Effect of Membrane Perforations With and Without Collagen Membrane Coverage in Vertical Ridge Augmentation: An Experimental Pilot In Vivo Study.

OBJECTIVES: Given the proposed bioactive role of collagen membranes, we aimed to evaluate whether the perforation size of titanium-reinforced dPTFE membranes, with or without an additional collagen membrane, influences outcomes of vertical alveolar ridge augmentation (VARA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 12 beagle dogs (24 sites), standardized bilateral chronic mandibular ridge defects (8 × 30 mm) were created and healed for 12 weeks. Sites were randomized (1:1:1) to VARA using porcine xenograft covered with either: (i) non-perforated titanium-reinforced dPTFE (NON-PERF), (ii) perforated titanium…

The Anterior Mandibular Alveolar Bone Augmentation With Sticky Bone in Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics.

OBJECTIVE: Sticky bone, a composite of porcine-derived xenograft bone material and serum components obtained from autologous blood centrifugation, was implanted into the anterior mandibular alveolar bone during periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) in a patient with skeletal Class III malocclusion. The augmentation and stability of the alveolar bone in the grafted area were evaluated over a 1-year follow-up period. METHODS: A patient with skeletal Class III malocclusion underwent PAOO surgery as part of presurgical orthodontic treatment. During the procedure, sticky bone wa

Custom fabricated three-dimensional printed surgical guide for trephine bur in autogenous bone graft: A technique report.

This technique presents a workflow that designs the custom surgical guide to cover a trephine bur using simple slicer software and three-dimensional (3D) printing to perform the semilunar technique. This method in autogenous bone grafting surgery harvests a thin layer of cortical bone in the donor site with a trephine bur. Its biologically favorable, round shape can be used as a shell to reconstruct the ridge with a 3D contour acceptable for future implant placement. A 78-year-old female patient required vertical and horizontal bone grafting for future implant placement due to the infection ca

U-shaped Splitting Technique vs Conventional Bone Grafting in Maxillary Facial Undercut for Dental Implants Placement: A Preliminary Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

AIM: This prospective randomized clinical trial was designed to compare the apical U-shape splitting technique (AUST) combined with guided bone regeneration (GBR) vs GBR alone for horizontal bone augmentation in maxillary labial undercut areas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included twelve patients with labial undercuts that made their alveolar ridges not able to compass dental implants. They received a total of 14 dental implants in the anterior maxilla where 7 (group I) were placed after AUST with GBR and the other 7 (group II) after the conventional GBR. The clinical and radiographic ev

Evaluation of wound dehiscence after vertical bone graft by using quantitative light-induced fluorescence.

Wound dehiscence is a common complication following vertical bone augmentation of implant dentistry. If the implanted titanium mesh becomes exposed, the exposed titanium mesh should be removed with the contaminated grafts before a clinical graft infection develops. However, no generally accepted evaluation methods have been suggested to determine the removal timing or the extent of contaminated bone grafts to be removed. Quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) technology has been used for various oral bacterial condition such as dental caries, plaque, peri-implantitis, and osteomyelitis.

One-year implant survival following lateral window sinus augmentation using plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF): a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Population-based cohort studies show an association between systemic sclerosis (SSc) and lung cancer; however, a Mendelian randomisation analysis refutes causality. Herein, lung cancer risk is analysed in an academic inception SSc cohort, complemented by a meta-analysis of published data. METHODS: Patients evaluated within 12 months of SSc onset, between January 1995 and December 2020, with regular follow-up until December 2024, were included. Clinical manifestations, laboratory parameters, treatments and comorbidities were prospectively recorded. Age-standardised incidence ratio

Impairment of an atrophic mandible by preparation of the implant cavity: a biomechanical study.

An important complication during insertion of implants in atrophic mandibles is the fracture that can be induced by preparation of the cavity. We designed this study to identify which configuration of cavities in the interforaminal region was the least likely to fracture. An electromechanical testing machine was used to measure breaking loads of specifically-designed synthetic models of atrophic mandibles. The implant cavities correlated with the common clinical patterns. Intact atrophied synthetic mandibles broke at a mean (SD) load of 729.48 (59.94) N (control group). Models with four differ

Platelet-rich plasma in sinus augmentation procedures: a systematic literature review: Part II.

