OBJECTIVES: Against common belief, mandibular condyle fractures are not that rare, with morbidity rates ranging from 19 to 52%, depending on actual literature sources. Practitioners try to improve the surgical techniques applied to obtain the most satisfactory anatomical and functional effect. The purpose of this study is to identify the relationships that affect bone loss around screws and plates in mandibular condylar process fractures treated surgically using the Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) technique.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our research covered 276 fractures of the base, lo

BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that volar locking pate fixation using a minimum number of screws-four in the distal row and two in the shaft of the plate-will provide sufficient stability for unstable extra-articular fractures of the distal radius. We aimed to compare the biomechanical properties of different numbers and locations of screws in volar locking plate fixation and describe the clinical and radiological outcome of plate fixation using a minimum number of screws for distal radius fractures.
METHODS: We divided 48 artificial radius fracture bones into four groups (group A-D) based on th

BACKGROUND: Modified Cortical Bone Trajectory (MCBT) technology offers advantages over Cortical Bone Trajectory (CBT) technology in anatomy, biomechanics, and therapeutic treatment. Currently, there is a lack of research that has comprehensively measured the MCBT screw trajectory parameter in the lower lumbar spine, which hinders its clinical use.
METHODS: There are 60 lumbar spine CT images chosen, with an even split of 30 males and 30 females. The study measures the MCBT screw trajectory parameters, including entry angle α, screw trajectory lengths and diameters, and lateral and cephalic an

BACKGROUND: To construct a fracture-specific reduction aid by means of virtual reduction technology and 3D printing to reduce malreduced, externally fixed, long bone fractures.
TECHNIQUE: Following application of an external fixator to a malreduced long bone fracture, we performed postoperative computed tomography to visualise the fragments and their position relative to Schanz screws. DICOM data were transferred to 3D planning software, and the fracture was then virtually reduced. Subsequently, a reduction aid was designed to cover the Schanz screws in such a way that it would maintain the p

The size and volume of plates and screws for fracture fixation of the hand (1.5-mm screws and titanium miniplates, 2.0-mm screws and stainless-steel AO miniplates, and 2.7-mm screws and stainless-steel AO miniplates) were compared against the phalanges and metacarpal bones and the surrounding soft tissue from male cadavers of Asian decent. In the cadaver study, it was first established that the difference between anatomic measurements and radiologic measurements for the interarticular bone length and midshaft width were not significant (p = .09). Second, the volume occupied by the bone showed

BACKGROUND: Femoral neck fractures are prevalent in orthopedic injuries, often leading to complications such as nonunion and osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). Studies indicate that after healing and removal of internal fixation devices, some patients develop ONFH, while others experience osteosclerosis around the screw holes due to prolonged fixation, increasing ONFH risk. Despite such observations, biomechanical studies on this phenomenon are limited. This study assesses the risk of femoral head collapse post-internal fixation device removal and investigates the biomechanical effects

BACKGROUND: Fixation of simple oblique fractures of short tubular bones with only inter-fragmentary screws is simple and clinically useful. This study compared the biomechanical properties of fixation using three 2.7-mm mini-screw and two conventional 3.5-mm lag screw constructs for simple oblique fractures of the distal fibula in human osteoporotic bone.
METHODS: Simple oblique fractures of the distal fibula at the level of the syndesmosis were simulated in 15 paired fresh frozen ankles, and the calcaneal bone mineral density was measured in each. Fixation with either three 2.7-mm mini-screw

INTRODUCTION: Spino-pelvic fixation has been widely accepted for surgical treatment of sacral tumor, scoliosis surgery and pelvic fractures. Cement augmentation of screws is an option to improve implant stability in osteoporotic bone quality. Aim of the present study is to compare iliac screw fixation without cement fixation and two cement application options in a biomechanical testing.
HYPOTHESIS: Cement augmentation of iliac screws leads to superior pull-out strength.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty female and osteoporotic human iliac bones were used. Three operation treatment groups were gen

IntroductionLateral mass screws are widely used in the sub-axial cervical spine but have poor pullout strength and result in a screw tulip that is medial, which limits both rod passage to nearby pedicle screws and the ability to centrally decompress the canal after screw placement. True pedicle screws have the highest pullout strength, but carry neurovascular risk. The cervical pedicle inlet (CPI) trajectory is a novel technique that involves a lateral starting point similar to a true pedicle screw, but the tip of the screw stops in the dense bone at the pedicle inlet, thus limiting neurovascu

PURPOSE: Current mandibular plating systems contain a wide range of plates and screws needed for the treatment of mandibular reconstruction and mandibular fractures. The authors' hypothesis was that a single diameter screw could be used in all applications in a plating system. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to test if the 2.0-mm locking screws could replace the 2.4-mm screws to stabilize a 2.5-mm-thick reconstruction plate in the treatment of mandibular discontinuity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six fresh human cadaveric mandibles were used: 18 were plated using 2.0-mm locking scr

The present study was performed to test the null hypothesis on no difference in stability of fixation after volar plating of intra-articular distal radius fractures (AO C2-C3) with either locking smooth pegs or locking screws in a clinical setting. A retrospective evaluation included adult patients with C2-C3 AO fractures treated with a volar plate with locking smooth pegs or locking screws. Radiographic assessment was performed to evaluate extra- and intra-articular parameters in the early postoperative period and after bone union. Twenty-seven consecutive patients were included. Thirteen cas

The sliding compression screw is widely regarded as the optimum treatment for intertrochanteric fractures of the femur, allowing bone fragments to impact until a bony support has been established across the fracture site. This study carried out biomechanical, cadaveric tests to establish the influence of direct static loading situations on the modes of failure of the Gamma Nail compared with the Dynamic Hip Screw (DHS). Clinical studies report DHS failures of lag screws cutting-out, bending of the lag screws and cortical screws pulling out causing plate loosening. Gamma Nail failures include l

Numerous interference screws of different compositions exist including titanium screws, bioabsorbable screws, and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) screws. PEEK-based implants are frequently used in orthopaedic surgery due to their biocompatibility, similar elastic modulus to cortical bone, and purported negligible risk of osteolysis compared with bioabsorbable screws. In this case report, we present the case of a 48-year-old healthy female who experienced a massive osteolytic reaction in the talus and fibula after 11 weeks following implantation of PEEK-based interference screws during lateral ankl

BACKGROUND: Conventional nails rely on interlocking screws for axial and rotational stability. Such screws have poor fixation in patients with poor bone quality (osteopenia). The Fixion nail does not depend on interlocking screws-axial and rotational stability is instead achieved by nail expansion. Therefore, this nail may be better suited for patients with poor bone quality who require humeral stabilization.
METHODS: The system was used to manage 25 unstable humerus shaft fractures in osteoporotic bone. An antegrade approach was used in 18 patients and a retrograde approach was used in 7 pat
