Domestic cats were experimentally infected with culture propagated Bartonella henselae by intradermal (i.d.) and intravenous (i.v.) routes. Cats were more efficiently infected by the i.d. (8/8 cats) than by the i.v. (2/16) route. Bacteremia was detected 1-3 weeks following inoculation and lasted for most cats for 1-8 months. However, one naturally infected cat was observed for 24 months and was found to be cyclically bacteremic, with bacterial levels varying one hundred fold or more from one period to another. The second experiment of protein crystallization was performed on domestic re-entry satellite FSW-2 in 1994-07. The results are superior to the ones of the first mission in 1992: 9 of 10 different proteins were crystallized in space, and 70% of the total 48 samples yielded single crystals. Few data exist regarding the relationship between the location of injuries and the presence of domestic violence. This study of 127 people at an inner-city hospital emergency department found that most patients had head, neck and facial injuries. Although only 23 percent of patients with such injuries were victims of domestic violence, 94.4 percent of victims of domestic violence had head, neck and facial injuries. The study results indicate that head, neck and facial injuries could be markers of domestic violence.

The high mortality in animals with diaphragmatic hernia has been related to profound cardiopulmonary dysfunction. Shock, liver disease and renal failure are among the most common causes of death. 18 cats with traumatic diaphragmatic hernia were anaesthetized. Duck viral enteritis (DVE) outbreaks occurred at two different locations in Pennsylvania in 1991 and 1992. Records of domestic animals brought to the Veterinary Entomology Laboratory for diagnosis of suspected lice and mite infestation over a 10 year period were analysed. From a total of 794 suspected cases, 137 (17.3%) and 247 (31.1%) were positive for lice and mange mites respectively. In the domestic cat the v. portae originates as a thick venous trunk below the liver through confluence of the v. gastrica sinistra, v. lienalis and v. mesenterica cranialis. It was formed in this way in 19 cases, i.e. in 63.3%. Among the aberrations found in the other cases, the most frequent was a common trunk for the v. gastrica sinistra and v. lienalis (6.7%). A total of 192 out of 300 serum samples from camel, cattle, sheep and goats tested for yellow fever virus antibody by the counterimmunoelectrophoresis were found positive. This test was confirmed by the single radial haemolysis and serum neutralization tests. Twenty-one and 36 sera were positive for specific yellow fever virus antibodies by the single radial haemolysis and serum neutralization tests respectively. The possible role of these animals in the epidemiology of yellow fever is discussed.

Three unrelated stocks of Trypanosoma (Trypanozoon) brucei were tested for their ability to infect domestic chickens. One of them, Lugala/55/EATRO/459, regularly produced a chronic infection.
