Tissue characterization using the continuous wavelet transform. Part II: Application on breast RF data.

In the first part of this work [16], a wavelet-based decomposition algorithm of the RF echo into its coherent and diffuse components was introduced. In this paper, the proposed algorithm is used to estimate structural parameters of the breast tissue such as the number and energy of coherent scatterers, the energy of the diffuse scatterers, and the correlation between them. Based on these individual parameters, breast tissue characterization is performed. The database used consists of 155 breast scans from 42 patients. The results are presented in terms of empirical receiver operating character

Enhanced gastrointestinal diagnosis: light-scattering spectroscopy and optical coherence tomography.

Detection of microscopic and biochemical changes within the mucosa and submucosa are beyond the realm of routine endoscopy. Distinguishing hyperplastic from neoplastic polyps, differentiating malignant from benign ulcers, and detecting mucosal dysplasia in patients with ulcerative colitis or Barrett's esophagus remain within the purview of the gastrointestinal pathologist. Recent developments in tissue spectroscopy and endoscopic optical coherence tomography have the potential to expand significantly our ability to diagnose gastrointestinal disease beyond the capabilities of visible light endo

Computerized evaluation of mammographic image quality using phantom images.

A simple, quick and computerized method for quantitatively evaluating the image quality of mammography phantom images has been developed. Images of the American College of Radiology (ACR) mammographic accreditation phantoms were acquired under different X-ray techniques, scored and ranked subjectively by five expert readers, and digitized for quantitative analysis. The contrast and signal-to-noise (contrast-to-noise) ratios of the main nodule and microcalcification group were obtained accurately and reproducibly using an image processing protocol. The contrast values were successful at discrim

[Effects of compton scatter in quantitative brain SPECT].

Effects of Compton scatter has been investigated for quantitative single-photon emission computed tomography. Using a technique proposed by Ichihara and Ogawa (triple-energy window method) as a gold standard, effects of correcting the scatter has been evaluated for 5 different phantom configurations, as well as a clinical cerebral blood flow study with use of 123I-IMP. Without the scatter correction but with a correction for attenuation, a conventional reconstruction provided a non-uniform distribution for uniform phantom configurations, and the quantitative pixel counts being highly dependent

Visual function before and after photorefractive keratectomy for myopia.

BACKGROUND: To date, Snellen visual acuity and postoperative refraction have been used to evaluate the results of photorefractive keratectomy. However, other parameters, such as contrast sensitivity function and glare, may be affected by refractive surgery and lead to unsatisfactory visual performance. This prospective study is aimed at evaluating the effect of photorefractive keratectomy on contrast sensitivity function and glare. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Static contrast sensitivity function, dynamic contrast sensitivity function, and glare sensitivity were evaluated in 22 myopic eyes before as

Measurement of small-angle photon scattering for some breast tissues and tissue substitute materials.

For photon energies encountered in diagnostic radiology the shape of the scattering distributions for low-atomic-number media exhibits peaks in intensity close to the forward direction that are not predicted by conventional theoretical models. The positions and shapes of the peaks depend upon the interatomic and intermolecular configurations of the scatterers. The phenomenon is of particular interest because of its relevance to the understanding and modelling of x-ray imaging processes and the possibility that the peaking may be characteristic of tissue type. In the present study, peaks in the

Light-scattering investigation of the dissociation behavior of Lunatia heros and Littorina littorea hemocyanins.

The subunit structure and dissociation of the hemocyanins of two marine snails, Lunatia heros and Littorina littorea, were investigated by light-scattering molecular weight methods. The hemocyanins of both species of snails are readily dissociated to fragments of one-tenth and one-twentieth of the parent proteins of close to 9 X 10(6) daltons by either increasing the pH or using dissociating reagents of the hydrophobic urea series or some of the Hofmeister salts. The lower members of the latter group of reagents, NaCl, and to some extent also NaBr were found to have only marginal effects on th

Fusion of phospholipid vesicles induced by muscle glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase in the absence of calcium.

Ca2+-induced fusion of phospholipid vesicles (phosphatidylcholine/phosphatidic acid, 9:1 mol/mol) prepared by ethanolic injection was followed by five different procedures: resonance energy transfer, light scattering, electron microscopy, intermixing of aqueous content, and gel filtration through Sepharose 4-B. The five methods gave concordant results, showing that vesicles containing only 10% phosphatidic acid can be induced to fuse by millimolar concentrations of Ca2+. When the fusing capability of several soluble proteins was assayed, it was found that concanavalin A, bovine serum albumin,

A light scattering investigation of the propylurea dissociation of human hemoglobin A.

The subunit dissociation of human hemoglobin A by propylurea in several liganded and chemically modified states was investigated by light scattering molecular weight methods. The dissociation data were analyzed by means of the equation developed in our earlier studies: deltaF degrees D EQUALS TO DELTAF degrees D, W - 2N'RTKB[D], where deltaF degrees D and deltaf degreees D,W represent the free energy of dissociation of hemoglobin tetramers into half-molecules consisting of alpha beta dimers in the presence and in the absence of propylurea, KB is the binding constant of the urea to the average

Simultaneous optimization of sequential IMRT plans.