BACKGROUND: Although platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been extensively studied for over a decade, there are no definitive reports, which prove the benefit of using PRP in sinus augmentation procedures. In addition, no systematic literature review has been done to report the benefit of treatment outcome in patients who received PRP in conjunction with bone/bone substitutes in maxillary sinus augmentation procedures. Therefore, it can be rightly stated that evidence for an adjunctive benefit of using PRP with bone grafts in sinus augmentation procedures is equivocal and inconclusive. AIM: : The o

Nasal suction technique for maxillary sinus floor elevation: a report of 24 consecutive patients.

PURPOSE: Inadvertent perforation of the sinus membrane is a frequent complication encountered during sinus floor elevation (SFE). Different strategies have been described for the prevention or treatment of perforations, with varying results. This paper reports the findings of a preliminary study into the application of a novel nasal suction technique in which negative antral air pressure was used to facilitate the raising of the sinus lining and to reduce the risk of perforations occurring during SFE. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 24 consecutive patients, nasal suction was applied through the ips

ABC sinus augmentation classification.

Edentulism in the posterior maxilla can present with compounding variables that make it a difficult region to restore with implants. Pneumatization of the sinus floor is typically accounted for during surgical treatment planning, but other factors such as horizontal ridge deficiency and vertical defects may be overlooked. This report reviews the different classifications used to treat the posterior maxilla and introduces a new system that incorporates all factors critical for implant success. Class A represents abundant bone with > or = 10 mm bone height below the sinus floor and > or = 5 mm b

The application of CGF combined with GBR in alveolar bone increment for patients with anxiety disorder: A rare case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), one of the commonly used anti-anxiety drugs, may have impacts on bone metabolism and potentially lead to drug-induced osteoporosis. The traditional approach of oral implantation in individuals with both anxiety disorder and drug-induced osteoporosis poses a significant challenge. To address this issue, concentrated growth factor (CGF) has been utilized in patients undergoing concurrent alveolar ridge augmentation during oral implantation, resulting in favorable clinical outcomes. Consequently, combining CGF with guided bone regenerati…

Evaluation of symphysis donor site quantity by cone-beam computed tomography and its relation to anterior loop of mental foramen: an observational study.

OBJECTIVE: For severely atrophic alveolar ridges, block grafting procedures are usually decided to use for reliable results. Various intraoral donor sites for autogenous block graft are presented in the literature. However, vital anatomic structures can limit intraoral bone block graft surgeries, and they must be evaluated in detail. The aim of this study is to evaluate the dimensions and volume of the maximum potential symphysis block graft donor site and their relations to the anterior loop of mental foramen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: According to inclusion criteria, 408 cone beam computed tom

Dental Implant Restoration of a Mandibular Gunshot Injury: A Case Report.

Treatment of gunshot injuries to the maxillofacial region requires a multidisciplinary approach with specialist collaboration. The primary goals of treatment are to stabilize fractures, control bleeding, reconstruct the affected tissues, and restore function. This case report discusses a patient's treatment sequence resulting from a gunshot injury to the right posterior mandible. The initial stabilization and debridement, followed by mandibular augmentation, and finally prosthodontic restoration of lost teeth and the alveolar process are illustrated. Understanding the consequences of gunshot i

Automatic Segmentation of Bone Graft in Maxillary Sinus via Distance Constrained Network Guided by Prior Anatomical Knowledge.

Maxillary Sinus Lifting is a crucial surgical procedure for addressing insufficient alveolar bone mass andsevere resorption in dental implant therapy. To accurately analyze the geometry changesof the bone graft (BG) in the maxillary sinus (MS), it is essential to perform quantitative analysis. However, automated BG segmentation remains a major challenge due to the complex local appearance, including blurred boundaries, lesion interference, implant and artifact interference, and BG exceeding the MS. Currently, there are few tools available that can efficiently and accurately segment BG from con
