics.

Temperature abuse during logistics is a major cause of quality deterioration in food, pharmaceuticals, and biological products. Therefore, the development of low-cost, irreversible, and tamper‑proof temperature indicators is of great practical significance. Based on the acid-catalyzed irreversible ring-opening coloration of crystal violet lactone (CVL) under acidic conditions, a bilayer temperature monitoring label was prepared in this study, and the label structure was further optimized by introducing three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. Upon temperature excursions, the acidic componen

Bumblebees use and repair artificial honeypots.

Insects have long been known to show flexibility when building structures, including the ability to modify and repair them, and incorporate novel materials1. Even honeybee (Apis mellifera) nest cells, known for their highly stereotyped hexagonal geometry, can diverge from this shape2 and be altered by workers3. Compared to those of honeybees, bumblebee (Bombus spp.) nests have been described as "seemingly haphazard"1; found in a variety of cavity types1, they show variation in the size and location of honeypots and other objects built to rear brood of various sizes (Figure 1A). This natural va

Medium-throughput Column DNA Extraction Using 24-well Racks.

Silica-membrane spin column extraction is the standard for high-quality DNA purification but is labor-intensive and difficult to scale manually beyond small batches. Existing automated liquid handling robots are often still too expensive for small and medium-sized laboratories. This paper presents a streamlined, semi-automated approach using custom-designed, 3D-printed racks that fit standard centrifugation plate rotors. The suggested system allows the parallel processing of up to 116 standard commercial spin columns. The rack design accommodates a "nested" configuration, enabling simultaneous
