Monkey bites in travelers: should we think of herpes B virus?

Monkey bites are frequently reported among children traveling to tropical countries and can be associated with the transmission of zoonoses. Potentially fatal transmission of herpes B virus from macaque bites is rare but well documented in biomedical research facilities. The risk in travelers remains unknown. We report a case of a 7-year-old girl bitten by a macaque on her forehead and discuss her postexposure management.

Reconstruction of midface bone defects with vitallium micromesh.

Complex midface defects following trauma and tumor resection present a challenging problem for maxillofacial surgeons. Regardless of the cause of these defects, restoration of accurate contour is essential to achieve both proper function and cosmetically acceptable appearance. Traditionally, bone grafts have been the preferred method of reconstruction. We present the first report of the use of Vitallium micromesh in reconstruction of midface bone and cartilaginous defects in 3 patients. In 1 patient, bone loss resulted from trauma; in the other 2, loss was due to tumor resection. In all 3 pati

HCN2 channels: a potential therapeutic target for orofacial neuropathic pain after trigeminal nerve injury.

Hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels have recently emerged as promising targets for the treatment of neuropathic pain. This study investigated the potential involvement of HCN2 channels in the development of trigeminal neuropathic pain following peripheral nerve injury. Infraorbital nerve chronic constriction injury (ION-CCI) model was adopted to rats, and head withdrawal thresholds (HWT) to mechanical stimulation were assessed pre- and postoperatively, as well as after pharmacological intervention. In the trigeminal ganglion (TG), intracellular cyclic adenosine m

National Epidemiology of Go-Kart-Related Craniofacial Injuries in the United States, 2015-2024: An Analysis of the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System.

Go-karts are popular recreational vehicles capable of high speeds yet operate with minimal safety regulations, posing a significant risk for craniofacial injury. This study quantifies the national epidemiology of craniofacial trauma related to go-kart accidents. A retrospective cross-sectional analysis was conducted using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System from 2015 to 2024. Emergency department visits were identified using the go-kart product code and body-region codes for craniofacial injuries. Weighted data provided national estimates of injury patterns by age, sex, body reg…

Numb chin syndrome in sickle cell disease: a case series of Jamaican patients.

Numb chin syndrome is an uncommon presentation that has been reported as secondary to metastatic disease, trauma, and infections of the maxilla, mandible, or oral cavity. The hypoesthesia, paraesthesia, or pain are a result of injury to the inferior alveolar nerve, which is particularly vulnerable as it exits the mandible through the mandibular foramen as the mental nerve. In persons with sickle cell disease, it has been reported as a manifestation of mandibular vaso-occlusive crisis. This case series presents 13 patients with sickle cell disease who presented with numb chin syndrome, the larg

Large-scale brain organization during facial emotion processing as a function of early life trauma among adolescent girls.

BACKGROUND: A wealth of research has investigated the impact of early life trauma exposure on functional brain activation during facial emotion processing and has often demonstrated amygdala hyperactivity and weakened connectivity between amygdala and medial PFC (mPFC). There have been notably limited investigations linking these previous node-specific findings into larger-scale network models of brain organization. METHOD: To address these gaps, we applied graph theoretical analyses to fMRI data collected during a facial emotion processing task among 88 adolescent girls (n = 59 exposed to di

Ocular Complications Following Autologous Fat Injections into Facial Area: Case Report of a Recovery from Visual Loss After Ophthalmic Artery Occlusion and a Review of the Literature.

With the increase in popularity of the use of cosmetic fillers in plastic and esthetic surgery, the possibility of severe ocular complications should not be neglected. Of the fillers used, autologous fat is the most common to cause permanent visual deterioration, one of the most severe complications associated with the use of cosmetic fillers. Here we present the first report of a complete recovery of visual acuity from an instance of visual loss with no light perception caused by ophthalmic artery occlusion of the right eye following autologous fat injection in the facial area. Effect of polycaprolactone/collagen/hUCS microfiber nerve conduit on facial nerve regeneration.

Nerve conduits have been used to bridge nerve gaps without the donor site morbidity associated with nerve grafting. To fabricate artificial nerve conduits, various biological, synthetic, and natural materials have been applied. In this study, we suggest a new fibrous nerve conduit consisting of PCL microfibers supplemented with collagen and human umbilical cord serum (hUCS). The proposed PCL-based nerve conduit exhibited significantly higher bioactivities in vitro and in vivo, compared to pure PCL and PCL/collagen fibrous conduits. Based on these results, we believe that the PCL/collagen/hUCS

Orofacial infections in Iraq.

In Iraq, oral and maxillofacial (OMF) infections are common; these infections may be of odontogenic or nonodontogenic origin. The former, the commoner, gains importance from the catastrophic consequences that may take place in neglected or mismanaged patients and, as a paradox, from a fact that most of these infections are avoidable and preventable if a timely and accurate management took place for the primary dental problem. Nonodontogenic infections are not uncommon and are of life-threatening potential. Most of these infections are associated with an underlying medical condition that, whene

Immunohistochemical analysis of the purinoceptor P2X7 in human lingual nerve neuromas.

AIMS: Recent evidence suggests that the purinoceptor P2X7 may be involved in the development of dysesthesia following nerve injury, therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether a correlation exists between the level of P2X7 receptor expression in damaged human lingual nerves and the severity of the patients' symptoms. METHODS: Neuroma-in-continuity specimens were obtained from patients undergoing surgical repair of the damaged lingual nerve. Specimens were categorized preoperatively according to the presence or absence of dysesthesia, and visual analog scales scores were
