Split hand-split foot-ectodermal dysplasia and amelogenesis imperfecta with a TP63 mutation.

We report on a mother and son who were affected with split hand-split foot (formerly described as ectrodactyly), ectodermal dysplasia, hyperpigmentation of skin, and dystrophic nails. Their hair was wiry, brownish, and slow-growing. Scanning electron micrography of their scalp hair showed hypoplastic hair bulbs, partial loss of hair cuticles, and frayed hair shafts. The son was affected with amelogenesis Imperfecta (hypocalcification, hypoplasia, and hypomaturation types), in the primary and permanent dentition. An unerupted supernumerary maxillary second premolar and fusion of mandibular inci

Rothmund-Thomson syndrome: a case report.

Rothmund-Thomson syndrome (RTS) is an extremely rare genetic disorder characterized by poikilodermatous skin changes, photosensitivity, and an increased risk of developing skin and bone malignancies. In this case report, the dental and periodontal features of RTS in a 16-year-old female patient are presented. The transmission electron microscopy performed on a gingival biopsy specimen showed structural defects of connective tissue. If the unusual ultrastructural findings of this case are confirmed as being consistent with other RTS patients, it is our opinion that this syndrome can be consider

Conservative approach to posttraumatic treatment of maxillary anterior teeth: a clinical report.

This clinical report emphasizes that comprehensive treatment planning, whether simple or complex, requires interdisciplinary knowledge. Conservative treatment was implemented for this patient, a 29-year-old woman with a posttraumatic anterior open occlusal relationship, crowding, and a shifted midline. The treatment plan involved selective occlusal grinding, adjunctive orthodontics, periodontal surgery, and cosmetic dentistry and proved to be highly successful.

Clinical diagnosis of trauma from occlusion and its relation with severity of periodontitis.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the reliability of several selected signs of trauma from occlusion and their relations with severity of periodontitis. 32 moderate to advanced chronic periodontitis patients participated in the study. All teeth present were evaluated for various abnormal occlusal contacts, signs of trauma from occlusion, and the severity of periodontitis. Standardized periapical radiographs were also taken for each tooth. The results demonstrated that: (1) no significant difference occurred in probing pocket depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (AL), or percent

Distinct Pathogenic Mechanisms of Two Novel NHS Mutations Identified in Chinese Han Families With Nance-Horan Syndrome.

Nance-Horan syndrome (NHS) is a rare X-linked genetic disorder characterized by congenital cataracts, dental anomalies, and neurodevelopmental impairments, caused by mutations in the NHS gene. In this study, two novel NHS mutations, c.3847C>T and c.2519_2520del, were identified in two unrelated Chinese Han families, and their pathogenic molecular mechanisms were elucidated. Functional analyses revealed that the c.3847C>T mutation exerts a dual pathogenic effect: It disrupts extracellular matrix homeostasis by downregulating COL4A1 and upregulating MMP9, and it triggers oxidative stress, eviden

[The oral cavity: A mirror of diabetes].

Diabetes and the oral cavity are closely associated as diabetes physiopathology affects the mouth and the oral manifestations are numerous and varied. These need to be searched systematically at every clinical examination as they are not only comorbidity factors but also have a two-way relationship with diabetes control. Periodontal diseases are the most frequent pathologies and the relationship with glycemic control has clearly been established: their frequency increases in case of uncontrolled glycemia, which makes them a good marker of glycated hemoglobin. Thorough oral health follow-up of

Oral manifestations of gastrointestinal diseases in children. Part 3: Ulcerative colitis and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

Alterations of the oral cavity are common in children: 22% of children aged less than 4 years and 44% of those aged more than 12 develop dental erosion, 9-95% of children in Europe and in North America develop gingivitis, with adolescents showing a prevalence of more than 60% [Italian Ministry of Health, Guidelines 2013]. Alterations within the oral cavity can be the first sign of systemic diseases and may thus allow for an early diagnosis and treatment. In particular, being the oral cavity a part of the gastrointestinal system, oral alterations can be an expression of a gastrointestinal disea

Utilizing dental hygienists to undertake dental examination and referral in residential aged care facilities.

OBJECTIVE: The Australian population is ageing, and a growing proportion of elderly Australians are now living in residential aged care facilities (RACFs). These residents are commonly dependent on others for their daily oral hygiene care and often display high levels of plaque and calculus. With declining edentulism rates, periodontal disease is becoming more prevalent in this population. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of a dental hygienist to undertake a dental examination for residents of aged care facilities, devise a periodontal and preventive treatment plan and refe

Mixed periapical lesion: differential diagnosis of a case.

A radicular cyst associated with carious teeth is a very common odontogenic lesion in the oral cavity, but calcifications in residual radicular cysts are quite rare. We report one such case where a routine pre-implant radiographic assessment revealed a mixed periapical radiopaque radiolucent lesion in the right maxillary central incisor region. Histological and radiographic studies show that there is a slow increase in the mineralized deposits within the cyst lumen with time. This becomes prominent histochemically in cysts more than 8 years old and radiographically 6 years later, as seen in ou

Severe gingival recession and early loss of teeth in a child with chronic graft versus host disease: a case report.

Graft versus host disease (GVHD) occurs after a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) when the donor's immune system rejects the recipient's body, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Increased numbers of chronic GVHD (c-GVHD) patients are likely to be seen by dental professionals because of the advances made in transplantation. The oral cavity may be the primary or the only site of c-GVHD and may have persistent lesions after resolution has occurred in other areas. Approximately 80% of patients with extensive c-GVHD present some type of oral involvement, including xerostom

Lingual mucosal ulceration with mandibular sequestration.

UNLABELLED: Lingual mucosal ulceration with mandibular sequestration is a condition that presents most commonly in the lower molar region and may be influenced by a variety of local and systemic factors. Three such cases are reported, two involving a history of recent dental extraction and one of seemingly spontaneous onset with the possibility of an underlying association with bisphosphonate therapy. An overview of the surgical and non-surgical management strategies for such cases is described. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This condition presents most commonly following extraction of mandibular molar

Periodontitis as manifestation of Crohn's disease in primary dentition: a case report.

The purpose of this case report is to detail an initial periodontal manifestation of Crohn's disease in a 6-year-old boy. The first clinical diagnosis, localized aggressive periodontitis, was based on the microbiological isolation of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans from subgingival sites. On examination, gingival lesions, together with bleeding on probing, edema, and erythema, were observed. Although an increased probing depth was detected, no radiographically visible alveolar bone loss was observed. According to these findings, periodontitis as a manifestation of a systemic disease was a
