Effect of Phase Clustering Bias on Phase-Amplitude Coupling for Emotional EEG.

BACKGROUND: Emotions are thought to be related to distinct patterns of neural oscillations, but the interactions among multi-frequency neural oscillations during different emotional states lack full exploration. Phase-amplitude coupling is a promising tool for understanding the complexity of the neurophysiological system, thereby playing a crucial role in revealing the physiological mechanisms underlying emotional electroencephalogram (EEG). However, the non-sinusoidal characteristics of EEG lead to the non-uniform distribution of phase angles, which could potentially affect the analysis of ph

Traditional Methods Hold Their Ground Against Machine Learning in Predicting Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults.

OBJECTIVES: Machine learning methods have gained much attention in health sciences for predicting various health outcomes but are scarcely used in pharmacoepidemiology. The ability to identify predictors of suboptimal medication use is essential for conducting interventions aimed at improving medication outcomes. It remains uncertain whether machine learning methods could enhance the identification of potentially inappropriate medication use among older adults compared with traditional methods. This study aimed to (1) to compare the performances of machine learning models in predicting use of

An investigation into the abnormal dynamic connection mechanism of generalized anxiety disorders based on non-homogeneous Markov models.

BACKGROUND: The dynamic and hierarchical nature of the functional brain network. The neural dynamical systems tend to converge to multiple attractors (stable fixed points or dynamical states) in long run. Little is known about how the changes in this brain dynamic "long-term" behavior of the connectivity flow of brain network in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). METHODS: This study recruited 92 patients with GAD and 77 healthy controls (HC). We applied a reachable probability approach combining a Non-homogeneous Markov model with transition probability to quantify all possible connectivity

The Conundrum of Mechanics Versus Genetics in Congenital Hydrocephalus and Its Implications for Fetal Therapy Approaches: A Scoping Review.

Recent advances in gene therapy, particularly for single-gene disorders (SGDs), have led to significant progress in developing innovative precision medicine approaches that hold promise for treating conditions such as primary hydrocephalus (CH), which is characterized by increased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volumes and cerebral ventricular dilation as a result of impaired brain development, often due to genetic causes. CH is a significant contributor to childhood morbidity and mortality and a driver of healthcare costs. In many cases, prenatal ultrasound can readily identify ventriculomegaly as

Ankle Torque Estimation With Motor Unit Discharges in Residual Muscles Following Lower-Limb Amputation.

There has been increased interest in using residual muscle activity for neural control of powered lower-limb prostheses. However, only surface electromyography (EMG)-based decoders have been investigated. This study aims to investigate the potential of using motor unit (MU)-based decoding methods as an alternative to EMG-based intent recognition for ankle torque estimation. Eight people without amputation (NON) and seven people with amputation (AMP) participated in the experiments. Subjects conducted isometric dorsi- and plantarflexion with their intact limb by tracing desired muscle activity

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence for the use of acceptance-commitment therapy (ACT) for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, few fully implemented ACT have been conducted on the neural mechanisms underlying its effect on OCD. Thus, this study aimed to elucidate the neural correlates of ACT in patients with OCD using task-based and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: Patients with OCD were randomly assigned to the ACT (n = 21) or the wait-list control group (n = 21). An 8-week group-format ACT program was provided to the ACT group

Personalized Functional Connectivity Based Spatio-Temporal Aggregated Attention Network for MCI Identification.

Functional connectivity (FC) networks deri- ved from resting-state magnetic resonance image (rs-fMRI) are effective biomarkers for identifying mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients. However, most FC identification methods simply extract features from group-averaged brain templates, and neglect inter-subject functional variations. Furthermore, the existing methods generally concentrate on spatial correlation among brain regions, resulting in the inefficient capture of the fMRI temporal features. To address these limitations, we propose a novel personalized functional connectivity based dual-

Lumbar spinal ganglion cyst: A systematic review with case illustration.

PURPOSE: Ganglion cysts are benign soft tissue lesions found in joints, most commonly wrists. The incidence for juxtafacet cysts, the condition under which spinal ganglion cysts are categorized, is between 0.06% and 5.8%. Spinal ganglion cysts often arise in the most mobile segment of the lumbar spine, L4-L5. Patients commonly present with pain, radiculopathy, and weakness. Conservative management is used, but surgical resection is the most common treatment modality. We aim to review the literature and present a rare case of an L2-L3 situated spinal ganglion cyst, treated with maximal safe res

Diabetes Mellitus and Tinnitus: an Epidemiology Study.

Objectives: Tinnitus is the perception of sound that does not arise from an external source. It is a chronic sensation that virtually all would prefer not to experience, but for most people it is not disabling and treatments for disturbing tinnitus are limited. Diabetes causes several side effects, among which its impact on the neural system is one of the most important ones. Considering that the hearing system is part of the neural system, this paper investigates the likelihood of tinnitus occurrence and its potential role of risk factor in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