Radiotherapy often comprises two phases, in which irradiation of a volume at risk for microscopic disease is followed by a sequential dose escalation to a smaller volume either at a higher risk for microscopic disease or containing only gross disease. This technique is difficult to implement with intensity modulated radiotherapy, as the tolerance doses of critical structures must be respected over the sum of the two plans. Techniques that include an integrated boost have been proposed to address this problem. However, clinical experience with such techniques is limited, and many clinicians are

COVERING THE PATIENT'S ARM SUPPORT IN LEAD REDUCED THE RADIATION DOSE RATE TO THE CARDIOLOGISTS DURING PERCUTANEOUS CORONARY INTERVENTIONS: A PHANTOM STUDY.

The aim of the study was to estimate organ dose rate reduction to a female anthropomorphic phantom, which simulated the cardiologist, during percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) when the patient's arm support was covered with 0.4-mm lead foil. Organ dose rates were determined using five radiation detectors inserted into the left eye, left thyroid, left breast, left liver lobe and uterus of the phantom. A male anthropomorphic phantom was placed on the examination table of an angiography system. Heart images of the patient phantom were acquired under 10 gantry angulations typical for PCI. T

Application of a low-cost Geiger-Müller monitoring system for clinical radiation environments.

BACKGROUND: Low-cost Geiger-Müller detectors may support clinical radiation monitoring, but their response varies with radiation type and measurement conditions. PURPOSE: To evaluate an Arduino-based Geiger-Müller monitoring system in representative clinical radiation environments and determine whether condition-specific calibration reduces disagreement with a reference survey meter. METHODS: The system was compared with a reference energy-compensated Geiger-Müller survey meter (Ludlum Model 3005) under computed tomography scatter, Ir-192 brachytherapy, and 6 MV linear accelerator maze condi

[Compression of the median nerve by chondrosarcoma of the hand].

The authors report a case of median nerve compression due to a chondrosarcoma of the wrist. A 30 year-old right handed man complained of typical symptoms of median nerve compression. X-ray examination showed normal findings. During operation a more proximal lumbrical origin was the only abnormal finding. After nerve decompression pain relief was prompt. Six months later the patient again complained of symptoms of median nerve compression. Now X-ray examination showed scattered punctuate calcific densities of dystrophic calcification. The tumor was histologically shown to be a chondrosarcoma. I

Dosimetric studies in the radiological examination of the hips in young infants with a special fenestration method of gonad protection.

A special lead shield of 1,5 mm Pb, with a fenestration was used for gonad protection during X-Ray of the hips for detection of dysplasia. The window allows the delineation of all parts of the skeleton required to make a correct diagnosis and check the standardized position of the pelvis, while all other parts, especially the gonads are safely shielded. The scattered radiation for the testes was further reduced by a trough-shaped lead shield behind the scrotum. The effectiveness of this gonad protection was measured by direct dosimetric studies on the infant with LiF and CaF2: Dy dosimeters at

Nanoscale poly(acrylic acid)-based hydrogels prepared via a green single-step approach for application as low-viscosity biomimetic fluid tears.

The present work reports a nanotechnology strategy to prepare a low-viscosity poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc)-based tear substitute with enhanced efficacy and compliance. Specifically, nanogels composed of PAAc and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were prepared by adapting an ionizing radiation method. For this purpose, different aqueous systems: PVP/PAAc nanoparticulate complexes, PVP/acrylic acid (AAc), N-vinylpyrrolidone (N-VP)/PAAc, and N-VP/AAc were exposed to gamma rays. The dynamic light scattering technique showed that stable nanogels are only produced in a relatively high yield from the PVP/AAc s

High-dose radiation and the emergence of thyroid nodular disease.

High-dose radiation (in excess of 2500 rads or centiGray) to the head and neck area is reputedly infrequently associated with the emergence of thyroid nodular disease. Thirty-three patients who underwent high-dose radiation and who developed thyroid nodular disease have been described. Radiation was originally administered for hyperthyroidism in 11 patients, postmastectomy in five, oral cancer in three, Hodgkin's disease in three, facial hirsutism in three, hemangioma in three, cancer of the larynx in one, skin cancer in one, desmoid tumor of the neck in one, Ewing's tumor in one, and pituitar

A Method for Calculating Small Sizes of Volumes in Postsurgical Thyroid SPECT/CT Imaging.

Differentiated thyroid cancer treatment typically involves the surgical removal of the whole or largest part of the thyroid gland. Diagnostic procedures are useful both before and after treatment to determine the need for radioiodine ablation, re-stage the disease, monitor disease progression, or evaluate treatment efficacy. SPECT/CT imaging can be utilized to identify small, distant iodine-avid metastatic lesions and assess their uptake and volume for the above purposes as well as for performing lesion-based dosimetry when indicated. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a m

Acoustofluidic separation of oblate spheroids from spheres using acoustic radiation torque and force.

Cells, bacteria, and other bioparticles exist in diverse shapes, and their morphology plays a pivotal role in biological functions and clinical significance. Various microfluidic approaches have been developed for shape-based separation of bioparticles with the same or similar volume; however, most of them were limited to separation of prolate spheroids from spheres or required a priori labeling and consequent detection. Here, we propose a vertical-type acoustofluidic method for the first separation of oblate spheroids from spheres in a label-free manner. The acoustic radiation torque suppress
